Do you have the "kernel headers" package installed? If so, do you have the
(RedHat-needed) symbolic link from /usr/include/asm to somewhere like
/usr/src/linux/include/asm? (The latter may itself be a symbolic link to
/usr/src/linux/include/asm-i386 or something else appropriate.)

Hi,

I have a SoundBlaster 16 PCI soundcard that I'm trying to use with Linux.
What module(s) should I be loading to use it? I've tried the es1371 module,
but that doesn't seem to have microphone support.

Thanks,

I tried PPPoE

PPPoE times out during connection.

I have eth0 set to dhcp ... when the box boots and when it gets to
DHCP is states that it can't find DHCP client.

I think the problem here is that the Linux box is just not getting an
IP address from the DSL provider.

Hello everyone. I am trying to set up a PLIP connection between my 2
linux boxes. Kernel 2.2.15 with plip as modules. I load the PLIP module and
here is what it says:
[root@localhost /]# insmod plip io 378 irq 7
Using /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/net/plip.o
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/net/plip.o: init_module: Device or resource busy

I have checked the io and irq and they are right...I've made sure the plip0
interface is down. I've made sure lpr and the lp daemon aren't
running/loaded. Any suggestions or ideas?

Also...one of my comp's have a 953mb partition. I run df and it says drive is
953mb, 903 used...and zero free! Any ideas for why that is happening?

I got the updated ext2fsprogs package and I *thought* I
remembered that it promised it had a defrag tool for ext2.
But I didn't see one. Anyone know of one?

Also, are there any gotchas when defragging the root

an alternative root hierarchy I can boot to when
defragging, assuming I find such a tool. But
do I need to run lilo again afterwards, or
something?

Well, it rather depends where you are and what your local cable
companies are like. For what it's worth, assuming no delays beyond my
512Kbps cap (ho ho), I could download 20Gb in just under four days, and
have 5Gb uploaded in the same time. I pay 25 UK pounds a month.

Of course, my account is for home use, not for a business. Depending on
your cable company, the cost might be higher for business use. You'd
need to check local prices before writing up any kind of business plan.

why even defrag in the first place? You probably don't need to. Anyway,
why would you neeed to run LILO again? You don't have to run fdisk /mbr
after you defrag in Windows do you?

you need to configure the MIME type in httpd.conf. The web server
doesn't know what to do with the new MIME type and therefore just prints
it to the screen, through the browser.

I dont know what the MIME type would be but it should be just like PHP3
except with a 4 instead of a 3.....as an experiment rename a php4 file
from .php4 to .php3 and see if it loads properly that way. If it does
you know apache isn't recognizing .php4 as a php file.

For text mode, you can add the line "vga=ask" in /etc/lilo.conf and then
run lilo. At boot you will be shown a list of video modes and can choose
one. Remember the number, and then change /etc/lilo.conf to
"vga=<number>", and run lilo again.

Because the boot code has no knowledge of the filesystem, and so will be
unable to find the bootable kernel image if it's been moved.

I agree, though, that for the vast majority of systems, defragmenting
is unnecessary. (I would guess, also, that for the vast, VAST majority of
systems, it's unnecessary to defragment the root partition. Most of the
problems seem to be in systems where partitions are nearly full and have a
lot of files created and deleted, e.g., news spools, and those kinds of
directories shouldn't be on the root partition.)

That isn't true. The error the OP is getting is b/c his /boot partition
is beyond 1024th cylinder.
ADvice to OP: Redo your partitions so that /boot is under the 1024th
cylinder. You will have to delete your Win partitions and remake them.
Downloading the newest version of LILO gets rid of this problem.

Ah, well my kernel image is not on the root partition, it's on
the /boot partition. In that case, can I defrag the root partition
without rerunning lilo? Ignoring necessity here -- I ask mainly
to get a better understanding of the boot process.

This may be your problem. I am sitting at one computer (ishamael), and
I have the line '/mnt/cdrom *(ro)' in the /etc/exports file. I did
the '/usr/sbin/exportfs -r' bit, and restarted NFS for good measure
'/etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs restart'. I then ssh to another box on the home
LAN (asmodean), su to root, and then do 'mount -t nfs
ishamael:/mnt/cdrom /mnt/local' *Note* I had to make sure the
/etc/hosts file was properly fleshed out for this, otherwise I had to
use the ip addresses. I can descend into /mnt/local on asmodean just
fine, and access any files there I want.

No idea. I'd check the Diskless-HOWTO, and the Diskless-root-NFS-HOWTO,
for ideas, though. You may have to go to the LDP to get these, as
recent distro's have been a bit lax about including _all_ the HOWTO's.

2 possibilities:
1) Parallel port not working, modules not loaded, whatever.
2) I think PLIP didn't work right in the 2.2 series until 2.2.16.

>Also...one of my comp's have a 953mb partition. I run df and it says drive is
>953mb, 903 used...and zero free! Any ideas for why that is happening?

You have a filesystem format that reserves some space to deal with
fragmentation, notice below for an ext2 filesystem that used+avail<size:
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdb1 4127076 2723576 1193856 70% /u0
There is overhead. The root account can actually write files
into the "reserved" area and reach values over 100% to get close
to the 4127076 value above. User accounts cannot. This extra space
lets the OS keep fragmentation percentage still very low even when
the disk is "full". No need for a defrag utility, I rarely see any
UNIX/Linux filesystems with frag values above a few percent.

Sounds like a problem there. You need dhcpcd or pump (or other) DHCP
client installed Check the CD if it isn't.

Is the Cisco a router? (I think it is.) In which case, the linux box
