Subject: Help me debug my cable-modem connection.
Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 12:10:47 GMT
Greetings,
I'm able to get my cable modem up and running. It's a 3COM HomeConnect
attached to a SMC Ether EZ card. On a P133 system. My cablemodem service
is
Cablevision's optonline service.
I have even been able to get it to then split the connection between my
machine and my wife's
machine.
My problem is sometimes when I'm downloading a file or borwsing
my connection seems to drop. I can't ping out from any of the clients
or even
from the main connection machine. What I have to do at this point is
restart the modem
manually, then bring down and up the eth0 to regain my connection.
I've had cablevision tech's come out and they've checked the signal and
with their own
notebooks were able to connect and even get better speeds than I've
seen.
Although they couldn't do any testing under linux because they aren't
familiar.
One claim they made was that since my connection box was a 133 I needed
a faster connection.
So can anyone tell me what tweaks to make or what specific how-to's to
read. Since I haven't seen
anything on dropped connections?
Thanks much,
Mark A. X. Andal

First in Linux, there is a software clock, you can set it with date.
Second there is the RTC in the CMOS of your PC.
If you now set the new time with
date MMDDHHMMYY
you only set the software clock.
this means in the time you reboot your PC these changes won't take
effect.
So afer you set the software clock, you have to set the RTC in your CMOs
with
clock -uw
But look at
man date
and
man clock
for timezone data.

Yep, did this. Now when I reboot and its says bringing up httpd, XFS etc etc it
also includes alsasound BUT when I do 'amixer' at the command prompt it says 'The
ALSA sound driver was not detected in this system'. SO it brings it up and then
says it aint there!!?? AARrggghh!
I altered conf.modules to look like:
alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-intel8x0
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
options snd snd_major=116 snd_cards_limit=1 snd_device_mode=0660
options snd-card-intel8x0 snd_index=0 snd_id=CARD_0
I copied this from another group where someguy says he was able to do lsmod and
get positive results, but he also included the following:
snd_device_gid=17 snd_device_uid=0
snd_pbk_frame_size=128
snd_cap_frame_size=128 snd_mic_frame_size=128
I have to comment out those lines but then I am back to square one again. Surely
there is SOMEONE who can go through step by step and say EXACTLY what to do. It
seems that quite a few people are having problems setting up these alsasound
drivers. I personally dont find the INSTALL instructiosn very easy to understand
and straightforward.

I have just installed Suse 7.0. And have encountered a strange problem....
I have an AHA-2940 scsi adapter. The pc bios recognizes 2 cd drives -
pioneer cd-rom and yamaha cd-writer 4416S.
The linux driver scsi aic7xxx finds the pioneer cd-rom but not the yamaha
cd-writer.
Can someone help ?

Marvin,
I've installed Mandrake 7.x (several versions) on Compaq Deskpros and had
good success. Not sure about the latest EN Ethernet cards, but maybe
it's time to "recruit" a test machine at work <evil grin>
Linux on my Thinkpad 600 has been a joy - not sure about IBM desktop machines.
Compaq, BTW, scores NO points in my book for "quiet". Their machines, in my
experience, tend to throw a large amount of noise pollution (the newer, the
worse. Go figure!)

There is no need for a boot partition bigger than some *megabytes*.
The minimum size is one cylinder on your hd and thats much more than
enough on a 40 GB hd.
The /boot-Partition only holds the kernel and some bootstuff. If you
want your linux essentially on one partition, add a one cylinder
/boot Partition and a big root partition to your Harddisk and let
redhat assign all other mountpoints to this big partition.

Does anyone know why this is happenning and how to stop this ?
Its really annoying to have to disconnect start a new app i might need while

I'm using Mandrake 7.0

As far as booting is concerned, that's OK. When you run LILO, it creates a
boot loader which, lacking any OS-level features such as filesystems or
-names, just knows where on the disk it should look for the kernel image
to load. If the kernel gets "physically" moved to another spot on the
disk (even when remaining in the same directory under the same name), LILO
must be told about it by running lilo.
All this is explained in great detail in the LILO documentation.

There are some dirty tricks though....
You probably are using the INC_MOD_USE_CNT to tell it is in use?
You can add an ioctl-call that calls DEC_MOD_USE_CNT
Now when an application crashed that uses this driver, and doesn't
unregister, you can force this. After the use count is back to 0
(lsmod), you can call rmmod again.
Probably there are some side-effects(memroy that isn't freed), but at
least you won't have to reboot each time.
I used this myself sometimes, cause I didn't like to reboot each time
either.

Subject: konsole cut/paste

Sorry if this is not the correct forum to post this question. Please
direct me to the correct one if it's not.
I'm used to running Solaris on a Sun box and keyboard, when I start a
terminal session (xterm) I can cut and paste using the appropriate
dedicated keys or keyboard shortcuts.
I have just started using linux (7.0) and when I start a session from
KDE (konsole) I can't seem to cut/paste in the term window.
Thanks for any help/tips.
Jack
