Subject: Configuring network/sound/supend mode on Thinkpad A20m (Mandrake 7.1)
Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2000 18:11:48 GMT

HI,

I just got a Thinkpad A20m and I'm trying to configure it correctly. I've got
a few things to fix and I'm hoping someone can help.

- How do I configure the network card? All the docs I've seen say to use the
eepro100 driver (or som similarly named driver) but when I try to load it,
it reports that it can't find any device of that type. Any ideas what should
be used instead? How do I ask the OS to tell me what it thinks it is? I can
make it work with a PCMCI card but I'd rather use the builtin card.

- My sound card isn't working. When it boots, it sometimes hangs trying to
load the sound driver (cs41?? something, I think -- I don't have the
computer in front of me right now). I see some posts that say to use the
ALSA stuff. I'll try them to see what happens but if there are some issues I
should know about, please let me know.

- I heard there's a linmodem module somewhere that could be used with the
(yucky) WindModem that comes with the system. Where can I find that?

- Suspend mode doesn't work. When I close the lid, the machine doesn't fall in
sleep mode. But if I try to shut down the machine, when it stops the amd
process, the machine falls into suspend mode. I have to Fn-F3 it to wakeit
up and complete the shutdown process. Anyone have an idea what the problem
  is?

All this is being done on a Mandrake 7.1 system, if that can help give better
pointers. FWIW, I had most of this working on a Dell Inspiron 3500, using
Mandrake 7.0. I don't remember doing anything special to get things working
correctly (suspend mode in particular).

Thanks,

L

Yes /etc/hosts and /etc/host.conf is setup correctly.
Iget the same result when I telnet with the IP address.
If I do need to rebuild, what should I rebuild?

Hi Folks,
I need a bit of intense help:
I can get my Linux to ping my Win98SE but
I cannot get Win98SE to ping my Linux by IP and by name in the Hosts file.

On each machine as a separate entity I can ping by 127.0.0.1 and by its name
in the local Hosts file.
When I have booted Linux I then Login as Root and config my eth0 card:

ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.4 netmask 255.255.255.0 up

I then try:

smbclient -L turnbui [turnbui is my windows machine]

and this works fine BUT it asks for a password? I just press enter, all is
OK
I get the following:
Sharename Type Comment
================        =======    =============
LINUX Disk
D Disk

=========        =========

BUT I just cannot ping from Win98SE to Linux. Naturally I also cannot find
Linux in my W98SE's Network Neibourhood. Please help.

I have a fresh installation of RH7. I got the named service configured the
way I had it before on RH62, but this version won't transfer zones to the
secondary dns' I have set up, nor will it refresh the external servers on
the net. The name server does answer all requests specifically referencing
it by IP.

Is there anything specific to RH7 I have to do to correct this? I don't
*think* I've forgotten anything. I need some help, please.

BTW. Linuxconf doesn't like the SOA setup on my copy of RH7. I upgraded to
It gives an error message

Interesting; I was not aware of that.

Is there a RFC2203/2623-compatible implementation of NFS available
for Linux yet, then? (Will there be part of one as of Linux 2.4? :-) )

.xinitrc is only used when you're using startx. If you're using a
display manager like gdm, you need to edit .xsession instead.

Hallo allemaal,

The 0C type is used for primary partitions only. Inside an extended
partition the type of the extended partitions defines whether extended
interrupt 13h should be used or not.

It will be possible to rewrite the partition tables in this case using
sfdisk. For details, read the sfdisk documentation. The partition
numbering of cause will change.

After this it may be needed to change the extended partition type back
to 0F. Leaving it as 05 will damage data.

The ungracefull way to exit from "X" is the <ctrl-alt-backspace>.
Anoter poster mentioned edit /etc/inittab and make the entry
  id:3:initdefault:
to start Linux in mode 3 instead of 4 or 5.

You might also check your startup scripts to make sure that
a display manager is not started (ie XDM, KDB, GNM, etc.)

Can smbclient find your own Linux box? If not, you have to fix that
before Win can find it. Browsing Linux samba does require a valid guest
account, but it does not need to have a password (note, the guest account
should NOT have a shell).

This only applies to RH distributions. This might be true
for other rpm based distributions but I have no way of
varifying that.

For RH, install the kernel-hearders rpm. In /usr/src/linux/configs
you will find various kernel config files. Copy the one that
closely matches your system to /path/to/<kernel source>/linux/.config
Then run make [menu|x]config on it. Save then:

make dep clean bzImage modules .......

Note how I string it all on one line. No need for seperate
lines ;-)

What are you setting for an smtp server. Try using the mail server at
your ISP. That should easily work for sending and receiving mail with
Netscape.

Pine should be able to send mail through your ISP and can do IMAP to
receive mail, but I don't think it does POP3. I typically use pine to
send mail, fetchmail to grab incoming, and then read or reply with pine.

Fetchmail requires a working sendmail (or similar local smtp) which was
easy for me with real internet hostname. 'qmail' is supposed to be easier
to configure than sendmail. And 'postfix' is supposed to be more secure,
but I have not figured out how to get it to do anything but stack all mail
in a deferred directory.

I have a home LAN running a few different workstation/server (for FUN). All
the workstation/server are connected to a 10/100 Ethernet switch. The RH
server had two interfaces one Internal (192.168.x.x) and one external
(y.y.y.y).

With the original configuration I had the cable modem directly connected to
the same switch as all the other workstation/server interfaces (including
both RH server interfaces). I know technically I have two Layer 2 domains
connected to one Layer 2 device but I didn't have an extra switch ;)

This worked fine until I added another system to the home LAN. I ran out of
ports and decided to connect the cable modem directly to the external
interface of the RH server.

I know this is a "more correct" way of connecting my little network and
probably more secure, but I have been having problems maintaining
connectivity to the Internet ever since.

**Problem**
It seems that (frequently) my cable modem looses connectivity to the
Internet but after running several tests it seems that the cable modem may
not be the actual problem.

When I noticed that no one on the LAN could get to the Internet I would
(from the workstation) ping the LAN side of the RH server (this was always
successful), then the external side of the RH server (this was always
successful), then the IP address of the actual cable modem (10.x.x.x) (this
always failed) , then the external network default gateway (this always
failed).

I then checked and re-seated all the cables (all OK but did not restore
service). I ran the same test from my RH server and got the same results as
above. I would stop/start the IPChains FW (still service was down). I
rebooted the RH server (still service was down). The only way to restore
services was to power off/on the Cable modem.

I had the cable company check all my coax cables (they fixed a few problems
and my signals to the modem are "crystal clear) and replace the cable modem
and am still having the same problem. Strange but true!!!!

I them removed some of my workstation from the LAN and connected the cable
modem and the internal and external interfaces of my RH server (running
IPChains) to the Ethernet switch and all worked!! I was able to download all
five RH 7.0 ISO files (over 2.5 GB) from the Internet without intervention.
Prior to this last change I would have to power off the cable modem every 15
or 20 minutes because I would loose connectivity to the Internet.

At this point I thought I had it licked...but no such luck.

I bought a 5 port 10MB Ethernet Hub and tried to connect the cable modem and
the external interface of the RH server to the hub while all the other
devices were connected to the 10/100 Ethernet switch. This setup also began
to fail!!! I tried a number of different configuration and better luck.

It seems that when I have the cable modem connected to the Ethernet switch
everything works fine, when I connect it to the HUB things fail.

I have no idea why, the only difference I can see is that the Hub will have
more Ethernet collisions than the switch, but that is normal everyday
Ethernet networking. If there are collisions then everyone pauses for a bit
then begins again.. IEEE 802.3 CSMA/CD.

I am almost embarrassed to say I am a SR Net ENG for a large International
organization. I have been working with Ethernet since 90'..in this case I
know what works I just don't understand why???

Hi,
I'm having problems with NMB FAILED and binding to the NIS domain failed?.
SMB was OK though.
The following was in the messages:

ypbind[267]: domainname not set - aborting
ypbind: ypbind startup failed

can anyone please enlighten me please.

Subject: RH Hangs on Sound -- HELP
Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2000 22:27:12 GMT

I am running Red Hat 6.2 and recently installed a Yamaha Sound card.
when I ran sndconfig, it said the card was an ESS-whatever and
proceded to play a couple of sounds. OK....fast forward....card has
been configured. Now it's a crapshoot whenever I play a file (either
from the console or from KDE). Sometimes it plays and sometimes it
locks the system up HARD!!!! Can't do anything except push the reset
button <cringe>. It even locks up my KVM. I have to recycle the
power to be able to move to a different machine. I can't even telnet
into the box when it's locked. NOTHING WORKS!!!

Any ideas on what is causing this. Maybe the wrong driver?? Maybe my
bad luck??

Thanks,

Dodd

i tried this and it worked OK. i removed the .xinitrc file in my home
directory, and things still worked as before using the .Xclients file.

yep, that's what my .Xclients file looks like and my .Xclients-default
file just has the one line for starting the desktop manager (plus the
comment of course).

after making the changes, yes. switchdesk does change the
.Xclients-default file from gnome to kde and vice-versa.

however, i'm still only able to startup in gnome without manually
changing the settings in /usr/X11/xinit/xinitrc

the original file here (which i backed up) started twm, xclock, and
three terminal windows. if i leave that file intact, that's what gets
loaded every single time i startx (unless of course i use a
/home/[user]/.xinitrc)

now, if changed the /usr/X11/xinitr/xintrc file to point to gnome, so
that's what i get no matter what.

still stymied...

thanks,

hagbard
