Subject: Linuxiso.org: How to create a bootable CD?
Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2000 15:39:11 GMT

Hi,

As I don't have a CD burner, I naively d'loaded the ISO image of RH 7
from www.linuxiso.org, and used EZ CD Creator to create a bootable CD
by following instructions at
http://www.linuxiso.org/ezcdcreator_viewlet.html
("Burn an iso image to cd with EZ CD Creator".)

Thing is, when prompted for a bootable floppy, I figured it would just
copy the MBR off of it, so I just picked a Win95 floppy... but it just
won't boot.

What should I use as bootable floppy?

Thx
FF.

Hmmmm.... This is purely a SWAG[0] and I haven't tried it,
but I think that if you set up all of the NT boxen & the
gateway on their network settings to where they're in the
same workgroup that they should appear there.

(in case you didn't already know, you can set the workgroup
for the Linux box in the /etc/smb.conf by adding the line
"workgroup = NAME OF WORKGROUP" under the [global]
settings.)

I only played briefly with Freesco on some *very* old
workstations at a NOLUG[1] meeting. I've yet to play with
it on a laptop.

btw, Mandrake 7.0 works great on my CTX laptop with an Intel
Pro 100 LAN/Modem PCMCIA. I'm pretty happy with it. The
attention Gnome attracts in airports is pretty wild. :)

It's not a wheel mouse. It has a 4th button that is meant to be used w/ the
trackball to scroll.

I need X to treat the y-axis as the z-axis (window scroll) when the 4th button
is pressed.

Good evening,

I have fdisk:ed and formatted a 500MB disk in Win98 DOS and boot up with

Linux on a floppy. I receive the answer "Partition Check:

That's it! How do I get the boot to carry on?

My problem is that I have a CDROM less laptop. The pcmcia card I have is not
supported by the normal network.img. I do have a limited Linux with a driver
for my pcmcia card 8390.o pcnet_cs.o .
So these steps are my attempt to build these drivers onto a floppy so I can
use the pcmcia for an FTP install.
On the floppy there is a file called initrd.img which I believe I will need
to pull apart, replace my 8390.o and to
put in the pcnet_cs.o into the /modules directory?
Am I on the right lines here??!!

I am pretty new to Linux, so please bear with me. I have Compaq Armada
M700 with an internal PCI ethernet card. When I look in
the /var/log/messages file, the eepro100.o seems to load but there is a
message stating that the PCI BIOS has not enabled this device. When
the OS attempts to start DHCP, a message gets logged stating that the
resource is temporarily unavailable.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Subject: CD-ROM problems when Installing Linux Mandrake
Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2000 21:30:03 -0000

Hi,

I am trying to install Linux Mandrake 7 on a old 75 mhz machine. I want to
goof around with it before I put it on my a newer machine.

The problem I am having with the installation is this: It pops up after it
reads the floppy, I hit enter to begin the loading. Once we are inside the
installation, it automatically begins trying to initialize the CD-ROM drive
but fails. Then it shuts everything down and says that it is now safe to
reboot my machine.

Can anyone tell me what in the world is going on? It seems there is not
much support on this particular issue inside the installation of Linux.

Thanks,

Thx, but does it mean that the only way is to perform a first install
on a stand-alone HD, then recompile a new kernel with that driver, and
move all partitions on the RAID drives?
There is no other drive besides the 3-HD RAID5 set, so installation
fails at the very beginning because Linux doesn't see any drive in the
host. Could it be possible to just add arguments to the boot line when
booting from the CD, and tell RH to look on the floppy for additional
modules?

Otherwise, I think I'd rather order Dell's customized RH 6.2...

Thx

Got a good laplink cable from stapes for $9.95 plus tax. I am now copying
files back and forth using nfs over plip.

Works GREAT. Cheap as all hell... but it has a few bumps I have yet to smooth
out.

1- Try as I may, I'm not able to mount the cdrom on the desktop from the
laptop, but mounting the cdrom on the laptop from the desktop works! Same
   version OS, just different hardware...

2- While I can read files/dirs on the other computer, I'm not yet able to
write there. it's not a problem as I can invoke a read from either computer
and get the backup work done... just fine.
But getting permissions set, where I'm allowed to write from one box to
the other has ELUDED me! How do you doit???

3- It's whay loads slower than a lan... but that the trade off for the cost
   savings.

Right now, I just plug in the laptop to desktop over the laplink cable, run a
script on the laptop to setup plip, ifconfig the port, make sure nfs and
portmapper... run the same script on the desktop and then cron takes over at
midnight and does either a complete backup or incremental backups of my laptop
to cdr... All the while I'm snoozing...

Ain't linux GRAND! ;')

Why are all these services not shutting down? Is my installation hosed?

Hi all,

I'm looking for the openssh package for SuSe 7.0. I can't find it on
ftp.suse.com/de.
I downloaded the rpm's from openssh.org but rpm refuses to install the
compiled binaries due to a incompatibility in the rpmlib.
So I downloaded the sources from openssh.org and start to compile them,
but to do so I need to install also tcp_wrapper ( I guess the sources ?)
and gnome_devl, which I would like to try to avoid.
tcpd is installed.

Is there any binary rpm for the openssh for Suse 7 ?

Any help appreciated,
