Subject: geforce2 GTS problem (LONG)
Date: Sun, 29 Oct 2000 23:25:35 -0500

i know i've seen all sorts of posts on this already, bu i still can't
get running. i just installed mandrake 7.1 after fooling around with
redhat 6.1 for a bit. (every time i'd try to install something in
rh6.1 it would tell me i needed 5 other packages first -- i'd install
four of them fine and the fifth would say i needed 5 more, etc, etc.).
ahh yes, but i digress.

i just did a clean install of mandrake 7.1 and then installed XFree86
4.0.1 according to the instructions on their website, and all seemed
to go well.

however, after trying to get the nvidia drivers loaded for my creative
annihilator geforce 2 gts, i'm becoming very frustrated.

i tried installing the mandrake7.1 kernel rpm ...
i tried building the rpm from source ...
i tried changing the driver in XF86Config from "nv" to "nvidia" ...

and still i crash out when trying to startx with a "no screens" error

it still looks to me like it's trying to load a driver for a geforce
256 or tnt(2) card... not my gts, but then again i really don't know
much about this ...

any help would be greatly appreciated

tia,

hagbard

An iso image is a binary file that is a 'picture' of the way the files
will be laid out on the cdrom. If you just burned the iso file to the
cdrom, well, you are now the proud owner of a new drink coaster. What
you will need to do, is use the image to create a CD from. I borrow a cd
burner at work when I need to do this, and the computer it is hooked up
to runs Win95 w/ Adaptec EZ-CD Creator. With that software installed, if
you right-click on an iso file, it will show an option to 'Create a
CD from image'. Other software probably has a similar option. Win95 can
burn an absolutely beautiful Linux CD. Isn't irony wonderful? ;)

try 'mount'? Seriously, you may want to check out your distro's
quickstart/install/new user guide. Failing that, go to the Linux
Documentation Project, and look for the Getting Started guide. It's a bit
old, but it will get you rolling.

As for the command you were looking for (assuming everything is set up right
in /etc/fstab):

mount /mnt/floppy

at the command line enter 'man mount' for details. For lots more info and a
window to your linux box, try 'man man' (i.e. the manual page about how to
use the manual... worth the time it takes)

I have done this myself in the past using "xcopy". You will need to
partition the new drive using Windows "fdisk" and make it "active".After copying you
Windows files to the new drive, place the new drive as master on your
primary IDE controller and temporarily disconnect the old drive. The new
drive should boot with no problems.

Have a look at aaron cline's site at www.geocities.com/ender7007/index.html. If you
find a
way to pass this info the the kernel when booting from a floppy (not hand-entered),
please
let me know.

I am running RH 7 on a ASUS A7V from an 8.4GB HD on the primary IDE controller with
Windows on a HD on the secondary (Promise) IDE controller. Because of this
configuration
I boot Linux froma floppy. In order for Linux to access Windows partitions I have to
pass the
Promise IDE addresses at boot. I have tried to insert an "append" statement in the
lilo.conf
in just about every position except doggy-style and the line is not passed. Yes, I
ran
/sbin/lilo after each change. The problem is that the lilo.conf file I need to change
is on the
floppy and is not affected by running /sbin/lilo.

Does anyone have any suggestions.

Thanks

Hi,

I had the same problem. It seems the CS4231 is not that responsive.
Look in the source-code of the AD1848 driver and look for the string Interrupt
Test Failed.
Just before it you see a loop with a loop count of 100000 where it tries to see
if the chip generates an interrupt.
If you increase the loop count to 900000 the problem seems to go away.
Just do a make modules and a make modules_install after you change the source.

Hope this helps.

So hde5 is the logical inside hde2????

try booting NT from LILO from hde2

Would you have supplied `fdisk -l /dev/hde` to start with, it may have
been solved sooner.
