I've used 35480As on two different Red Hat 6.X systems and it's been
trivial. There is, in addition, no scinit.def file.

If you can honestly say that, you did not look very far nor try very hard.

http://209.38.194.51/ddstree/symptom3.html is place for DDS troubleshooting
help.

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/prodhome/hp35480add9824.html is the starting
place for finding information about the drive.

http://forum1.support.hp.com:88/servlet/CLA_Servlet.Login?forumNum=000221
is the place to sign up for and enter the HP Community Forum for HP
Surestore DAT Tape Drives. Here you can read an actual person's answers to
specific questions from people who have signed up for the Forum. If you go
there, you will see several questions from me.

I downloaded the entire manual set in PDF form from one of HP's web sites,
but I did not bookmark the page. The manuals are in a 1.3MB tar.gz file
(maybe a tar file which I compressed on my system).

If the tape has been loaded more than 99 times, the drive will
automatically eject it. Try a different tape.

If the tape won't stay loaded, errors from mt and tar are normal.

If you need the data on the 5Gig partition you better back it up.
I had a similar problem. The only way i got it was to redo the drive.

have a boot disk handy.
did you try fdisk /mbr

I have put first RH then Caldera on a Compaq machine. The problems
I see are:

1. You will get NO HELP from the hardware manufacturer if you put
LINUX on "their" machine. In fact, Compaq's solution to problems
is to have you run their "Quick Restore" which repartitions and
reformats the disk. This would kill your LINUX.

2. Some branded machines like Compaq hide the CMOS settings and
make it more difficult for you to change things, and they dont
document it. In particular, you need to be careful about the
write protection of the MBR which is where LILO should be written.

3. Many of these branded machines use on-board accessories, like
sound, SCSI, 10/100 BT, etc, and these customized features (while
supported by Win due to special drivers) are sometimes not supported
by LINUX. This also has an effect on upgradeability.

My experience with non-branded machines has been much more pleasant
than with branded machines. I chose the branded machine mostly for
the price. Oddly enough with all the rebates the Compaq was less
expensive that a non-branded machine.

Good luck.

It sounds like the new install set the default runlevel
to 3 (full network no GUI) which makes sense since you
had to install X11 by hand. The default runlevel is set
in the /etc/inittab file. Most distro's use these
definitions of runlevels:

0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
1 - Single user mode
2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking)
3 - Full multiuser mode
4 - unused
5 - X11
6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)

To change the default runlevel to 5 (X11 login) edit the
/etc/inittab file, look near the top of the file for a line
that looks like this:

id:3:initdefault:

and change *only* the 3 to a 5 (be carefull while messing
with this file, as it is resposible for part of the boot process)

That will make the system boot to the GUI login prompt.
To go to runlevel 5 without rebooting use the init command, e.g.

# init 5

I have a scsi hard drive with the first 10 gigs or so taken up by my C:
partition and my partition contain my windows 2000 setup. I would like to
get dual boot working without killing my 2k partition, but have been having
problems. LILO from the redhat 6.2 installation failed to work (I presume
since I could not put the root partition within the fist 1024 cylinders).
BootMagic crashes when I try to run it from its floppy disks and parted will
not find my hard drive when I boot using the standard parted boot floppy. As
a result I can't figure out a way to resize my C partiton to put the root
near the beginning of the drive. Does anyone have any ideas how to get
around these problems? Thanks.

Why would you want to have your server in the living room? I have mine in the
garage. My music client boot off a flash drive (hard disks are too noisy) and play
music over NFS. Furthermore, i underclock my CPU (no fan) and lower the power
supply fan speed with a small resistor (30 ohms). I hardly hear anything other than
the music.

Someone mensioned that Compaq put their soft bios on the hard disk. It wouldn't
work with Linux.

Well that is not what my fdisk (v2.10f) man page says:

" A sync() and a BLKRRPART ioctl() (reread partition table
from disk) are performed before exiting when the partition
table has been updated. Long ago it used to be necessary
to reboot after the use of fdisk. I do not think this is
the case anymore - indeed, rebooting too quickly might
cause loss of not-yet-written data. Note that both the
kernel and the disk hardware may buffer data."

Are they fibbin'? wouldn't be the first time...

Do you mean a "swap" partition, as opposed to swap file? ...or another
partition to install Linux onto. I had understood that Mandrake would
handle the partitioning. I am now running a single partition. I have
an older Win95 version of Partition Magic. Will that work with '98?
How big should I make the Linux partition? I have just under 1 gig
free on my HD.

I'm confused now. What "spare" partition? ...the one I create to
install Mandrake?

I've been checking in at www.linuxnewbie.net and MandrakeUser.net,
trying to get a feel for what I'm in for. Lot of seemingly good stuff
there....

Subject: How do I mix libc5 apps with glibc2.1 apps?
Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2000 16:47:51 -0400

I'm running Redhat 7.0 and everything seems ok so far, except that I can
no longer run Matlab like I could under RH 6.2. A little research
showed that Matlab 5.3.1 was built off the libc5 libraries - which I
don't have. I'm wondering what I need to do to run apps built off
either set of libraries. It was suggested that I get the rpm
ld.so-1.9.11 and install that. I'm a little worried I'll overwrite an
existing library, though. Ideally I could just put the libc5 libraries
in their own separate dir, but I'm not quite sure how to do that.

I'm also sure that I don't really understand enough about this to avoid
doing damage - if anybody has any suggestions on what to do - or not to
do - then I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

I am new to Linux, so please bear with me.
During the installation, XConfigurator did not list any rage 128 drivers for
this card. I followed the link from ATI's website and to make a long story
short, found that I need to install the Linux-ix86-glibc21 package.
Hopefully I am on the right track so far. I downloaded this package in
Windows to a FAT16 drive, then copied the files to my Linux partition in the
/root/installs/xfree86/ directory in which I created. When I run the
Xinstall.sh script, it gives me a list of files (all of the .tgz files) that
need to be in the current directory. I am in the current directory when
running the script. I type this command while in the /root/installs/xfree86/
directory:
sh Xinstall.sh

Am I on the right track to get X to work with my video card, and why might I
be getting this error.

TIA for any help,
Frank Goffena

I have about 60 GB of disk space available for mp3 (~ 1 MB/min). I can play
roughly 60,000 minutes without repeating, or 1,000 hours or 41 days. Actually, i
only have about 1 GB of mp3s.
