Sorry, I don't understand you. You say that the files are used at
startup, yet you want to clean them up - either they're used or they're
not. :)
Besides, they're only dotfiles. ls won't display them by default, and I
imagine most file managers can be configured to hide them, so I never
regard too many of them as a problem.

Not being able to boot was nothing to do with Linux, then. Your boot
sector somehow managed to get corrupted in the crash, and you had to run
'lilo -v' to put it back.
As for the crashes - is there anything in /var/log/messages from just
before the crash? Or do you have any other signs of hardware problems
(like random segfaults when compiling things)? Your system shouldn't
just freeze for no reason. Sometimes X can be the culprit here too.

This is all bullshit!
If you use ONLY partition magic to do the partitioning you will
have no problem. I have partitioned a lot of hard disks and not
once I have ever had partition magic fuck up on my systems.
I had two problems related to partioning in the past couple of years
1- When Corel Linux got installed it blew my partition table and neither
OS/2 nor partiton magic were able to read, I don't remember the error
number, perhaps 104 or 105. It turned out that Corel seemed to have
written over a partition boundary. I did the hard fix, I booted from diskette
under SuSE and saved my dat onto another hard disk, I then proceeded
to recreate a dos partition table and reinstall OS/2 as well as SuSE Linux.
2-Win NT 4.0 was installed onto the first partition of around 2G on an
8G partition (1027 cylinders in LBA).
When running NT fdisk it put his mark which turned out that that mark was
the zapping of a 3G linux partition sitting on the end of the drive.
I wiped winblows NT and used the CD as a coaster.
The partition table was blown.
Please stop the nonsense about PM. It may not be a perfect software package
but by experience I found it to be one of the very best such software on
the market as it supports several operation systems. Unlike the fdisk of
Linux I don't have any weird surprises with OS/2 or DOS. I can do basically
what I want with PM.

Hi,
HELP! I am trying to upgrade a Red Hat 5.1 server
to Red Hat 7.0. And panic! No EATA driver for my
DPT Smart RAID IV controller. The install stops at
the screen where it wants to know my controller or F2
for a controller on floppy. It has everything listed but EATA.
Does anyone know how to cope with this? Is there
an EATA floppy out there? Or, did Red Hat just
decide to drop the EATA driver (I looked and it was still
in V 6.2).
If you are replying, I would sincerely appreciate you eMailing me
as well as replying to the newsgroups: my nntp server is aging
everything off in three days. (I have complained).
Many thanks,

Yeah, that's a major bummer too. I would sure like to be able to use a
device instead of an ip address. Something to this effect would be sweet:
ipmasqadm portfw -a -P tcp -L -i eth1 80 -R {web_server_ip} 80

Yeah, I know :-) I wish the same thing (apparently IPAUTOFW, which
preceded portfw but which was less stable, did allow that). But here's a
one-line script somebody sent me a while back:
MYIP=$(/sbin/ifconfig | /bin/grep P-t-P | /usr/bin/cut -c 21-35)

I m using Winlinux 2000
1. When i go and try to install some programs that I have on maximum linux
cd, it gives me an error that says something similiar to this: ......can
only be executed on local disk only. Whats that mean?
2. How do I set up my modem? (a total newbie question). I mean, when i
click on the dial up, it just shows me how to make a dial up, and stuff,
but where is the control panel or something that i can change my modem
setting?
3. Also xfree86 4.0, when i tried to install it, i believe i got the same
error message as it is in question 1.
4. How do i set up my sound card? (ok, here i go again, same reasons as
number 2)

I have a linux box setup and running. I would like to make a backup/copy
machine to use in case this one goes down. The backup machine has
similar but not identical hardware.
How can I make a backup/copy? Do I just use dd and copy the main
machine's HD to the backup? (What about the MBR?)

Xconfigurator will ask for your video card, if you go to the bottom of the list you
can select Unknown card (I think that is what it says) the program will then ask
for the server to use The servers all start with XF86_. Try the XF86_VGA or
XF86_SVGA as a starting point. Pick 640X480 8bit resolution to keep things simple.
It's called a server because it is the server of the graphics to your terminal.

I have checked it, everything in /etc/man.conf seems to be okay. The MANPATH settings
seems to be okay, and all the man files are there in the man path. I have not wiped
out anything.
But man is still not working.
What could go wrong? Is there some reason that /etc/man.config is not used by the
system?

Ok, I am a rookie at unix admin. I have my cable modem plugged into the
ethernet card in my mandrake 7.0 box. I can't get outside the box. A ping
result in a "Network unreachable" and obviously web and ftp are just out of
the question.
I used netconf and set it to use DHCP (eventhough it didn't ask for the ip
of the DHCP server), and I gave it dns server entries.
Question 1 is, how do I set this up correctly, and question 2 is, how do I
force it to renew or release an IP address?
direct email would be great

It probably was caused by something that needs to be run on a hard
disk, not a CD. The reason can be that the CD is mounted that way.
(what is mount, you ask. read Linux installation and configuration
guide. it's free online.)
You can try to fix the mount table (/etc/fstab) and maybe it will let
you execute a program on CD. Or, you can simply copy the file you want
to run to a temp directory in local hard disk and run it. usually
that is directory /tmp

not all modems will work in linux. If you got a crappy winmodem, then
you will go through hell. if you got a real modem, then it shouldn't
be hard.. most of the time that it will be automatically detected.
to know how to setup modem. read the following documentations, and
report back : go to linuxdoc.org and find the "HowTo"s. read the
following howto.
ISP-hookup howto
linmodem howto and winmodem-and-linux howto (only if you have a
winmodem)
modem howto
if things are not working after ISP-hookup howto, then read PPP howto,

again, to do that, you wanna know exactly what your soundcard is. Step
one is figure out exactly what sound card and what chipset you are
dealing with. Usually you can read the chipset on the physical card.
read sound howto may help. However, there are too many sound cards, so
the better way will be to do a search on google.com and deja.com on
your specific sound card and see if anyone got a solution.
if you got further questions, please make sure that you state clearly
what you don't understand, what you have read, and what you have done
