You may need the annaconda update from redhat. You make a second diskette,
then type 'linux updates' and the install process will (eventually) ask for
the update diskette.
And don't forget to clean up your base and rpms directories before
installing.

Mandrake 7.1 only found and installed one of my network cards. How do I install
the second one? Only one is listed in the HardDrake utility, and there does not
appear to be a way to add an additional one with that utility. Also, in the
Kernel Module field of the network configuration, in the pull down list of
available modules, the driver for my second card is not listed.
Please, echo your response to e-mail, just in case.
Thanks in advance!

Redhat announced that openssl was available for rh6.2. Great!! I
downloaded it and installed the RPMs. Now what really intrest me is using
SSH, however, all the packages are for RH 7.0 and trying to install it
requires tons of dependecies that need to be resolved. (RPM, initscripts
etc ...)
I was wondering if anyone has set up SSH on RH 6.2 using the openssl
packages the RH has made available, and what version of SSH did you use.
THanks,
scott.

Does mkinitrd directly look in /lib/modules/$(uname -r), or does it use
the modutils? In any case, you need up-to-date modutils, as discussed in
Documentation/Changes.

I've read the documentation in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound and
I've realized that there's no posibility of compiling newer kernel
versions to support this soundcard. I compiled a 2.2.13 kernel for this
but I haven't been able to find the ADLIB options in 2.2.16 and 2.2.17

I am a Linux user and advocate...
I am a former Windows user myself...
I want to help other Windows users convert to Linux.
I feel that this forum and others like it are poorly suited to this
purpose.
Most Windows users don't read manuals and aren't programmers and
therefore...
Answers like "RTFM", "Have you read the FAQs?", and "Just re-compile the
kernel"...
Are not good answers for Windows users trying Linux for the first time.
This isn't helpful, feels like an attack, and drives these folks away...
Which is not good for Linux in the short term or long run.
If you feel the same way, and are knowledgeable about Linux...
And can spend a little time answering questions...
And don't mind answering simple questions...
Don't mind answering them repeatedly...
And can do it without anger, contempt, egotism, condescendence, etc...
Please e-mail me so we can create a place condusive to the goal...
Of helping average Window users try Linux and convert to Linux.

No, this is the place. Nothing wrong with directing people from
here to answers elsewhere, though. I do that when I have already
written an appropriate article and have it on my web site. But
the answers *start* in the ng's 'cause that's where the people

Just been through this, clean RH7.0 install, linksys etherfast 10/100
4.1 card, won't work with shipped tulip driver.
Downloaded the full www.scyld.com network driver rpm and installed it,
but it barfed on compiling pci_skeleton. It turned out that the
kernel source was not installed by default, and source files from
there were needed by the network driver package compile. I used rpm
to install the kernal source code off the cd, then used rpm to install
the network driver package from scyld, and everything worked. My
linksys tulip card is up and running.
If you need more details on what I did, send me mail.
Good luck,

What is the difference between using the -D option and
not using it? The man pages are fairly confusing.
Do all parameters need to be passed in for each new user?
Can the system assign unique incremental UID's for each new user?
Can I use the -m option to only copy some of the files
from /etc/skel in to the new users home directory? That
is I want user "joe" to get .profile and user "tom" to
get .bash_profile.
Thanks.

Yes, thank you, this is the idea I had in mind.
Is there something unsafe about booting this way?
>
> "man lilo.conf" helps.

What does lilo.conf have to say about your suggestion?
"unsafe: Do not access the boot sector at map creation time. This
disables some sanity checks, including a partition table check. If the
boot sector is on a fixed-format floppy disk device, using UNSAFE
avoids the need to put a readable disk into the drive when running
the map installer. `unsafe' and `table' are mutually incompatible."
If that paragraph is supposed to express the idea "consult lilo boot
sector on other partition", I would say it needs work.

I guess you are not using a win modem, and that it is a Hayes
compatible one.
I am a bit puzzled why it does not work under windows. This would point
towards a modem problem.
Have you tried minicom under linux or hyper terminal under windows by
issuing an AT command? e.g. ATD0345484950 should get you to railway
enquiries.
If that's working then leastways you know that your modem and serial
port is ok, and one can take it from there.

DNS is a passive service, by default. It listens, and only listens
to people who _explicitly_ talk to it. Unless someone has configured
their system to request services from the Linux box, running named on
it will have absolutely no effect on the network (In fact, you can
run named as a caching nameserver on a linux box and it will reduce
the load on the main nameserver (but only for the single linux box)).
You're thinking of the microsoft crap which broadcasts service
availability. Unix doesn't work that way (well, except for rusersd
and rwhod which aren't enabled anyway by default for that very
reason).
Named listens, it doesn't talk.

Hi, I'm having a problem with the network on RedHat 7.0. Here is my
machine configuration:
- Abit KA7 w/ memory hole 15M-16M enabled
- SB 128 PCI
- 3Com EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI (3C905C-TX)
- Voodoo3
I was able to install through FTP, meaning that the boot disk was able
to recognize my ethernet card, right?. The problem is when I boot to
Linux, it's not starting the eth0. Doing ifconfig -a only lists "lo"
interface, but it's listed in netcfg. However, when I tried to start
eth0 through netcfg, it's not working and saying "delaying ..."
something. Should there be /dev/eth0? Do I need to put alias="mem=128M"
in /etc/lilo.conf?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Guys,
wanna see something funny?
I installed Psionics' Portsentry and then visited grc.com and run their
portscanner.
grc.com lasted about 1/2 a second before portsentry blocked it!
tail /var/log/messages told the story!
even more amusing was watching the report page loading from grc.
once the report page had loaded, asking for another scan revealed a totally
invisible system.. impressive!
grc's reports are fairly complementary when it can catch you out a wee bit, but
it was notably terse when it could find -=nothing=- 8-O
