OK, I'll look up in my stack of books how to add this stuff. I know NIS is old
YP.
>Yep. That's it, if you don't. lpd needs tcp.
Good old comp-center mentality. What's the easiest way to check whether my
kernel has TCP/IP installed and enabled? ISTR that it does, but it's a long
time since I built it. And I'm on Slackware, so can't use all those great (?)
RH GUI utilities.
>char-major-WHAT?
Well, all that the bootup messages say is "missing module char-major." But I
gather this isn't relevant to lpr or TCP/IP?
>do filter < foo > /dev/lpr0 instead!
Well DUH on me! After 20 years of UNIX usage I should have checked whether
those filters were free-standing and could be piped by the user!
Thanks, Mike K.

Where is your CDROM attached? Master/slave on which IDE controller,
(assuming an IDE CDROM of course). The link to /dev/hdd assumes it is the
slave drive on the secondary controller. If this is not the case just delete
the symbolic link and create another one pointing to the correct device,
ln -s /dev//cdrom /dev/hdx
with x =
a if it is master on the primary IDE controller
b if it is slave " "
c if it is master on the secondary IDE controller

Hello Crystal,
First off is this a new, unformatted partition or is it a partition that was
already there but you don't know what filesystem type it is? If it is a
pre-existing partition you may want to try the mount command using the
different file system types available before you assume that it is empty.
You might want to consult your /etc/fstab file first. If it is an empty,
unformatted partition then blast away!

Possibly. It helps to have the same kernel version and the .config

Hi:
When I install my RH7.0 , I always no make boot disk.
I have sucessfully rescued my computer more times.
My method is :
(1)use RH7.0#1 to boot and select "linux rescue" mode.
(2)if you see prompt # , you can type
#mount /dev/hdax /mydisk ----- x is your "/" partition, if you forget the
partition number, you can start from 1 to try it.
(3)if you mount ok . ---- you can use "ls" & "pico" to check file content
is correct.
#cd /mydisk/etc
#pico lilo.conf ----- you can check content or modify it,
#../sbin/lilo -r /mydisk ---- you can run lilo. if some error , you can
"pico lilo.conf" again.
I have no window-me, only win98, you can try it.

I'm trying to install Debian potato on a new system.
All is fine until it gets to the point of installing the base system (base2_2.tgz)
Then it fails with the following error:
"File error!
There was a problem extracting the Base System from
/instmnt/dists/potato/main/disks-i386/current/base2_2.tgz"
On console 4 (Alt-F4) I see the following:
repeated error of
"<4>hdc: cdrom_decode_status: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
<4>hdc: cdrom_decode_status: error=0x30"
followed by
"<4>hdc: ATAPI reset complete"
ending with
"<4>end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 1013544 <-- this number changes
<4>end_request: buffer-list destroyed
<4>hdc: cdrom_decode_status: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekCompl"
Does anyone have any ideas?
Many thanks in advance.

I have a SIS630 motherboard which has all onboard cards. The LAN card
is an SiS900. I am installing Redhat 7.0.
Doing an lspci -vv I see the card at IRQ 11 and IO de00. I also see
some communications port on IRQ 11.
When I cat /proc/interrupts there is no entry for IRQ 11.
I added the following in my modules.conf
alias eth0 sis900
options sis900 io=de00 irq=11
When I boot I get an insmod failure trying to load the module.
modprobe fails also, but it says it doesn't know parm_io.
I have recompiled the kernel to rebuild the sis900.o to ensure I have
the latest version, but to no avail. So what do I try next?
Thanks in advance,

FYI
I had the same problem with Optimum. If the modem link dropped for
any reason (a problem I've had), I would have to re-run pump manually
to reset the connection. If I let it sit it could take up to an hour
or (much) more to reset automatically. Eventually (recently) I bought=20=
SMC Barricade for use as a firewall/router/switch which seems to work=20=
without any problems, even when I have dropouts. The RH behavior was
very strange.

Hi..
thanks for the reply...a little more exploration both off an on our network
has yielded some more information.
No DNS is involved...attach to the ftp server directly via a unique
routeable IP...
I just finished uploading some files (large, streaming media to a streaming
media hosting service) on an NT box using ws-ftp
throughput was reported as 400-500 kb/s, approximately the same for
download speeds...
had a client send us some html last night, and he was supposed to get some
.ai files (large) he was getting throuhput at around 80kb/s
thinking it might have been his connectivity...
vnc'd to my computer at home (w98 box, cable modem) ftp'd first to my
streaming host, got 800+kb/s down and 150 kb/s up (cap on upload, expected
that throughput up)
connected via vnc (again, lengthy logon process) to my RH6.2 box at work,
and just like our client, about 60 to 80 kb/s
came in to work, logged on to the RH box, and connected to my streaming
media server ftp. This is the server I get 400kb/s+ from on the NT box.
again, about 40kb/s on Linux
So, it would appear that the bottleneck is on the Linux box, no?
are there any switches, or config settings to make during the install? I
don't remember seeing one...just asked for basic host and IP info.
I would really like to get this up and running. (efficiently running, that
is!)
thanks for your help

Since both mice and keyboards seem to use the same Linux USB

for one and not the other. I'll give it a try and post back if

Building everything from ground up, using only the GNU source, is definitely a
challenge, but once it was done... I can honestly say that I don't care if I
ever see another "convenient" RPM package. Having built a version of LFS (I used
more up to date sources where needed), and compiling sources for just about
everything else that I had on my RH7 systems, I found the LFS approach to be
both more stable and 30 percent smaller than the RH distribution (including X,
KDE, and GNOME)... Another good thing is that literally everything is built and
optimized for my Athlon CPU.
I'd be lying if I said that it was a snap to compile and install everything, but
having been through it, for me anyway it was well worth the trouble... A couple
of cautions:
If you're using RH7 or gcc-2.96-x (from anywhere)... replace it (gcc-2.96-x, and
it's libraries) before you begin... when it comes to stock kernel sources, and
building the official release of gcc (2.95.x) - it (gcc-2.96.x) will fail
silently (successful compilations, bad binaries)... This was a nightmare since I
was halfway through the building phase and had to start over again with a stable
compiler (involving a 7 step process ):
1- the removal of gcc-2.96-79, it's libraries-libstdc++,libobjc and others,
2-installing egcs from RH6.2,
3-compiling a statically-linked gcc-2.95.x ( no 2.96/beta contamination )
4-removing egcs,
5-installing gcc-2.95.x,
6-rebuilding gcc-2.95.x dynamically-linked ( libraries separate for some
.configure scripts)
7-installing the dynamically-linked gcc-2.95.x to prevent the editing of
configure scripts that checked directories for the gcc libraries.
The "lfs-commands" scripts aren't perfect ( not with RH anyway), for several of
them, it was necessary to either modify the command line, or export additional
environment variables... you'll see what I mean. :)
In the original lfs-packages, there are several patches included which you'll
need to apply before compilation.
Not mandatory, but probably recommended... I built my lfs systems with kernel
2.4.3 for which I installed the stock 2.4.3 kernel headers on the machine that I
used to compile the lfs sources... I'm not too sure if it made any difference or
not, but I know that everything is intact.

I know. I had to enter a modeline for my monitor to get it to 80 hz too.
But in my experience most systems get a "close enough" configuration out
of XF86Setup. It does a better job than that hellspawn Xconfigurator
anyway (although I have to admit that the last time I attempted
statutory rape with Xconfigurator was on redhat 6, my last redhat)
