Thanks for the suggestions.. I guess I'll give that method a try.. However I
do have a Syquest 1.5 Gig Removable that is hooked up to a scsi controller..
I think I'll try installing linux to that and then build my new system onto
the HDD..
I could make a Bootable CD with the stuff I need, Would that be possible??

Ed, I have just upgraded to Suse 7.0 and I have the same problem with the IPX
tools and ncpfs. This worked fine for me in Suse 6.0, by the way, so something
has changed with Suse 7.0. I hope someone here has an idea. So far, no help
from the Suse mailing list.

Hook it up to somewhere (/dev/hdd, maybe?), insert a formatted ORB disk,
and do
mkdir /mnt/orb (only do this once!)
mount -t vfat /dev/hdd /mnt/orb
then you should be able to access the thing via /mnt/orb. You must
umount the disk before ejecting it. If it won't work, modprobe
ide-floppy. If that doesn't work, you'll have to boot the system with
hdd=ide-scsi as a boot parameter, load the ide-scsi, scsi_mod, and
sd_mod modules, then mount /dev/sda . Basically, it should work just
like a ZIP or JAZ disk.

If you could post the results of "cat /proc/pci" that directly concern
your network card, I think someone could help you. Or search Deja for
info on "linksys" and see what you come up with?
BTW, don't crosspost to so many bloody groups! It's bad nettiquette.

Subject: Mandrake 7.1 ->7.2 upgrade w/o CD?
Date: Tue, 21 Nov 2000 03:30:04 -0000
Howdy,
I'd like to upgrade from Mandrake 7.1 to 7.2 (to get fixes and KDE2).
However, not having a CD-burner, I'm wondering how (and take it easy on
this newbie) I go about upgrading.
The mirror sites have an upgrade folder, with folders 'SRPMS' and
'RPM'...and yep, they have RPM's in them. But how do I install (assuming
that the upgrade folder for 7.2 is what I should be using) from these? Do
I install from the console in 7.1?
The install.txt only mentions installing from CD, DOS, and floppy. Not
to be dense, but as someone who already has an installation, do I have to
choose from one of these just as I did when I installed for the first time?
Lastly, will my current configuration remain (somewhat) intact, or will
the upgrade roll over everything?
Thanks in advance for any/all advice,
Matt

Do you mean--why do I have an empty partition for hda2? I had
originally formatted that partition as fat16 (for later storing system
commander), but changed my mind and eliminated the partition.
However, I was trying to be careful by putting the Linux / partition
as the 1st one (in the partition list) and also at the bottom of the
disk to ensure that it would not be above the 1024 cylinder limit.

I'm roughly trying to do the same thing (except I have Linux in the
1st partition and Windows in a later one). I've got the partitions
for Linux all set up (there are more Linux partitions in the extended
partition) and have the first Linux partition below the 1024 cylinder
limit so that both lilo and vmunix will be accessible once they are
written into the first partition.
However, the installation program (in particular Linux fdisk) is
refusing to read the /dev/hda partition table. I haven't a clue as to
why it would be having problems, especially since Linux mount can read
the partition table and mount the Linux partition.
Note, I only have 1 hard disk (and the windows installation on it was
preinstalled by HP "at the factory"). I'm not anxious to remove the
Windows installation and attempt reinstalling it (especially as I am
not convinced that would help). My feeling is that I could blow the
disk to completely empty and Linux fdisk still would refuse to read
the partition table.

Sounds like you have the exact same setup I have. I am assuming that
you are using an ASUS A7V mobo with 2 or more HD's and you are booting
linux from floppy.
Unfortunately, I am not able to pass these parameters at boot
automatically, either.
Aaron Cline has written a very good mini-HOWTO on this very subject
and I am assuming you got these parameters from there. If not, his
HOWTO is at http://www.geocities.com/ender7007/index.html
He solved his problem by compiling a new 2.4.0 kernel, but like you, I
am fairly new at linux and am a little nervous about this.
If you find a way to pass these arguments to the kernel without typing
them in, I would appreciate a note to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Simarlarly, I'll let you know if I make any progress.

Subject: How to run RedHat installation program without running fdisk?
Date: Tue, 21 Nov 2000 05:04:24 GMT
I have an HP 9680C with a 40GB ATA Maxtor drive on it. Win 98 2e was
pre-installed on the system.
I made partitions (the 1st being below the 1024 cylinder limit) for
Linux.
However, when I run my RedHat 6.0 installation CD on it. The CD fails
to install because fdisk refuses to read the partition table.
If at that point, I switch to the bash screen, I can mknod and mount
the partitions. (Similarly, the partition check that the installation
CD ran printed out the partitions exactly the way I would expect.)
The question is:
Is there a way to mount the partitions by hand and convince the
installation program to install into the partitions without running
fdisk (or disk druid)?
Here is the way the disk is currently partitioned
/dev/hda - Model Maxtor 94098U8
partitions
hda1 300MB ext2 (for linux /)
hda2 300MB unformatted
hda3 2GB fat32 (win 98 2e)
Extended Partition (rest of disk)
128mb swap
128mb swap
128mb ext2 (for /tmp)
128mb ext2 (for /var)
2GB ext2 (for /usr)
8GB ext2 (for /home)
24GB fat32
The error message I get from fdisk is:
The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 5293.
This is larger than 1024, and may cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g. LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
(e.g. DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)
Unable to read /dev/hda

Just a wild idea. The Compaq systems at work have a "factory installed" hidden
partition at the start of the disk. Could it be that your HP uses a similar scheme?
