I have a sun workstation ( no floppy drive ) that I am using an ISO'd CD
to boot/install rh6.2. I can't seem to format the drives from the setup
routine. I was wondering if there is a way to get to an interactive shell
from the boot prompt... some place where i can perhaps run fdisk, and
manually format the partitions ( somewhere where i can see shell and
format error messages that aren't shown by the friendly setup installer )

thanks.

I have two hard disks : hard disk one (15G) has three OS Win NT 4 WS,
Win98, Win2k pro. I use Powerquest Boot Magic to boot them.

I installed Red Hat Linux 7 (Workstation mode) in the logical partitions
(Ext2 and Swap) in hard disk two (20G).

BootMagic was disabled by RedHat's boot menu. After I enabled BootMagic
again, I could not boot Red Hat directly by adding the menu item RedHat
(disk2, partition1) in Boot Magic menu.

But I can boot with the Red Hat Linux Boot floppy.

anyone know how to add Red Hat Linux 7 to Powerquest BootMagic menu?

Hi,
My X (XFree86 ver 3.3.6/Mandrake 7.0) appears slighlty to the right
and I'd rather make it 0.5 " higher.
As this is a dual boot PC, and the Windows appears right on my monitor
(Samsung 753DF, 17") I'd rather modify X within Linux without touching
my monitor.
I managed to set it right using xvidtune, however these setting were
lost once I rebooted.

Any suggestions?

i am not an 100% but i believe that RH7 uses xinetd to control such
services as ftp, telnet etc. there is no longer a inetd.conf file to
configure.
the services are linked somehow to xinetd and are lauched on request to
the port.
man xinetd should provide more info

Look at Rich's reply to my original question.

He suggested trying the generic vga X server but I've not yet had
the time to try it on my system. It's a good idea because it's a
sort of "lowest common denominator" that _should_ get X running on
almost any hardware.

Date: Sun, 05 Nov 2000 05:09:43 GMT

I have my 6GB HD partition into a 2.5 MB Windows and a 3.5 Linux-Mandrake 7.1.

Recently, I cannot boot into Linux (boot to Windows just fine). It says that it cannot
mount VFS and stops.

So, I download LM7.2 to upgrade 7.1. But diskdrake says it cannot see the partitions of
ANYTHING!! Not even the Windows partition.

So what do I do?? I don't want to lose the Windows on the disk.

If it comes to it, I don't mind re-installing Linux.

I have exceeded the capabilities of my current network (Win flavored peer to
peer). From what I have read and heard, Linux is the way to go.

My Specific Network Requirements:

** Must Have **
-server connected to Internet via cable modem
-server has firewall
-server has filter (XXX sites, etc.)
-server shares Internet to multiple Win flavored clients
-Win flavored clients must connect to VPN via the server/Internet(most
important item)

** Nice to have **
-remote control of server from inside and outside the firewall
-remote control of Win flavored clients behind the firewall
-forbid one or more of the Win flavored clients access to Internet

Comments and suggestions greatly appreciated. I saw a RH 6.1 bundled with a
RH Linux Bible in the bookstore for $35. Is that a good place to start?

Thank you in advance,

Having never done it, can I setup my Linux box to all my Windoze

Seems that this should work but I don't have a clue how to set it all

Can anyone tell me a) will this work? b) where do I find the details

I have, what I think would be a pretty reasonable request, but can't
seem to find a good answer to it. My kickstart is working great, but
not as I would like. I specify:

zerombr yes
cleanpart --linux
part / --size 1600
part /alt --size 1600
part swap --size 512
part /backup --size 3000
part /tmp --size 500
part /home --size 800
part /var --size 1 --grow

PROBLEM #1.
BUT IT DOES NOT create the filesystems in the order I list them.
It, in its infinite wisdom, creates them in order of size, except for
the
/var partition, which it does create last. I assume since it has to
"grow" it to fill the remaining disk size.

I DON'T LIKE THIS.
This means that / is /dev/hda6 !!! WHAT CRAZINESS IS THIS!?
/backup is hda1
/alt is hda5
/ is hda6

I would like htem created in the order I have listed.
It just simplifies things.

PROBLEM #2.
And why can't it do it a little smarter (it is the ONLY OS on the disk)
and use hda1 for /, hda2 for /alt, hda3 for swap, hda4 is extended,
/backup is on hda5, etc....

PROBLEM #3

rootps --iscrypted abc123....

does not work, well it kind of does. buy it sets the password in
/etc/passwd
rather than in /etc/shadow like it shoud. I do specify

auth --useshadow --enablemd5
before I have the rootpw line!

Bill
