I found that if i specify the exact amount of ram in MB my system crashes in an
ugly way. I had
no problems when I used the KB figure the BIOS counted to. "mem=262144k"
worked for my 256mb.

hi, all
after upgrading from suse 6.4 to 7.1 i'm not able
to create/run crontab files as a regular user.
i have /etc/cron.allow, /var/spool/cronallow and
/var/spool/crondeny files, and i put the username
into /etc/cron.allow and /var/spool/cronallow.
still, whenever i run crontab -l i get the
following message:
you (username) are not allowed to use this program
(crontab).
contact your sysadmin to change
/var/spool/cronallow or /var/spool/crondeny.
i also tried using cron.allow and cron.deny under
/etc, /var, /var/spool and /var/spool/cron.
does anyone have any idea of how i can fix it?

Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2001 20:53:47 GMT
I have just completed installing rh7.0. When I try to "startx" it goes
along loading things and dies with the message:
Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting
The last message prior to the error is:
(II) TRIDENT: driver for Trident Chipsets: tva8900d,
cyber9320,cyber9388,
(more drivers listed)
cyberbladei7,
cyberbladei7d,cyberbladei1,cyberbladei1d
Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting
Can anyone explain how I can fix this error?
The monitor is a Tatung CM-14UHE
The video card is a trident VGA9000 w/ 512k memory
I had this same monitor and card working on rh v5.2
An unrelated question. How can I tell what other RPMs are needed, when
I load a particular package. I am trying to do this from a command line?
Please help

I'd run Xconfgurator again.. I've had problems with that card on a PC
I've got here... /var/log/X.log will tell you more about what it is
trying to do such as probing the card and looking for acceptable
resolutions...
As far as the RPMS go, when you try rpm -ivh thisfile.i386.rpm
it should say what is needed. Go to RPMfind and look for those files as
part of another package. the developers web site will also have the
package requirements and usually they links to those packages...

If you did it by the book you should still have a vmlinuz-2.2.16-22 in
the /boot folder(atleast I have anyway). Make another entry in lilo.conf identicle to
the other
with the thing pointing to the 2.2.16-22 file instead and when you save
be sure to run lilo again...

I highly agree with Joshua about scrapping the raid0 for something better.
Backup and restore is the best way.... Think about this -
Raid0 - Striped array / no fault tolerance, one dies all data is gone...
Raid 1 - Mirrored and Duplexed array (high overhead for ECC, simple to
recover from, doubles the read trans rate but only writes at normal disk
speeds)
Raid 4 - Independent Disks with shared parity Disk. (High read
speeds, Low ECC overhead, Complex design, Worst Write trans rate,
Difficult to rebuild)
Raid 5 - Independant Data Disks with distributed parity blocks (Highest
Read trans rate, Medium Write rate, Low ECC overhead, Difficult to rebuild
)
Source of all that came from
http://www.acnc.com/raid.html
My question for Joshua ;)
I've only used raid 1 and 5 software on my linux stuff and the howto I've
got only goes into recovering the 1 or 5 failure. Is it safe for me to
assume that since the raid0 is dependent on all drives (Striped with no
parity)that using raidhotadd won't work with the raid0 config?
Just curious since at some point I'll probably have to explain that to
someone around here who thinks they know something ;)

Lance,
I feel your pain... I am currently experimenting with getting my
Geforece2 to run my games under WINE. The card runs great despite the
development drivers. Although WINE usually crashes with griping about my
OPENGL drivers not existing... I haven't looked into it yet but I used
the codeweavers RPMS to install it and I bet if I compiled it myself I'd
probably be in business :)
Moral of the story.. If openGL isn't compiled in it won't work... make
sure your card supports opengl and the WINE you get has that option...
The other options is to wait for the game to be ported...
www.lokigames.com has been good about this... If you already have the
game you can get the Linux Point release and it should work with your CD.
If you get the Linux CD from Loki, you can use it with the Windows point
realease and run it under windows. However, as loki says, if you buy the
windows versions and get the linux point releases, then linux porting of
these games will die. SO, if we want this to continue, and loki keeps up
the work, it might be worth it to buy the loki version and if you think
windows might work better get the windows point release..
If you're really dedicated to Linux you might give that a try.. I
imagine when nothing runs on 98SE I'll be going that route, I've had it
with M$ :)
*off to try the linux Point release I got :) *

Carlton, which version of Open Linux is it? I've installed Open Linux

I don't know the answer to your question directly, but that additional

Subject: 2.2.16 => 2.4.2 wrong root filesystem
Date: 30 Mar 2001 22:17:36 GMT
Hi,
I currently have a strange problem while trying to upgrade from
Kernel 2.2.16 to Kernel 2.4.2 (I already found several postings
reporting similar problems, but I found nothing that helped...)
I use the Windows NT boot loader to select various systems,
i.e. I have a boot sector for every system which is then
loaded and executed by the Windows NT boot loader.
Kernel 2.2.16 boots with no problems. Kernel 2.4.2 also
boots, but the root filesystem it mounts is not valid;
I get the root password prompt for maintenance mode, so I
log in and do an ls and ... see the contents of a file
system which contains files and directories from the
file system which was there before I re-installed the system
some days ago.
I dont think that the layout of the ext2 fs has changed from
2.2 to 2.4, has it? That would be the only explanation I have
for this effect, e.g. reading superblocks on different blocks
or something similar...
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance,
Andreas

And that's exactly what works. The instructions for several things in
the Personal edition of 7.0 are incomplete or misleading. (Try following
the instructions for setting up a TV card if you don't have WinTV card.
You'll never get it working).
I bought the Pro version of 7.1 and it's interesting to see how much
more accurate the information is in the manuals for Pro.

Addition to my post to newsgroup..
I just followed loki's instructions on quake3 Arena... IT ROCKS!!!!!
My Setup
Nvidia Getforce2 GTS 32 MB
1 GHZ athlon
2.4.2 Kernel...
SBLive..
USB optical trackball
Consistent 70-90FPS @ 1024X768X32bit color
And I thought I was going to have to suffer losing my games in Linux!
Now if I can get the rest of my games to work I can format my HDD and

AFAIK, if *any* of the disks in a raid0 dies, the entire array (as an
entity) is gone. It *may* be possible, via some low-level tools, to
get data off of the surviving drives. But there'll be no recovery
of the array itself.

Hi all,
I have a system running RedHat 7.0. It's set up with boot RAID (RAID 1 for
/boot and /). My disk 0 just died and I'm trying to figure out how to
recover from it. I've installed a new disk and booted with the RedHat CD
and entered rescue mode, however I'm unable to locate any hard drives. /dev
doesn't show any drives whatsoever. The system has an Adaptec controller
and it looked like the AICxxx driver loaded when linux was booting up.
Unfortunately I never created my own rescue disk either.... What do I need
to do to recover from this mini disaster? Any help would be greatly

Printing to a jetdirect connected printer is a peice of cake as long as
you are using TCP/IP. In my experience I've found that it doesn't seem
to matter what you call the queue on the Jetdirect box, although raw and
text are the "official" ones.
However, there _are_ times when printing via a _Windows_ share can be
useful. For example, on my Win2K box, I share out my Brother HL-1040
attached to a Jetdirect 300EX because I've run Linux distros that don't
allow you to use print filters with remote printers but do allow you to
use them with Windows shared printers via Samba. So I just printed to
the share off my Win2K box that pointed to the Brother on the Jetdirect
box.
I don't understand why some distros let you use filters with remote
printers and others don't.
