You need to use "ipmasqadm" to do port forwarding.

Help with 7.1 GUI bootup.

I've just loaded Mandrake 7.1 and I somehow didn't get the GUI to come up on
bootup. How do I reconfigure it so that I can get either KDE or Gnome up and
up on bootup???

Thanks in advance.

Open /etc/inittab in you editor of choice, and change the default run level
level in this string:

id:3:initdefault:

to

id:5:initdefault:

That is purely an example specific to Red Hat Linux. You will need to
substitute Mandrake's X11 run level number for :5:.

No need to re-boot to bring the machine up in GUI mode either. Just run
"init 1", (or whatever single user mode # is on Mandrake) login, and type
exit. The machine will then come up and start X.

Why don't you use the 2.4.0test10-kernel? According to Linus Torvalds it is
pretty stable and without greater bugs (showstopper). I'm just working on
it!

What is the mount command to mount the sony digital memory sticks
(sony camera's) on to a pcmcia adaptor?

and has anyone ever used the USB port to access a digital camera
(Sony 505 cybershot) memory using Linux?

thanks,

Did you create the boot diskette? That is one way.
BUT an easier (though clumsy way - it works) is to
boot as if you were installing from the CD (or diskette)
and NOT re-install - say you are doing an UPDATE.
You will still load 117 packages (manditory code) but
eventually you can respecify your lilo info.

OK its just as well no one responded. Literally 5 seconds after posting
this I did 'lilo -v' and hey presto it all worked. But I stil ldont know
why the system crashed like that and I had to rerun that lilo -v thing. And
people say LINUX is stable .. yeah right (ok lets wait for it)

How are you doing for disk space? Especially root? Linux gets flaky when it
runs out of disk space in root. I doubt if this is the problem, but you might
take a look.

Also, are you sure you ran lilo -v the last time you DID build the 2.2.17
kernel? And when you did you had the correct System.map in place?

Check your /etc/man.config. It should look something like this, minus my
directory customizations. Also, check the /usr/man, etc. directories to make
sure you haven't wiped them out:

#
# Generated automatically from man.conf.in by the
# configure script.
#
# man.conf
#
# This file is read by man to configure the default manpath (also used
# when MANPATH contains an empty substring), to find out where the cat
# pages corresponding to given man pages should be stored,
# and to map each PATH element to a manpath element.
# It may also record the pathname of the man binary. [This is unused.]
# The format is:
#
# MANBIN pathname
# MANPATH manpath_element [corresponding_catdir]
# MANPATH_MAP path_element manpath_element
#
# If no catdir is given, it is assumed to be equal to the mandir
# (so that this dir has both man1 etc. and cat1 etc. subdirs).
# This is the traditional Unix setup.
# Certain versions of the FSSTND recommend putting formatted versions
# of /usr/foopath/man/manx/page.x into /var/catman/foopath/catx/page.x.
# The keyword FSSTND will cause this behaviour.
# Certain versions of the FHS recommend putting formatted versions of
# /usr/foopath/share/man/[locale/]manx/page.x into
# /var/cache/man/foopath/[locale/]catx/page.x.
# The keyword FHS will cause this behaviour (and overrides FSSTND).
# Explicitly given catdirs override.

I think I wasn't being clear: what I need to do is set the machine up so
that it thinks it has a valid IP address, even when it's not actually
attached to the net!

Hi Blacky,

I was thinking about some intelligent clean-up utility. You are not
going to tell me that I will have to live with all those files
cluttering my hard disk, don't you? I feel like drowning ...

Cheers,
Wouter

Subject: Help needed spec'ing Linux server
Date: Wed, 08 Nov 2000 23:02:47 GMT

If there is a better place to post this, please advise.

I need some help setting up a light weight server for my school. We
want a Linux machine to provide firewall, mail, and file serving. Our
needs are rather basic as you can see for yourself if you read the
background below. If you are not interested, skip to the questions at
the bottom.

Background:
==
Currently we have an old Pentium 100. 64mb ram, 4 gb scsi hd, Novell
4.x server. It serves as a file and mail server. We have about 20 Win
NT , and another 20 Win 98 clients that connect to it. Generally only
50% or less of these clients are in use at any one time.

We also have a Flowpoint 2200 router plugged directly into our central
hub for dsl service.

This system actually meets our need... almost. Occasionally it gets
bogged down when more than a few people start to access files, or
there is a big mail load. The real problem we have is support. No one
here knows Novell. When things go wrong its a nightmare to get it
going again.

New system
==
+Needs to cost <$1500us.
+Needs to be stable. Our Novell server gets rebooted about once a
year.
+Firewall, mail and file serving

I am planning on plugging the dsl router directly into the Linux
server. Then the Linux server will get connected to the central hub.

Details:
Red Hat 6.2 (just because I have used RH before)
-ipchains as a firewall
-Samba for file serving to the Win boxes
-mail server - no details for this yet

Hardware:
MSI motherboard
-MSI MS-6340 (K7T Master if we go scsi)
Duron 700
256 mb ram
ide(IBM) or scsi(?) HDs
2 Linksys nics

Questions:
==

1) scsi or ide. Seems like our needs are so basic that scsi is
overkill. I know the advantages of scsi in general, but are there
advantages for the serving environment that make it more valuable? IDE
saves money. If you recommend scsi, what brand or models?

2) Hardware (other than HDs). Any serious mistakes, or obviously
better picks to make?
-CPU: I like AMD a lot, so its going to be hard to convince me not to
go AMD. The Pentium 100 is enough of a cpu for the current system, so
I can't imagine the Duron will be working much at all.
-Motherboard: I picked MSI because they seem to have a good reputation
for stable boards.

3) General advice. Being the only technical person at my school, I
don't have anyone to think with on this project. So I am looking for
some basic words of wisdom as far as this type of project is
concerned.

Thanks in advance
-Alex

Yes, true, but man lilo.conf and man lilo turned up nothing.

But to save disc space, Sorry.
