rpm -q ftp shows : ftp-0.10-12
Still it doesn,t work.
I tried uninstalling and re-installing the ftp-0.10-22.i386.rpm located
in Redhat/RPMS/ directory in the cd. No hope yet.

When give a find : find / -name "*ftpd" -print
 it finds files like /usr/lib/linuxconf/help.eng/wuftpd etc.
But I don't find any executables in /usr/sbin or /usr/bin.
I find in.tftpd in /usr/sbin - not something like in.ftpd.

Could you pls. help further ?

Thanks

Have any of you successfully set up a Linux firewall so that Win98 games
behind it can run through it. Specifically Microsoft gaming Zone.

Redhat 6.2. .

Can you let me know what sequence of commands you used or send me the
rc.local, rc.firewall and rc.portfw

Have you turned on ppp debugging and checked the

That should tell you where to start looking anyway.

A caching nameserver that allows access only from localhost
would be perfectly acceptable in any network, and a good way
to both reduce network traffic and speed up name resolution for
the workstation user.

You would definitely not want to be working for the pointy haired
boss that had a problem with that!

He would have no way of knowing whether or not
your system was running dns unless he explicitly
queried it, and why would he do that, too much time
on his hands?

It is much more likely that he has no idea what
he is talking about, and feels threatened by what he
neither controls nor understands, so all he can think
to do is to try to suppress it.

Run a caching named, and set up acls such that ONLY
localhost can query it - or get medeival and set up firewall
rules such that nobody but localhost can reach port 53
on your linux system.

As a result of another suggestion, yes, and it was very revealing.

pppd[16611]: pppd 2.3.11 started by root, uid 0
ifup-ppp: pppd started for ppp0 on /dev/modem at 115200
WvDial: WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.41

WvDial: OK

WvDial: Configuration does not specify a valid phone number.
WvDial: Configuration does not specify a valid login name.
WvDial: Configuration does not specify a valid password.
pppd[16611]: Connect script failed

(this cycled repeatedly, presumably, as ppp retried the script)

I could identify no configuration file to add this missing information
to; it's already in the ppp configuration files.

I found the supposed Red Hat wvdial configuration utility, rp3, on the
distribution disk; however, it won't install due to an unsatisfied
dependency on libpanel_applet.so.0, which doesn't appear to be on the
hard disk or the CD.

I tried the Mandrake KWvdial, which worked up to a point: it dialed
and connected to the ISP, but didn't know to try "1" instead of "ppp"
as the post-login prompt as to what type of connection to establish;
the server dropped the connection after 3 tries.On Sat, 21 Oct 2000

Subject: success with USB mouse
Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2000 22:35:15 GMT

Of course, a lot of questions are asked in this newsgroup...however, I
always find it very useful when people make posts on how they were
successful at doing something. I recently had success (finally!)
getting my USB mouse working, and hence, the third button. (the wheel
I am still working on).

To get it to work, I used kernel 2.2.15 with no backport applied. I
configured the mouse to load as a module (since can't yet put it right
in the kernel). I added the two lines in startup /etc/rc.d/rc.local

/sbin/insmod /lib/modules/2.2.15/usb/mousedev.o
/sbin/insmod /lib/modules/2.2.15/usb/usbmouse.o

When I start up, the mouse console services seem to mess up, with a
report
oops, gpm.c could not be loaded for /dev/mouse

but when the USB detection occurs, the mouse works fine. I would
appreciate any comments on this setup.

Thanks!

Dan

p.s. I choose 3 button USB mouse in mouseconfig (or however one would
choose their mouse, I use the gui harddrake for Linux Mandrake 7.1)

 Ok, Stan, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

 I decided the simplest approach would be to make the lilo.conf files
for the two setups -- redhat61 on /dev/hda4 and redhat7 on /dev/hdc2 --
perfectly symmetric, which I did as follows:

 ------ redhat61 ------
 boot = /dev/hda4
 install = /boot/boot.b
 map     = /boot/map
 message = /boot/message
 # simulate user key-press
 prompt # else user has to press CTRL
 # give user time to think
 #delay = 1800 # seconds = delay/10
 default = redhat61
 image = /boot/vmlinuz
   label = redhat61
   append = "reboot=warm"
   initrd = /boot/initrd
   root = /dev/hda4
   read-only
   vga = ask
 other = /dev/hdc2
   label = redhat7
 other = /dev/hda1
   label = windowsme
   table = /dev/hda
 ------ end redhat61 ------

 ------ redhat7 ------
 boot = /dev/hdc2
 install = /boot/boot.b
 map     = /boot/map
 message = /boot/message
 # simulate user key-press
 prompt # else user has to press CTRL
 # give user time to think
 #delay = 1800 # seconds = delay/10
 default = redhat7
 image = /boot/vmlinuz
   label = redhat7
   append = "nousb reboot=warm" # back-UPS Pro 500 usb problem!
   initrd = /boot/initrd
   root = /dev/hdc2
   read-only
   vga = ask
 other = /dev/hda4
   label = redhat61
 other = /dev/hda1
   label = windowsme
   table = /dev/hda
 ------ end redhat7 ------

 If my understanding of lilo is correct, the symmetry of these two
lilo.conf files leads me to believe that the resulting boot interfaces
should work a correspondingly symmetric fashion, which -- given that
/dev/hda4 is the active partition on /dev/hda -- they appear to do, so
to that extent at least my understanding seems to be confirmed.

 I will try it this way for awhile and keep a watchful eye on it.

 Thanks again!

YES YES YES YES YES, okay, I get a little excited, but you know, that
is what we live for!!! (I am sure I will be pissed again tomorrow,
but it keeps me going). Okay, I got the wheel to work on my
mouse...this is how I did it...

In the pointers section, i would add the standard

Protocol "IMPS/2"
Device "dev/mouse"
Buttons 5
ZAxisMapping 4 5

but each time I did this, my mouse would go wacky. So, I got the usb
mouse to work with the previous message in the thread. Then I added
the ZAxisMapping and changed Protocol from regular PS/2 to IMPS/2 and
my mouse no longer went wacky. I believe this is because the
conflicts with gpm siezed because the mouse was delivering data
through a different port. Again, any comments are welcome!

I'm trying to do a FTP install since I don't have a CDROM (RH 7.0), but
everytime I try to setup the NIC, it errors out because it can't load the
driver module (I'm trying tulip, but have tried several others). I even try
to manually configure the i/o address, it still doesn't work. I suppose I
could be entering the address wrong (Win 95 indicates an IO range of 1000 to
10FF -- what should I be entering at the prompt?) Although I could go the
hard drive install route, I'd prefer not to. Any suggestions on how to get

Looks like the wvdial configuration file is the problem.

>
> I could identify no configuration file to add this missing information
> to; it's already in the ppp configuration files.

I use chat with a script created using linuxconf myself, but
wvdial uses a config file named /etc/wvdial.conf to store
the ISP account and dialing info. The file should look
something like this:

===== begin /etc/wvdial.conf =========
[Dialer Defaults]
Modem = /dev/ttyS2
Baud = 57600
Init = ATZ
Init2 = AT S11=50
Phone = 555-4242
Username = myusername
Password = my-password

[Dialer phone2]
Phone = 555-4243

[Dialer shh]
Init3 = ATM0

[Dialer pulse]
Dial Command = ATDP

===== end /etc/wvdial.conf =========

You can use the wvdialconf program to generate modem
device configuration settings for your modem, it will
write them to the wvdial.conf file. You will still
need to edit wvdial.conf to add your ISP account info.

Hope this helps,
Bluster
