Is disk 0 still plugged in? If so, it could be making the rest of the
scsi devices not be found. You can look in /proc to see what devices
were found on the scsi bus.

Subject: Why won't RH7 boot with L1/L2 cache enabled?
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Jim Reynolds)
Date: Sat, 31 Mar 2001 01:22:15 GMT

I just installed Redhat 7.0 on my old P-166 but it hangs in the very early
stages of booting (loading linux or uncompressing kernal).

I discovered that disabling the internal and external caches in the BIOS
solves this problem, but I'm not sure why. Obviously I'd like to have
caching enabled and I haven't found any other workarounds.

I suspect it's a problem with lilo's configuration or some other
initialization not happening, but that's just a guess. Can someone shed
some light here? FWIW, Mandrake 7.2 worked fine on the same partitions
(but it wasn't using lilo).

Thanks.

Jim.

I took disk 0 out, leaving just disk 1 attached (the second of the two
mirrored drives). When I tried to boot it I just got about 1 1/2 lines of
garbage on the screen.... So I can't even access /proc or anything else.

Subject: Dual boot win2000/linux - 1024 matters
Date: Sat, 31 Mar 2001 12:17:33 +1000

Some thoughts from the trenches.
Newbie, so I had some problems - thanks are due to all and any that helped,
especially Eric on this issue.
My contribution on all this - SIZE DOES COUNT.
Configuration:
Toshiba 4600 laptop, came as 4Gig Win200, rest of 20Gig (well 18.5 actually)
unformatted. Added a 2 Gig VFAT shared drive, and the rest to Linux except
for 512Meg Linux swap.
RH 7 (plus patches), so LILO is supposed not to have an issue with drives
bigger than 1024 - however, debate continues to rage.
With this config I was unable to get Linux to boot using the Win2000 loader.
Boot from floppy is fine, but isn't what I brought the machine for. Don't
know the layout of the disk (sectors, tracks), but decided that I must be
having an issue with the Linux partition being beyond the 1024 cylinder
limit.
Using partition commander (latest version knows all the formats, and is half
the price of Partition magic here in Aus), I reduced the shared partition by
a gig, and moved the Linux partition down.
Just for interest tried a boot of Linux from the hard disk. Got "LI " and
nothing else. Starting to look promising.
Ran a /sbin/lilo again and DD the boot sector across again.
Lo and behold, it all came up as desired.
I have seen a recommendation that your Linux boot shouldn't be any further
than 8 Gig from the start of the disk. With bigger disks and different
formats coming all the time, this will need some more thought. 6 Gig was too
big for me, but 5 was o.k.

there are a few variables you need to take into effect here:
1) what kind of modem do you have?
2) do you use pppoe, pppoa, or static routing?
3) what version of rp-pppoe do you run?

here's a bit more detail, and how i've gotten several people running, even
though we don't technically support linux at all

1) modem: you need to know your dsl modem's internal IP, if it has one at
all. this is important if you run a pier-to-pier network(well, it was for
myself at home, and for a few others i've spoken to, but not everyone, you
know, YMMV)
2) is you are using pppoe, then read on. if not, i can't help you, cause
that's all i know how to do
3) if you are using rp-pppoe, then read on. first and foremost, make sure
you installed the pppoe daemon. next, if you are using the version that
came installed with 7.2, then stop. run: rpm -e rp-pppoe .get rid of that
shitty version. then, go to www.roaringpenguin.com and get the most recent
version of the rpm, but DO NOT install it yet. now, run netconf, and get
rid of the IP and all the info for your nic, but don't worry, we'll put it
back in a minute. run "ifconfig eth0 down" and then "ifconfig etho up" and
then "ifconfig". if your IP is still shown, you might just wanna go ahead
and reboot. anyway, make sure you have no active network connections. then
install the new rp-pppoe rpm. run adsl-setup, and then try to connect.
after that, put your IP back in and it should work. anyway, this is not
guaranteed, but i've gotten a LOT of people up with this, myself included.

I am implementing undelete testing according to ext2 undelete howto.
But it seems that the testing fails, here are the steps I took:

1) echo > "testing" > /boot/testing
2) rm /boot/testing
3) umount /boot (do it immediately after removing file)
4) debugfs /dev/hda7
debug: lsdel
1 deleted inodes found.
Inode Owner Mode Size Blocks Time deleted
    25 0 100644 5 1/ 1 Fri Mar 30 19:37:53 2001

debug: dump <25> /root/testing.dump

But finally I find that the content of the file testing.dump does not
contain any "testing"
This situation continues after I tried again many times.

Is your card detected automatically or do you have to insert it? When i go
to "insert module" and "network card" it asks for a Modules Disk, assuming
that none are present on the boot disk. I tried the boot again, but the
tulip driver is seen only by 6.4 bootdisk. Would i be able to use the 6.4
disk to do a 7.1 installation?
Appreciate your help

I haven't worked with Raid on Linux, but have on Solaris so my view
may be a bit off, but...

If the Raid-0 is striped, and one disk goes bad you will loose
1/<number of disks> 'pieces' of data (the size of the piece depends on
the stripe width. In other words every 1/n chunks will be missing.
In a text file you may be able to fill in the missing words, but in
anything else ???! If the Raid-0 is a concatenated raid (yes also
known as raid-0 with Veritas Volume Manager, if a disk goes bad then
from that 'cylinder' of the virtual disk to the first 'cylinder' that
is on the next disk will be missing - lots of clusters.

A bad disk on a striped set would be likened to a radial scratch on a
disk. A bad disk on a concatenated set is more like a few (many)
cylinders (tracks) missing on a disk.
