I am using Slakware 2.3

I do get the error, ext2-fs warning: maximal count reached.

The documentation says:

This message is issued by the kernel when it mounts
a filesystem that's marked as clean, but whose
'number of mounts since check' counter has reached
the predefined value.

The solution is to get the latest version of the
ext2fs utilities (e2fsprogs-0.5b.tar.gz at the time of writing)
[around 1995 I think] from the usual sites.

I did try looking in ftp.funet.fi : /pub/linux but I
could not find it...not even in the indices I searched!

Can anyone out there find it for me?

Thanks in advance!

I does the some. Then I patched linux kernel and then you can compile
kernel using make dep, make clear and at the end make bzImage

Any question?

I can shutdown and halt my RedHat 7.0 properly. It stops at:
INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel
When I press CTRL ALT DEL it do
INIT: switching to runlevel: 6 and waiting for ever.
Thus it no unmount file system and than it takes a long time to start
again. Where the problem is. How to force it to shutdown properly

I was looking at log files ex. /var/log/messages but it seems everything
okay. Where should I look. How to solve this problem??

In lilo which resides in MBR add in its lilo.conf.

unsafe #meaning "Don't ask stupid questions just do

And rerun /sbin/lilo -C /etc/lilo.conf.

Now the MBR lilo wakes up and on prompt calls the other lilo which knows
everything about its install.

"man lilo.conf" helps.

Have fun.

make it simple, give us the html tags in which the images are included
in the html file. (The img tags)
and give us a directory listing of the directory where the pictures are
in, then we'll see.

If "matlab" is a libc5 program, then you need the libc5 versions of the X
libraries (libXt, libX11, etc.). On libc6-based systems (like RH 7), the
versions in /usr/X11R6/lib are the libc6 versions.

If it's installed, give the command:

chkconfig smb on

Then samba will be started on the next boot.

To start it immediately, execute

/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start

No you can have only one extended partition per HDD.

You can extend the extended partition even further with Partition Magic
(non free) and perhaps you can use GNU's parted (which is free) although
I'm not sure that can do this.

You can always at the lilo prompt give the runlevel to start in

so instead of just entering linux, you'd enter linux 5 to start in
runlevel 5
You can make this default by changing the entry in /etc/inittab
the runlevel 3 should be changed to runlevel 5

I too advise against this, since I think it's no problem to type startx
and it's definitely less trouble than rebooting whenever there's a
problem with you X setup. But it's obviously your choise, and if you
know your X-setup to be OK, and you're not likely to change it, there's
no real reason not to use runlevel 5 as default

Subject: RPM problem

Hi!

When I was installing a rpm (rmp -ivh package_name), I noticed message:
cannot get shared lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packeges
(I don't have this directory on my system)

cannot open Packeges index using db3 - operation not permitted (1)
-> The rpm database cannot be opened in db3 format. If you have upgraded the
rpm package you need to convert your database to db3 format running
"rpm --reduilddb" as root.

Afer this messages I saw progress bar and software was placed in target
directory. Then I uninstalled package. And when I enter:

rpm -qa shows, that packeg is istalled
rpm -e can't uninstall package, 'cos it is not installed
rpm -i cant install package, 'cos it is installed

I have no problem when I try to install or uninstall others packeges.
My system is: RH 7.0.
What is going on? How to install this package and what to do that command
rpm -qa doesn't show message that package is already installed?

Best regards,

it looks like you managed to have Linux see your nonstandard cdrom as a
new device, that's very good, surely for a newbie! you don't really
need to add an entry to fstab to mount it during install. just mount
the device (possibly /dev/cdrom, otherwise look at any entry like
/dev/hd* made during the boot process) explicitlty on the mount point
you say you see under /mnt (or mkdir /mnt/cd).

mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cd

>[...] modem and PPP dial up

maybe you could have a look at PAP and Chap, they provided me some
headaches months ago. I can't remember how I solved it, it was not
difficult, just a bit confusing. look at /var/log/messages or
whatever it is called. you will see a log of the session (possibly
quite a lot of them), it will surely provide the hints you need.

Yes. Use PartitionMagic, which works with ext2 filesystems as well.

Subject: Adaptec 29160 & Linux, what's the true story?
Date: Thu, 19 Oct 2000 10:15:24 GMT

Hi,

Does anyone know the correct story about Adaptec 29160 support under
Linux? I've got a '160 which I'd like to use - the box says that linux
drivers are available from independant sources, and indeed Adaptec's
site doesn't mention linux under its driver downloads section (they
seem to support just about everything else though - bah!)

Looking at usenet posts, I've seen all kinds of information. That it's
supported directly by Adaptec, that it's supported under Redhat 6.2's
kernel (2.2.14 I think), that it's not supported at all, that it will
work with RH6.2 but in a degraded state etc. - comments from anyone out
there actually using this card are welcome :)

Also, at some point I need to buy a decent system to surround this card
- I saw some reference to most motherboards with 64 bit PCI slots using
some chipset which Linux doesn't support (sorry, can't remember the
number now!); what chipsets should I be looking out for which will be
supported correctly?

cheers,

Jules

Hi, I'm trying to upgrade my RH 5.2 to RH 6.2. But there is a problem.
I have copied the files from a sunsite from the directory /i386. There are
4000 files in 370 dirs (windows reported). Their size altogether is
644.355.439 bytes.
I put the files on a CD-RW (normal, not bootable). The filesystem I used was
joliet.
They top of the directory structure is as follows:

du-s.txt
boot.cat
index.html
RPM-GPG-KEY
RELEASE-NOTES
Readme
Copying
autorun
/RedHat
/misc
/images
/dosutils
/doc

So that should be sorted.(?)
I've made a boot disk with the boot image "boot.img" found in /images
When the systems boot, the first screen where install method is selected
pops. When I select the the first option (i.e. press ENTER) the initrd.img
and vmlinuz is loaded. The latter however is not loaded fully, and it
terminates with the following screen:

running install
rinning /sbin/loader
Traceback (innermost last):

  File "/usr/lib/anaconda/gettext_rh.py", line 43, in ?

disabling swap...
unmounting filesystems
        /mnt/source
        /dev/pts
        /proc
ejecting cdrom
you may safely reboot your system

That's it. I get the same response if I use the "text" option. If the expert
mode is enabled the final result is the same. After the dialog box where
devices can be added is closed with the "Done" option, it's the same again.

E:\misc\src\anaconda (i.e. the \misc\src\anaconda\ on the CDrom drive)
contains the following directories

balkan

gnome-map

Pleaase! Help me. Any suggestions (or solutions :) ) will be appreciated. If
you even feel like inquiring :) for more details, please feel free.
