linux mandrake 7.0 sounds like a fine OS.
before i buy, i gotta few questions.
i run off an internet connection on my wife's computer who is using windows
(she wont part with windows... ever). my own puter has a winmodem, so i
can't sign onto the net with it. my question is, can i still share my
wife's windows internet connection via our network? can we even still share
files across our network if i have linux and she has windows?
lastly, does it come with bootdisks? i really do NOT want to attempt to
make a bootdisk with proper modules and whatnot. i'm still kinda stupid
when it comes to that kinda thing.
please reply via email if possible. i can be reached at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
thanks for your time,
ryan

Hi,
I have problems playing MP3's.
My soundblaster works fine, at least I can play normal audio CD's.
But when I want to play MP3 files with X11amp of freeamp I get a lot of
noise, my speakers are about to explode !!!! And I can't seem to hear
any music through the noise.
Somebody with a solution ?

Hie there, got a big problem here....very sad.
Recently bought a Linksys network card for my pc. In its retail box, I was
instructed to download the source for the driver from
FTP://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/linux/drivers/tulip.c
FTP://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/linux/drivers/kern-2.3/kern_compat.h
1. I downloaded them and did what was instructed (compile tulip.c with
the required parameters and copied the binary to
/lib/modules/2.0.XX/net/tulip.o where the XX is the version number of the
latest kernel.
2. Update kernel's module dependencies:
/sbin/depmod -a
3. Next I edited /etc/conf.modules and added the following entries
alias eth0 tulip
options tulip options=0 debug=1
4. Restarted the system and then ran ifconfig. Sadly, I was only shown
the loopback devices.
5. I did "cat /proc/pci" and got the particular line which I thinks
refers to my ethernet card
Bus 0, device 18, function 0:
Ethernet controller: Unknown vendor Unknown device (rev 17).
Vendor id=1317. Device id=985.
Medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. IRQ 9. Master Capable.
Latency=32. Min Gnt=255.Max Lat=255.
I/O at 0x6000 [0x6001].
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xe4000000 [0xe4000000].
6. A "dmesg | grep eth0 -" refuse to turn up any eth0 entry
7. I also did "modprobe tulip.o" and I got this lines at the end of my
/var/log/messages file
"Jun 26 17:34:30 localhost kernel: elf_core_dump: file->f_pos (1148458) !=
offset (1146880) " which I have no idea if it has anything to do with my
running of "modprobe...."
Any idea :-( If you have any idea, do tell me, okie :-)
a million thanx there :-)

Umm... that's a very sweeping statement, how about backing it up?
I personally find the use of symlinks to devices very handy indeed; not
least of which because if you find yourself reconfiguring your system a bit
(moving a modem to a different serial port, your CD writer and scanner
change order on the SCSI bus, and so on) the only change you have to make is
redo a symbolic link!
What's wrong with doing that?

There are probably other solutions, but I'd try to get a boot/root disk
combination from slackware.com and boot a linux from there. Then mount
the partition where fstab is on and change the file. Although I don't
know why the RH rescue disc wont alllow you to mount the partitition rw.
That should work too. Or is that rescue disc juts a boot-disc? Well try
the Slackware solution
that should work. You might need to mount the partition with vi on it
too to be able to use that, just go ahead and try it.
Good luck,
Eric

Don't.
Install ssh on both machines, and use ssh -l root host.
This is way more secure.

Been there, done it. Used WinGate on MS-Glassware box, used iShare on
it, used SyGate, and then installed Masquerading on My Linux box and
since we live happily on internet and when Netscape crashes on any
machine the other continues without noticing.

Get normal modem preferably external so it can be exchanged between

Yes with a Slackware bootdisk, att the liloprompt.
mount root=/dev/hda6
then edit /etc/fstab, etc/lilo.conf
run lilo
mount windows partition mount /dev/hda1 /mnt
make new file dd if=/dev/hda6 of=/mnt/boot.lin bs=512 count=1

This sounds like a classic case of the Battle of the Buttons (tada!)
On a more serious note, this sounds to me like you have a three button
mouse with a sliding switch somewhere on the bottom of the mouse that
lets you choose between using 2 or 3 buttons. Either you have your mouse
set to use 2 buttons and GPM and X to use 3 buttons, or vice versa.

Disclaimer: I didn't make the original statement, but I do agree with
it !:-)
I have found massive problems using /dev/modem when I am using the
modem for more than one application. I have ended up just sticking to
/dev/ttyS? and that sorted out problems like locking and fax queues
going mental when the modem is being used to connect to the net.

I fully support the use of symlinks for things like scanners and
cdroms because they make life easier. Nice, consistent interface to
devices. But for modems, I stick to their /dev/ttyS port :-)

Install lilo on the first lilo partition. Then it is a simple matter
to make this linux partition active using DOS fdisk to get lilo back.
