you can't call (for example) redhat support for support a a
"miniture linux made from redhat".
I dont think that redhat (For example) are going to keep things the same
just so you can make the miniture linux the same way from every version ...

It is difficult.
filesystem layout and selection of libraries have to made.

Any that gives you a boost to your cerebral cpu power.
Otherwise you wont get anywhere.
like,I found a flash drive that wont boot with new award bios computers.

Hello, can someone help?
Whenever I try to boot from the cd to install the SQL, the messge comes up:
failed regarding booting from my cd; and my boot sequence is correct. I'm
trying to install MySQL on a minimum installation of SuSE Linux 6.4. I'm

Dear All,
Thanks for all the useful posting.
In view of the damage I could inflict on the file partition system, I
have decided to skip the part about DIY manipulation of LILO.
Holding on to a deep breath, 8-) I booted LINUX from the CDROM (RH6.0)
and at the boot prompt, started the install(ation process)... and chose
Upgrade...(Custom Installation...) From the 'Lilo Installation screen'
on LILO is placed on the MBR and as a simple cosmetic touch up, I went
on to edit/rename 'dos' as 'win95'.
For now everything is working fine. Linux and X-windows, I will need to
test out all the components that was selected. BTW, it is really a pain
trying to jot down on paper so much details. Sometimes I think I want
to train a camera on the screen to take a snap-shot every now and then
to record all the selection on a WYSIWYG basis. :-(
Does anyone has a neat way of doing screen dump during installation?
Thanks for all the help.

7.0 have broken glibc. It has problems with threads. For example JDK1.2.2
doesn't work on 7.0 out of the box.
I would recommend to download and install the newest version of glibc.

Add this to /etc/lilo.conf
append="mem=256M"
Then run /sbin/lilo

If Linux is about anything, it's about choice. But the opportunities that
choice provides come at a price - Linux users have the responsibility to be
better informed and more involved than users of Windows, which offers choice
mostly only at a superficial level. Anyone who is unwilling to read a FAQ
or HOWTO, in order to find answers, should not, IMO, get involved with
Linux.
Even _with_ responsibility and involvement as entry criteria, BTW, c.o.l.m
is a VERY busy newsgroup. Clearly, there is not much spare bandwidth here
for tire-kickers.
> Which is not good for Linux in the short term or long run.
Why? Linux has a very well established user base. Not everyone has to, or
should, run Linux. I believe that most Linux users would embrace that view.

I, for one, have learned lots from this ng, most of it by lurking and paying
attention. Nobody here is unwilling to help. Most _love_ to help.

Subject: ftp missing!!
Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2000 02:08:19 GMT
Hi,
I am surprisingly finding that ftp service is missing from the
installation of my Redhat Linux 6.0 (i386).
Although the entries are there in /etc/services and /etc/inetd.conf the
command that is specified in inetd.conf (i.e. in.ftpd) is missing from
the system. I tried an upgrade from the installation cdrom for that
service - it says in a log in /temp/upgrade.log that it has upgraded
ftp but still I don't find it in the system. Naturally I cannot connect
to the linux machine through ftp client from other machines.
By the way ping, telnet etc. work fine.
Can anybody help?

Some Q's
1) Does parted work when there is a Windoze partition on the disk?
2) Can parted move the win/linux boundary, or only linux/linux
boundaries?
3) Does parted work with SuSE linux?

Subject: Slackware root disk broken links
Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2000 02:58:28 GMT
Hi,
I'm trying to do a zip drive install onto an older laptop with Slackware
7.1. I'm following the steps in the zip-install-HOWTO but I'm stuck
with the creation of the root disk.
To create the root disk I run:
$ dd if=text of=/dev/fd0
And this works fine, but then when I mount the floppy and cd
/mnt/floppy/lib there are all these broken library links. For example:
libcom_err.so.2
libcrypt.so.1
libext2fs.so.2
etc...there's 10 links total. The library files that they SHOULD be
pointing to are in the directory too.??? Doesn't make sense.
Also on the root floppy there is are broken links with
boot -> /mnt/boot
cdrom -> /var/log/mount
Should I be worrying about these? Seeing that I don't have a cdrom on
the laptop anyway. But don't know if I should have the boot link fixed.
I've tried this with both the text.gz and the color.gz and I"m getting
the same problems.
Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening and how to fix it?

What does "rpm -q ftp" show? If nothing, load ftp-0.16-x from the CD.

Maybe. But both cfdisk and fdisk seemed to be willing to let me

I even tried creating another primary partition. I got the
same error from mke2fs: " Invalid argument passed to ext2 library while

I took a look at the parted docs. It *looks* like I can do the following:
1) Copy my whole "/" tree to hda (lots of free space there)
2) Boot from a bootdisk (provided at ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/parted/bootdisk/ )
3) Use parted to wipe out my old extended partition (containing "/") on
hdb, make a new one of the right size, and copy everything back.
4) Reboot and pray.
Odds of this working?
