@HOME has no clue about helping you hide from crackers.
They post your ip in the news header.

Auh, there was a malfunction between the keyboard and the chair,
/etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd-eth0.info's date stamp is the last time
        dhcpcd obtained the lease.

It's not something you need to look up. You need to edit /etc/hosts and
add an entry for yourself. Something like

It is to lpr. /dev/lp0 is a character device! Printers print
characters.

I agree with RB to a point. But I would upload all important data to my ftp

magic and then load mandrake.

Make sure you defrag your windows partition and then use partition
magic. The linux-mandrake install has partition magic in it and you can
change the size of the windows partition and add linux partitions in the
newly made space. This works well!!

I'm just about to do this any day (waiting on RH 7.1 disks), but the best
resource I've seen is the January 2001 Sys Admin magazine.

Luckily the article is available free on the net. Try both:

www.samag.com

or

www.sysadminmag.com

There is also a "Boot + Root + Raid" HOWTO on the net.

The snd-card-intel8x0 module needs to be loaded. Have you done a

Now that you have all the other drivers loaded, you may be able to
load the snd-card-intel8x0 module manually. Try using 'insmod'...

man XF86Config

ls /etc/X11/XF86Config* for configuration file

There is no "official" gcc 2.96 update.

"It has come to our attention that some GNU/Linux distributions

"We would like to point out that GCC 2.96 is not a formal GCC

Red Hat might call the 2.96 release "official", but the GNU

I've been having similar problems. I've been updating my kernels with the
-ac* patches from kernel.org, and I haven't had any problem since I
updated to -ac9 a couple of days ago. I think he's up to -ac11 today, but
I haven't updated to that one yet.

You may want to report this to the linux-kernel mailing list. Alan Cox is
trying to track down various problems that people are reporting with
Athlons under 2.4.3, particularly those running on VIA chipsets.

He suggested to me that I should test my memory with memtest86, which can
be obtained at http://reality.sgi.com/cbrady_denver/memtest86/. That
turned out not to be the problem in my case, but you may want to run the
tests anyway.

Finally, if you're compiling your own kernels, specify your boxes as
"i686" rather than "Duron/Athlon/K7" for now. Lots of people are
reporting problems with kernels compiled as Athlons (though Alan is
beginning to suspect that that is also a VIA issue).

Sound card is SBLive! and works fine with all audio types. The CD Player

Subject: Re: Screen Resolution How do I change it

You should go into /etc/XF86Config with your favorite text editor, and add a #
to comment out the "mode line" (or whatever it's called) for the higher
resolutions that the monitor can't take. You'll see what I mean once you
scroll down to the "Monitors" and "Video" sections. There should be several
for 1024x768 -- comment them all out.

In theory, you should do this by editing the lines that tell what your monitor
is capable of, but X is extrememly sloppy about figuring out acceptable video
modes from given specs -- sometimes way too liberal, and on the same run way
too conservative. Being truthful or subtle with it is not fruitful :-)

Before doing this, while running X, try hitting Ctrl-Alt-+ or - (on the numeric
keypad, not the main keyboard) to cycle thru the other video modes that X has
determined your system can run. You should find the 800x600 or whatever mode
already available.

And you may already know that you can "bail out" back to 80x24 hardware text
screen by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. This has saved many a monitor from
smoking :-) --Mike K.

Well, I already had 127.0.0.1 localhost -- do I need that additional line? And
what numbers should I put in the routing field? Make up something?

>Well, you could try telnetting to localhost.

OK, and see if telnet even exists on my system. ifconfig and route do not.

OK, I looked again and it's char-major-10-135. I musthave thought that was
just a version number. So char-major is part of the character handling
drivers? Yours is the first I've ever been able to find any mention of it, and
I have a stack of Linux books. Lucky there are still people to ask.

>That's what "filter" means!
Yes, once you realize they are indeed filters, that exist outside of lpr and
aren't just plug-ins or dll's. You can tell I've spent a couple years on the
"wrong" OS, after 20 years of UNIX :-)

Now to see if I can rebuild the kernel without blowing away my entire disk

Just so you know, you do not 'mount' a music CD. If it works for root,
but not for a normal user, you probably either have to change permission
of the /dev/hd# of your cdrom (which RH might change back for security) or
add your user to the group (disk?) that has permission to read and write
it.

/usr/X11R6/bin/XF86Setup or /usr/X11R6/bin/Xconfigurator might be what u
want to run.

Hi!
The message IS clear. The keyboard is sending characters but the system cannot
accept them as password, it has something else written there already.
BTW the password characters ARE NOT displayed on screen, not even as stars.

Someone set the initial password during install and cannot recall it now.
Administrative issue, boot from rescue diskette and repair.

Or reinstall taking care to read info from screen before pushing buttons.

Have fun.

I do not understand this. I have samba running on my machine, but not
Apache. In fact, I did rpm -e apache, or something like that, and it
all still works. Why would you need a web server running to support
swat? Swat sort-of is a web server.
