I have had simialr trouble. I have RH Linux 6.2 instaled into the last 3GB
on a 12GB drive on my Dell Latitude CPx-J750 and it will only boot from a
floppy. No WAY can I get that sucker to come up off the hard disk.
I think that the latest, large disks are causing some distros of Linux
severe heart burn.
I read the large disk FAQ and it seemed long on blah, blah and short on
anything useful in my case. I've dealt with stufff like this for years and
always worked it out....but this one has me stumped.

Subject: Embedded Audio with Linux

I got the PhatLinux distribution recently, and only discovered trying to
configure X-Windows that both my graphics and audio are integrated into the
mainboard. After searching around on the internet, I managed to get Linux
drivers for the Intel 810 graphics chipset, but I've drawn a total blank on
the audio.
I think the manual is saying that my 'sound card' is based on the Creative
ES1373 chip, running on PCI Bus. It also says that it is AC '97 compliant
(which, after some research, I've found is some kind of audio codec standard
set up by Intel).
Any ideas for getting this to work under Linux / XFree86, anybody?
Cheers,
Tom Cashman

So what exactly does clustering offer that networking doesn't ? How
closely coupled are the machines ? Can processes migrate from a busy to
a less busy machine for example ?

My Red Hat 6.2 CD always prompted me for my network configuration details
during installation.
Now it never does. It is the same CD and same computer. What is the problem?
I have tried cleaning the CD again and again. The rest of the installation
goes OK except for entirely skipping the "which packages would you like to
install" and customise X. When I get to the end and it says its ready to
install, no files are ever installed!
What is going wrong?

Well, you can start with giving us some more information.
Free space doesn't fall from the sky. How would you like to do this/
Remove an other partition? or do you still have some unpartitioned space
on your HDD? Where is this space? Or do you have a new HDD, solely
intended for /var ?
With more information I may be able to give some assistance

cat /proc/pci, that should tell you lots of useful stuff.
If it's anything like the box I acquired recently, it's quite possibly an
esssolo1 thing - try that module, see what happens.

I've got an ATI Rage 128 video card and I'm using XFree86 3.3.6
(XFCon_rage128 X server).
I'm trying to use the fullscreen DGA mode with various programs (mainly
emulators like xmame). Up to now, I've only been able to make it work for
640x480 resolution. If I try any other resolution (800x600 for instance),
the screen turn black when I switch to fullscreen. The screen only switch
on again when I go back to normal window mode.
It's strange: I can go easily to each resolution I've defined in my
XF86config (320x240, 400x300, 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768) if I use the
Ctrl-Alt-+ key, but if I use fullscreen DGA mode 640x480 is the only
resolution that's displayed correctly.
Have you ever been able to use your ATI Rage 128 video card in full
screen DGA mode with any resolution other than 640x480 ? If so, could you
please send me your XF86config file by e-mail ?
I thank you in advance,

You need to use a CD-R. Linux needs special drivers to read CD-RW's and
I doubt that any installers load them.

Hi All,
I have a question regarding access between my Linux (RedHat 6.2) and
Windows (ME) boxes. After confiming all my IP address are OK i can ping
each machine by address and all is fine.(get a reply no problems) However,
when I attempt an FTP, telnet or HTTP access from my windows box, all is get
is no response. No denied access or connection refused, simply timed out.
As a matter of trying to narrow it down i installed RH 6.2 on my windows
machine and got the same results when trying to run services between the two
RH machines. All my inetd, hosts files are set correctly. RH and Windows
ME are also detecting my network cards ok.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be great.

I had it working with 2.3.11 - usb is still in experimental only you'll
need either the USB backport or upgrade to 2.4.0-test for now

I have efax working quite nicely with the fax script and the kde
interfaces kfax and ksendfax, for sending and viewing faxes.
But for receiving faxes, I can only do 'fax receive' from a terminal,
which seems only to do an immediate manual receive. The problem with
this is, if the fax comes a minute or so later, the receive facility has
timed out.
Documentation seems pretty thin for efax, only the man page and one
howto.
Does anyone know wether there is a 'wait' option?

Mark/John
I was very happy to see Mark's question because I have experienced the
EXACT problem that Mark describes. The only difference between Mark's
description and mine is that I have Linux installed on its own removable
hard drive. I'm using an external US Robotics 56K FaxModem with a Gateway
Solo 2500 notebook. I'm now using Linux 7.0 but have had the
same problem under 6.0 and 6.2.
I ran 'dmesg | more', as you suggested for Mark. Although I'm not positive
about everything that was displayed, the 'cs: IO port probe' lines indicate
that everything is 'clean'. Does the following mean anything?
'Serial driver version 4.27 with MANY_PORTS MULTIPORT SHARE_IRQ enabled'
Mark, I hope you don't mind that I piggyback on your question. At least
you know your problem isn't unique.
Thanks,
mamabird

I doubt that's the problem.
Linux needs special drivers to read the udf FS on a cd-RW, but since the
CD was formatted using joliet (an iso9660 extension) that's not the case
here.
Don't know what the problem is though, I always used iso images, never
had a problem with those.

Subject: Boot config advice wanted
Date: Thu, 19 Oct 2000 15:41:45 +0200
I've got a fairly large home system, with 4 harddrives.
2 SCSI, (an 18GB Atlas V and an old 9GB Atlas II)
2 IDE, both IBM 34GXP 20GBs
Currently, I have Windows 2000 on the Atlas V as my main system, Win98 on one IDE
drive and Debian on the other IDE drive.
Currently, I'm selecting which OS to boot by chenging boot order in my motherboard
BIOS. (It has options for SCSI first, IDE drive 1
or IDE drive 2). This way, I've been able to keep all OSes 100% isolated from each
other, which has been nice during the time I've
spent tinkering with and learning Linux (I'm a linux newbie). Whenever I want to
reinstall an OS (which happens fairly often :), I
can fdisk, reformat the specific drive without having to mess with the other drives.
Anyway, from what I've been learning about LILO and the Win2k boot loader, I'm
starting to think there should be a way of keeping
the convenience of having the OSes isolated, by just somehow linking the Win2k and
LILO bootloaders together.
My question is can this be done, and if so, how? I'm not asking for the keystrokes,
but a general idea of how to set things up would
be nice. I fear I'm a bit fuzzy on how bootloaders work, though I'm getting the hang
of LILO somewhat. I've managed to set up two
Linux installs on my Linux drive and have a bootmenu to select from those two. (Debian
and a homebrewed linuxfromscratch, btw)
Anyway, advice will be much appreciated.

You can add "other" parts in your lilo.conf that point to other
discs/partitions, and you should pay specific attention to the
`map-drive to`
commands. This way you can point to another bootloader (I presume
/dev/hda1 for win98 and /dev/sda1 for win200
You can also use the NT loader (win2000=NT) as the primary bootloader,
but I don't know anything about that(there's a HOW-TO on this topic
though).
