Ack, no, do not set LINK to /dev/ttyS5. That will cause the serial
script to make a backup of the ttyS5 device (ttyS5.O) and then make
ttyS5 a link to the actual modem device.
The LINK field in the serial.opts script is the name of the link that
should be created when a PCMCIA modem is detected. It is not what you
want /dev/modem to be linked to.
Maybe you should say why you want to do this in the first place. What
hardware are we talking about here? Do you have a PCMCIA modem card?
Is there another modem (built-in)? Why do you want /dev/modem to
point to ttyS5? What problem are you trying to solve?

I've not used it heavily yet. It's only a heap of six old 2 gig drives,
but I guess they are more use in RAID five than a skip.

I don't remember now. Word in this news group seemed to be that it
could have its firmware upgraded for about 60 USD, probably plus postage
from the US, but I was impatient to play and I don't know if it's worth
it.
My guess is that you could pick up a modern 10 gig IDE disk for around
70 USD ?

Try pinging outside servers like yahoo.com etc. or
try pinging your isp ip. If yon can't ping most
likely is you need to configure yure network
interface. If you can ping ip but not domain like
yahoo then you have a problem with dns.

In lilo I remember it was as easy as
# edit lilo.conf
# lilo
# reboot
to readjust it. In grub, the man page nor the info pages are upfront
about what is the equivalent to lilo.conf. I surmise it is something like
/boot/grub/menu1st, [I could double check exact spelling
easier once my problems are fixed.]
OK, now what is the equivalent to
# lilo ?
You see the Mandrake 7.2 installation put "hdc=ide-scsi ide1=autotune
ide0=autotune"
into my grub startup sequence and I wish to take it out to avoid stalls,
and I don't want to go into the grub editor every time I reboot.
And sorry, DrakConf->BootDrake doesn't get rid of that line.

However, if I go into, say, xmixer and tweak the
main volume control the sound plays at the correct
volume for about two seconds then slowly fades
back to a barely audible level.

It's trivial under RedHat, I assume it's not difficult for other
distributions either.
All the information you need is on the installation copy of the service
(the yellow sheet). If you're running RedHat, as open linuxconf (as root)
>linuxconf
Under networking, you enter the following info.
1) IP address and net mask: Basic Host Info -> Adaptor 1. The net device
is eth0. You can also specify the driver for your ethernet card, but I
think it'll figure it out anyway.
2) gateway
3) DNS servers
If you're running another distribution you should figure out the name of
the network configuration utility.
This link and the hotwos help a lot.

Hi Jim,
I just started using Linux a few months ago...Red Hat 6.1. Installation
of
the basic operating system was straightforward and went smoothly, but I
have
had some trouble getting my peripherals to work (sound, zip - probably
due
to my "newbie" status). I've read that Corel Linux has a highly
user-friendly installation interface. CNet.com did a review of all the
major
Linux distributions earlier this year, and Corel got the highest marks
on
ease of installation. You might want to check that review out before you
make your decision. Also check out the hardware compatibility lists of
each
distribution and make sure that your hardware (esp. your video chipset)
is
compatible.
Good Luck,
Paul
