You should try an older version of Redhat, like 5.1. Or better yet get a new
distro. Try Debian!!! It rocks!

Subject: Upgrading to glibc 2.2.
Date: 08 Apr 2001 18:39:08 +0300
Hi!
I'm trying to upgrade my Linux system to glibc 2.2., but I have a
major problem. The base system is Redhat 6.2., which I've been
upgrading towards 7.0. gradually. I have rpm-4.0.2-6x and
glibc-2.1.3-22 currently in the system. On the way to glibc 2.2. I'm
first trying to upgrade to glibc-2.1.92-14, which is the standard
library in Redhat 7.0. However trying to install it gives
[jarmo@localhost incoming]$ rpm -i --test glibc-2.1.92-14.i686.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
glibc >= 2.1.92 conflicts with rpm-4.0.2-6x
glibc > 2.1.3 conflicts with db3-3.1.17-4.6x
So it seems that I should, at the same time, upgrade the rpm version
and install the new glibc. Lot's of programs on the machine are using
the older version of glibc, so I can not upgrade them both.
So my question is, how can I upgrade one package and install one
package at the same time when running rpm? No matter which way I've
tried to tackle the problem I always end up facing this question.
Thank you very much in advance.

Subject: Lilo 'smp'??
Date: Sun, 08 Apr 2001 17:55:23 +0200
Hi all!
I just installed Redhat 7.0 on an ordinary Dell Optiplex, nothing fancy
there. I set it up as a server with Apache, ftp etc, and two NIC's. The
installation went smoothly with no problems, but whenever I boot up the
computer I get a Lilo graphical boot-menu where the default choice is
the kernelname followed by the letters 'smp', the other choice is just
the kernelname.
What's the deal? What does 'smp' refer to? Have I done something wrong??
Any input apreciated!
TIA,
Orjan

Subject: Kernel 2.4.1 and StarOffice
Date: 8 Apr 2001 17:43:32 GMT
Has anyone had any problems with StarOffice and kernel 2.4.1,
specifically saving to a vfat partition?
I had things working ok, but then I upgraded to kernel 2.4.1 to get some
of its new features. However when I did that StarOffice then suddenly
started to refuse to save to my Windows 98 partition.
Everything else works fine. All other programs can save to my win98
partition, I can copy to/from, delete, etc. Only StarOffice has
problems. There are no console or kernel messages when the error occurs,
StarOffice just says:
Error writing file somefile.sdw
Write error.
Error writing file .
Really helpful. I can boot up with my previous kernel (2.2.13) and
StarOffice works fine, so I can't see it being a problem with any of the
tools I had to upgrade for kernel 2.4.1.
FYI I have my win98 partition and my root ext2 partition on one
harddrive with a slave drive just having ext2 partitions. I also have an
internal Zip drive with 16bit fat formatted disks. StarOffice refuses to
save to either the win98 partition or zip disks, yet has no problems
saving to any ext2 partitions.
Anyone any ideas? It's quite possible I may have misconfigured my new
kernel as I'm no expert, yet StarOffice is the only affected program I
can find.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: Mesa 3.0 libGLw on Caldera OpenLinux eDesktop 2.4
Date: Sun, 08 Apr 2001 17:56:15 GMT
If this message is in the wrong newsgroup please let me know and
disregards what follows.
Platform: P166 with 80MB RAM; OS: Caldera Openlinux eDesktop 2.4
Software: OpenGL and Mesa 3.0
I am trying to compile an OpenGL demo program call "gears" and the link
step indicated that
the library "libGLw" is missing in the /usr/X11R6/lib directory. This
demo program is part of the "vopengl" demo programs of the C C++ Gui
Framework by Bruce E. Wampler.
The other OpenGL libraries (libMesaGL, libMesaGLU and libglut) are
present. I found the sources files and header files with the "GLw "
prefix to compile them and create the libGLw library (both static and
shared). To build the static version of the library I simply compile the
files and used the command "ar ruv libGLw.a + the list of object
files" followed by the "ranlib libGLw.a" command. To build the shared
version, I compile using the -fpic option folowed by another
compilation with the option -shared. After creating the libraries I
copied them to the /usr/X11R6/lib directory, established the necessary
symbolic links, change owner, group and permission to be the same as the
other OpenGL libraries.
When I try to compile and link a demo OpenGL program called "gears", the
compilation steps goes well but at the linking step I get two messages:
undefined reference to "glwDrawingAreaWidgetClass"
undefined reference to "mesaDrawingAreaWidgetClass"
I checked the source code that I used to build libGLw and I see those
variables/class names (?)
so I presumed they are defined but in fact they are not.
I would like to have some indication why I get those messages. What did
I do wrong ? I do not know what to do next I tried many things but no
luck. To save me time and difficulty I would like know were I could find
binary version of "libGLw" in static and shared versions for Caldera
OpenLinux eDesktop 2.4. That library was not in my installation
originally. I went on Caldera System WEb site and was not able to find
it there either.
If the information above is not complete enough, I can send more but I
did not want to put a large amount of material on the newsgroup.
Any help on the above matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Subject: Gnome/Gtk Locale(?) Messed Up
Date: 8 Apr 2001 18:01:01 GMT
I think I have messed up my Gnome/Gtk locale settings or configuration
while upgrading some libraries as all Gtk-based apps on my system are
missing text from most places like menus, buttons, message boxes, etc.
Though Keyboard shortcuts still show on the menus. But it may be
something else. None of the apps give any error messages.
I upgraded my system to glib 2.2.2 and the text in all Gtk apps simply
vanished. They were working fine before (silly me).
Anyone know how to fix this? I just so happened to have a complete set
of gnome and gtk RPMs sitting in a directory and so tried reinstalling
them all, but that didn't fix it.
Thanks in advance.

The install usually hand-holds your way through most things - one
thing I would check though (because I've been caught out too LOL) is
that you are not only creating the partitions, but letting the
installation format them if it needs too.
Maybe newer versions of distros are more helpful but when I first
tried it I failed several times before I noticed I wasnt' formatting
partitions......
May not help you, but I thought I might suggest it

Subject: How copy/backup entire drive to another drive?
Date: Sun, 08 Apr 2001 16:24:03 GMT
Do you know the easiest way to copy the entire linux drive to another drive in
a way that preserves system integrity: permissions, directory trees, etc?
I need a complete copy of my linux system so I can wipe out the partition and
start over because of partition damage. In windows I know I can do something
like, "xcopy c:\*.* d:\backups /s" to accomplish this. No idea how to do it
in Linux.
I've tried using dump but I'm getting the commands wrong. Instead of copying
the files I get that menu of operators/instructions. I've also downloaded
every linux backup program found on linuxberg but they want to back up to tape
drives or make a mirror copy to a blank drive or have weird
instructions/requirements that I do not meet.
I've also tried cpio but it has a zillion command operators and I have no idea
which one(s) to use to do a complete drive backup (and yes I already bought
and read a Linux book [Que's "Using Linux"] but it seems outdated and very
limited as far as backing up is concerned).
Can you help?
Thanks!

Where is Linux on the drive? It probably has an older LILO, so /boot has
to be entirely below cyl 1024 (or / if you do not have separate /boot).
There is a newer LILO that can get around that limit, but to be on the
safe side I have not booted that far out on a drive yet.

Hi,
I'm trying to correct the clock drift in my system.
It drifts 32.5 seconds a day. I run ntpdate once
a day to correct this. I also edited the /etc/adjtime
file to set the drift correction to 32.5. This didn't
seem to have any affect... Is there something I need
to restart ? The clock faq infers that the kernel will
use this value to adjust the for the drift.

You don't say what kernel you are running, but I had similar problems
between a PnP modem and apparently non-PnP ES1869 soundcard, but this is
with a 2.4.0 kernel. I don't know if it makes any difference that I have
PnP support enabled in BIOS.
The sb module tended to load isa-pnp module, but I could not figure out
how to check or set modem irq (which appeared to be correct in boot
messages). isapnp.conf would fail saying the port was already in use
(/proc/ioports showed it as something like "serial (auto)".
If I compiled PNP support into the kernel, it would assign irq 5 to the
modem so my sound would not work. Attempting to set sound irq to 7 failed
(possible irq conflict or did not respond).
It finally worked using irq 3 for modem (ttyS3) and irq 5 for sound when I
recompiled the kernel without PNP support and without using any
isapnp.conf (maybe the BIOS did PnP automatically). If you use loadlin
maybe you need to do the same.

Assuming he is not running any servers - since he says he will be running
it from his desktop, he should activate the personal firewall. This can be
done during or after installation. It does a good job of stealthing the
system.
