I wasn't even talking to you: why would you be provoced?

I think it should be frowned upon.
I suspect that a lot of non-english post are posted here by people unaware
of the fact that it will reduce their chances on help.

> I don't agree at all with the idea of flaming people who use a national

I just answered another german post, and then ran into this one.
I got slightly agitated. People come her for help, but lots of them
don't even try to solve their problems on their own first. If you do
a search on the web with the questions you have, no doubt the
german NG's would have popped up.
Then the OP could have posted there, in german

I just checked: "de.comp.os.unix.linux.*" groups exist.
They are a far better place to post in german if you'd prefer.

I'm not just pointing these things out to german posters.
Whenever I run into french posts, I try to help, and point out to
post in english. On other non-english posts (which I cannot read),
I'll respond in dutch.

> But anyway, even if someone posted in Icelandic, I wouldn't mind!

Ik ook niet
Waarom zou ik ook?

I think it's either arrogance, but more frequently ignorance to not post in
english.
In both situations, the posters can be made aware that posting in english
is preffered. If you want help, you can at least try to be understood.

It does no such thing.
You should partition your HardDiskDrive in two parts.
On the first partition you install windows.
The second partition you leave untouched.
When you're done installing windows, put the RH CD in your
CDROM player, and reboot. Now you can delete the second partition
and install linux there.

I really don't know when it would force you to install a network.
If you get an error, write the exact error message down, and post that here.
(And a few of the previous messages too)

(PS. if you'd prefer german, post in de.comp.os.unix.linux.misc)

Search the NG's old posts at deja.com.
IIRC, there is an option in the kernel config you should set to no.
I can't remember which one exactly, so may the google be with you :-)

The answer to that question is YES!
You get such an accurate message, and it still wasn't enough.
I can hardly believe this. Please read some manpages before you destroy
anything

You may *wanted* to mount the logical inside, but you were definately not
doing that.

A now I get it.
hda2 is the extended partition
hda3 and hda4 don't exist.
hda5 is the logical partition you want to mount.

`/sbin/fdisk -l /dev/hd[a-d]`
would have showed you why it failed.

You can always add a TZ variable in your shell. If you add that to your
.bash_profile you can get your own private timezone independent of all
other users on the system.

Just update Mandrake, but don't install anything.
Mandrake will prompt you to configure X again, this will fix the problem.

Subject: USB Printer not working! Help!
Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 17:29:09 -0800

I can't get my new Epson 875DCS USB printer to work. I'm using Progeny
Linux (Debian based) with a 2.4.2 kernel. The kernel *is* compiled with
proper USB support. Using usbview, the printer is showing up as an
available device. Following the instructions at linuxnewbie.org, I
created a node in the /dev/usb folder for the printer (lp0). I was able
to set up the printer in printtool, but I can't get anything to print.
I've tried sending data directly to the device using 'cat file.txt >
/dev/usb/lp0' with no affect. When trying to add a printer using kups,
it tells me that it can't find any devices. I've searched through all
the documentation that I can find online and nothing seems to help. If I
had to guess, I'd say that the node I created isn't pointing to the
printer, but I can't find any documentation on the /dev folder (which
seems to me to be a serious omission in Linux documentation, but maybe
I'm just not looking in the right place). I even tried making a node at
/dev/usblp0 (i.e., not in the /dev/usb folder), but again, nothing. The
printer works fine in Windows ME, so I know it's not defective. Any help
with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
- Stealth Dave

Dear All,

I'm running SUSE 6.3 as Server, with a 50GB software raid drive
as samba file server. I would like to use dump to create some
generic level 0 backups, but as I perform a simple command like

  dump -0u /dev/tape /raid/DIRECTORY

the system gets very heavy loaded, i.e. I get no more response
in the shell, even "ls" or "ps" isn't working, and a few seconds
later I hear the disk drive working (very busy!!!) and I can't do
anything. In the shell, were I've started the dump, I've typed
CTRL+C, and I got back to command line atfer about 10 min !!!

I can't believe that dump is using the system that heavy. I've used
dump (better vdump) on a DEC workstation often before, and I never
run in such problems.

Does anyone have an idea ?

Thanx, Joerg

I use gdm, so things may be different for your case:

make sure [xg]dm is running on the linux machine

in /etc/X11/gdm/gdm/conf, go to the xdmcp section
and set enable to 1

[xdmcp]
Enable=1

That's all I had to do.

Does anyone have experience of the above mouse which is a light emitting
device but works via the PS2 input.

It works ok in Windoze of course, but I cannot get it to scroll in Linux

I am using Mandrake 7.2 and have tried the "imwheel" program.
I have changed the XF86Config file as per the instructions for imwheel
for a PS2 mouse.
The instructions are to comment out # Emulate 3 buttons
                                                   # Emulate3Timeout 50
and to add the line ZAxisMapping 4 5

Is this correct for this mouse? Any suggestions as to what I could try?
Are there any other programs which would enable scrolling

Many thanks

Subject: Samba/ Squid disk access question.
Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 11:25:19 +0100

Hi!

I am using Linux @ home for my internet connection. This machine is always
on. To reduce the noise (esp. at night) I tuned back the Pentium 166 to 90
mhz, enabled bios power saving (turn off harddisk after 5 min.) and
disconnected all fans. Oh man, this sounds good....

However, when I start Samba, the harddisk spins up every now and then, even
when no machines are connected to my Linux box. I suppose SMB reads its
configuration file every now and then. This is the same for Squid which
keeps my harddisk spinning forever (but I suppose this is more complex...).

Does anybody how to prevent or reduce the spontaneous disk access for these
applications??? I am running on SuSE 7.0.

Thanks,
Marc

Hello.I am running Mandrake 8.0 beta 2 and have been struggling with sound
card setup .On boot, shows module loaded for ES1371 chipset(SB 16pci).CD
player works fine but cannot play any wav.files. I ran dmesg and it saw the
1371 chipset but I have nothing at all in my /dev files relating to sound .
I read the Linux sound how-to and it stated under "creating device files"
that they must be created (no kidding) and that they are normally created
during installation- it did not explain what I need to do if the files were
not created during installation.I tried to access (per how-to)cat
/dev/sndstat and guess what-it doesn't exist. Can somebody please make a
suggestion where I might find a little more helpful how-to that can tell me
how the device files are created and installed. I have also printed out the
user and reference manuals-all 550 pages- and did not see anything directly
related to this issue. If it is in the reference or user manuals, could you
please tell me what section and manual it is in? Or any helpful online
documentation would be good also.

I wouldn't assume squid ot samba be responsible for this "spontaneous" disk
access,
may be these are just some things like updatedb running from cron, check your
/etc/crontab.

But you can always shutdown those services SuSE has scripts:

rcsmb
rcsquid

to simplify this task.

You could power down your machine, if it makes too much noise.

Good luck
