I assume you mean the ls command.
If so, check your .bash_profile or /etc/bashrc files; in one (or both)
you probably have an entry:
alias ls='ls --colour'
Get rid of it to get rid of the colours.
If you want to keep the colours but change their meanings, edit the
/etc/DIR_COLORS file.

Even though my SuSE documentation suggest NOT to put LILO in the MBR but
use the NT loader to load Linux I did overwrite the MBR on a machine with
NT anyway and it works. So now I have LILO in which I can choose NT and
the NT loader in which I can choose Linux (or go around in circles if I
whish).
I've had no problems using the NT loader it's just another loader. However
it is a bit more complicated to use since writing to NTFS is not so good
yet from Linux.
As for having LILO in the MBR I feel a little unsure about it because of
the warning in the documentation I have so I've not done this on my other
machines. I just wonder why the waring not the have the NT loader started
from LILO.
Good luck,
Kurt

So, why not add "root=/dev/sdb1" (or whatever the name of your root partition

boot dkc0 -flags "root=/dev/sdb1"

Don't know how to cd to this directory, but
# rmdir -- -
or
# rm -R -- -
will remove it.

Check the kernel configuration out. Must have dma support built in to
kernel. I'm not sure about debian but you may need to apply udma patch to
kernel as well. You recompile and boot to the new kernel. Re-read the
hdparm man help file for correct commands. Hope that helps a little.

Or you could edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethX and change
the line that says "ONBOOT=yes" to "ONBOOT=no".
Where "ifcfg-ethX" is the correct device for your eth card.

One way would be to use "netcfg" and edit the section "atboot" so that
it isn't activated at boot time.

Depending of what you mean by TCP/IP properties?!?!

rmdir -
works for me but I've used the wild-card characters to remove odd file
names. Check the directory that "-" is located in for other single
letter file names by doing
ls ?
If "-" is the only one file/directory that shows up then do
rmdir ?
If the directory is not empty then do
rm -r ?
That should clear things up.
(If there are other single character directories/files then move them to
another directory and move them back after you remove "-."

Hi all
I'm a newbie trying to install Linux. I have previously installed SuSE linux
without any problem.
But now I'm trying to install Caldera OpenLinux on the same PC (Previous
SuSE removed), but the installation can't seem to find the right resolution
mode to match my S3 Virge/GX2 card. For certain modes that somehow managed
to be displayed in the test mode, I get 2 screen side by side instead of
just one, and the display isn't perfect still. Pls help!!!
If not, can someone suggest which is the best Linux to be used as a web
server OS with minimal headaches?

I'm trying to salvage an older H-P NetServer LXPro, dual PPro
200Mhz, 256MB. It currently is an NT Server 4.0 box, trying to
make it a Linux server. It has two Adaptec AI7880 SCSI cards and
an array of five 4GB drives, which I assume are set up as a RAID
array, since NT works fine and Disk Administrator reports one
16GB drive in 4 partitions.
I had some initial problems with the CD-ROM drive during the RH
install, so I did an NFS install instead and that works fine up
until I get to the "Install Options" screen. When I try to
proceed, I get a dialog box with the text "An error has occurred
- no valid devices were found on which to create new filesystems.
Please check your hardware for the cause of this problem." When I
do a cat on /proc/scsi/scsi, I get:
Attached devices:
Host: scsi 0 Channel: 00 ID: 05 LUN: 00
Vendor: TOSHIBA Model: CD-ROM XM-5401TA Rev: 3115
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI Revision:
02
in /proc/scsi, there is also a directory called aic7xxx, in which
there are two entries, 0 and 1. If I cat these I see a lot of
SCSI stuff which means very little to me.
I suspect that this is a problem with Linux not seeing the SCSI
drives. I've seen posts listing this error message, but they all
seem to involve an ATA66. Any help greatly appreciated.

Well, I wouldn't know anything about their sound cards, but this
ethernet card seems to work OK on the basis of two minutes testing.
It's interesting that you say they can be flaky though. I've had some
mystery BSODs under NT in network intensive situations. What sort of
problems should I be looking for ?

Hmmm... The boot time hardware installation loaded the driver and
invoked network configuration.
I got exactly the result I happened to want by default.

I think that's what it is, though it's a long time since I ordered them,
there's nothing written on the card, and in these days of plug and play,
you generally don't need to know what something is before plugging it
into a modern PC.

Hmmm. The old card was an EISA. Does EISA come before or after PCI, or
is it more complex than that ?

I just let the hardware detection software install a driver and call
network configuration.
I gave it the machines ethernet address and it initialised the card at
eth0, saying that the initialisation of eth1 would be delayed which is
fine given that it needs reconfiguring before use anyway.

Hey just wondering, I did a man on ifconfig and mtu gives a small
definition.
How does one figure optimal mtu number?
After reading it i thought higher would be better.
