Hello!
I can't seem to find how to log Swat usage. I need
to know when people are using Swat, and who they are, but
nothing gets written to the smbd log file after a swat connection.
I've tried up to debug level 3 so far in smb.conf... Is a higher
debug level needed? Hopefully not, I don't need all the info that
generates, just the Swat connections.
Please email in addition to posting if you'd be so kind:

I suspect the RAM and my 'XF86Config'

That will only stop sendmail from loading when the system
enters runlevel 3 (full network no gui), by default it
is loaded in runlevels 2,3,4,5. Those links are in the
/etc/rc.d/rc2.d, rc3.d, rc4.d, and rc5.d To see which runlevels
will activate sendmail on your system use chkconfig:
[root@zephyr]# chkconfig --list sendmail
sendmail 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off
[root@zephyr]#
To deacivate:
[root@zephyr]# chkconfig --level 2345 sendmail off
[root@zephyr]# chkconfig --list sendmail
sendmail 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off

I am using RedHat 6.1 but updated the kernel to 2.2.17. I bought the same
ethernet card as you and it all worked fine - it automatically detected the card
(it should do this at startup). However, you will need to compile the kernel with
an ethernet card there. Even if it is the wrong on it will tell you this when you
reboot and will automatically ask you to install your new INtel Ethernet Pro
card.
Hope this helps,

I modified 'upsd' to work with the Belkin F5C520c UPS -- I don't know if
this is similar or not; the F5C520c looks like a fat power strip, and
is capable of notifying AC fail, low battery, and can be told to cut
power via an RS-232 line.
The new version of upsd is 2.4 I think, and is supposed to be available
on unc.sunsite.edu if I recall correctly; otherwise, get my version at

Reboot the machine. When you get to the LILO: prompt, type linux 2.
This forces it to boot to runlevel 2 which is text mode.
Then you can fix your XF86Config file.

Can't seem to find an answer to what must be a very simple problem.
I found one message that dealt with burning a Slackware CD from Windows that
contained a hint to the answer I need.
The message read, in part:
"Why don't you just use xcdroast off the Slackware 4.0 /contrib directory?
It preserves everything, with the correct permissions."
This is the problem I am having: burning some Windows .txt files onto a CD
from my Linux (RedHat 6.1 w/2.2.16 kernel) box.
I can't seem to keep xcdroast from changing the permissions to "READ ONLY"
for those few files. I tried setting the permissions by hand to root
owner/group and all read/write. Anyway, I am not a *NIX expert - but I have
been using Linux as my LAN backbone for about a year now and am comfortable
with Linux.
Joliet extensions; RockRidge extensions; ??? no combination seems to keep
the permissions as r/w for all such that Windows still sees them as
read/write.
I put the files to be burned into an ext2 directory on my Linux box, then
set permissions to r/w for all, and leave owner/group as root.
What is the magic combination? I have burned about half a dozen CDs and
can't afford any more of this kind of ad hoc stuff.

Help!!
Here's what happens now: identd is started in the rc.d scripts as a
standalone daemon (*5* instances thereof, actually!), per the recent
RedHat switch from inetd.
I WANT identd to be run from inetd, but when I tried, I was still left
with *5* instances of in.identd. The box rarely ever needs to serve
identd info, so I don't WANT 5 processes running all the time. That's
why I just want inetd to fire one up when it's needed, and then it should
die humbly.
I KNOW this is a common question, and I've been scouring the net for an
answer, but haven't found a good one yet!
Hope somebody out there can help!

Bill -
I had a bit of trouble setting up my home machine with an i810 chipset as well,
but found these two excellent links with info on how to work around it. The
important thing is you have to stop the install of RH 6.2 before configuring the
XFREE86, or it will bail out on you. Also, sound support is not provided in the
stock RH 6.2 dist, you must load the ALSA drivers to get this working.
Mine now works beautifully. This will be more fully supported in RH 7.0, but
I'm a bit reluctant to install it given the problems others have had.

I'm installing Linux on a system with an ABIT BE6-II mobo with a
Highpoint HPT370 non-raid ata-100 chipset on it. The chipset works
fine, I'm quite sure, since I've installed Win98 on the drive without
problems.
I had linux on a SCSI drive so I'm using that as my base for installing
over onto the HPT370-controlled disk. I updated my kernel to 2.2.16
and applied the patch from www.linux-ide.org. There was no option for
HPT370 so I chose the HPT366 option (which I have read in other posts
to be the right option).
During Linux boot with this new kernel, I do see a new "hde" which
correctly lists my new disk's manufacturer and model info. But when I
get down to the partition check part of booting, I get a long series of
error messages such as "lost interrupt" every few seconds as the kernel
unsuccessfully tries to read the new drive's partition table. Once,
after a few minutes of this trying, the kernel continued and finished
booting, though the new drive wasn't available. Other tries since
then, the kernel never quits trying to read the new drive's partition
tables and just keeps giving errors.
Can anyone give me guidance? Do I need to pass anything to the kernel
here?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Well, I have a Pavilion with the same setup. The sound
portion of that card has recently been supported by
4-Front's OSS drivers. I haven't tested it so I don't know
how well it works but 4-Front's pretty good so I'd think
they would release something halfway decent or not at all.
The drivers cost $20 US but they have a free look programme
so you can d/l and test to see if you like it. You can d/l
from 4-Front Technology's website.
The modem part is a software modem, as you correctly judged.
I'd recommend an external serial modem to replace it. You
can check out www.linmodems.org for info on supported
modems, if you like, but all external serial modems will
work fine with Linux.
If you want to replace the sound, I put an Ensoniq PCI 128
(ES1371 chipset -- $30 US) into my Pavilion and it works
great.
