You can't just copy the rpms to the hard drive and expect to install
linux. That would be like building a car with out the frame. If you want
to install from HD then copy the contents of the CD to the HD and try it
again.

linux. That would be like building a car with out the frame. If you want
to install from HD then copy the contents of the CD to the HD and try it
again.

If you want to make a directory to place the files in then just make a
/home/Mandrake directory then when you get to the section where you tell
the installation where the files are you would enter /home/Mandrake

chkconfig is intended for the scripts in /etc/rc.d/init.d.

To get your ftp server going, open /etc/inetd.conf in your favorite
editor and un-comment the line that looks something like this by
removing the ` # ':

# ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.ftpd

Save the file, then run the command "killall -HUP inetd". ftpd (via inetd)
should then be listening. To verify, use the command "netstat -ap".

You've got "traceroute" and "ping" mixed up. The best tool for
resolving ip's from domain names is "nslookup".

Thanks for the help.

I installed the wu-ftp rmp package and then it seemed to start working. Now
that I did that when I use chkconfig I can turn off and on ftp. I have
searched my whole file system and I do not have a file named inetd.conf. I
used the following command to search:

find / -name inetd.conf -print

I am just assuming this is due to differences between Red Hat Linux 7 and
what ever version you are using. Is this correct or is there some other
reason I do not have this file?

Subject: Serial terminal help
Date: Sun, 05 Nov 2000 00:23:38 GMT

Hey all, need some help getting a Digital VT420 terminal working off my
linux box.

I'm running RH 6.1 on a dual-processor 200ppro Compaq Proliant with 384MB
RAM and kernel
2.2.12-20smp

Terminal is connected and responds to keypresses. /etc/issue gets displayed
when I press
"return", and I get prompted to enter username like so:
 king.deshazer.home!login:

After entering my username and pressing "return", nothing! I never get
prompted to enter
a password! Continuing to press return or type anything gets echoed on the
screen, but
no response from the server

I've seen a couple people with this problem on deja.com, but no one ever
answers.
Damnit, someone answer me! :)

Heres some hopefully useful information:

Relevant line from /etc/inittab:
 7:2345:respawn:/usr/local/sbin/mgetty -s 19200 -r vt420

vt420 is symlink to /dev/ttyQ1a6, which is a port on an Equinox 16-port
serial board.
5 other devices on this board are working perfectly (no other terminals,
though, just
input/output devices like an LED sign, weather station, X10 controller, ...)

Mgetty is running, as ps ax shows:
 26935 ? S 0:00 /usr/local/sbin/mgetty -s 19200 -r vt420

I have restarted init ("init q") and killed and restarted the mgetty process
several times.

ps for "login" shows:
  1009 ? S 0:00 bash -login /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions//Default
 26939 pts/1 S 0:00 grep login

After entering username on terminal:
 Gettys
   977 tty1 S 0:00 /sbin/mingetty tty1
   978 tty2 S 0:00 /sbin/mingetty tty2
   979 tty3 S 0:00 /sbin/mingetty tty3
   980 tty4 S 0:00 /sbin/mingetty tty4

   982 tty6 S 0:00 /sbin/mingetty tty6
 logins
  1009 ? S 0:00 bash -login /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions//Default
 26935 ? S 0:00 login

Yeah, I see the warning, but as I'm communicating just fine, I'm blissfully
ignoring it as irrelevant. Am I wrong?

Replacing /bin/login with this wrapper script:
 #!/bin/sh
 exec strace -o /tmp/trace /bin/login.2

and renaming login to login.2 gives a trace file that has:
 ioctl(0, TCGETS, {B19200 opost isig icanon echo ...}) = 0
 brk(0x8050000) = 0x8050000

 ioctl(0, TCGETS, {B19200 opost isig icanon echo ...}) = 0
 chown("/dev/ttyQ1a6", 0, 0) = 0
 chmod("/dev/ttyQ1a6", 0622) = 0

ERESTARTSYS
  (To be restarted)
--- SIGTTOU (Stopped (tty output)) ---
--- SIGTTOU (Stopped (tty output)) ---

and the rest of the file just repeats:
 ioctl(0, SNDCTL_TMR_CONTINUE, {B19200 opost isig icanon echo ...}) = ?
ERESTARTSYS
  (To be restarted)
--- SIGTTOU (Stopped (tty output)) ---
--- SIGTTOU (Stopped (tty output)) ---

ERESTARTSYS
  (To be restarted)
--- SIGTTOU (Stopped (tty output)) ---
--- SIGTTOU (Stopped (tty output)) ---

on and on and on and...

I don't really know what I'm looking at here. I did it because someone
on deja suggested it to antoher person who was having the problem. Unf.,
there was no further followup on the thread.

If I don't touch the terminal keyboard, it eventually "times out", the login
process goes
away and the mgetty process comes back. Pressing ""return" starts the whole
process all
over again.

If I don't enter a login name, I get a warning message after 4 minutes that
I need to log
in, and after another minute I get a message saying that my login time
expired or something
like that.

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks,

Brent

Otherwise i can just pick Win98 just as normal... I really want to

You need to copy the new System.map from /usr/src/linux or whatever your
real path is where you built the new version, to /boot/System.map-2.2.17
or whatever. Delete the symbolic link to the the System.map in /boot and
make a new one pointing to the latest System.map.

You probably didn't compile in ppp. Take another look at "make xconfig",
loading in the ".config" that you used to build from.

The service I am referring to is not required by anything. I don't need
to know whether it would have failed either, since it fails anyway, due
to the timeout described in the initial posting.

.deb files are simple archives, i.e. you can unpack them with 'ar x'
(best do it in an empty directory, so that you don't have to search
the pieces afterwards)

there also is an 'alien' utility that lets you convert between
different package formats.

V,

Remember though that if your SiS AGP card is an on-board card that uses
shared memory that you will need to take this into consideration when
using the append directive.

e.g. I have 384M of memory, but 8M of that is shared by my SiS card, and
so I have 376M to use for the rest of the system, so I put
append="mem=376M". Failing to do this will mean that your system won't
boot.
