I just installed Linux on my Compaq Presario with a similar set up. I used
fips to roll back the primary partition to make room for linux (I had to
move the windows swap file to the restore partition you mention though,
because defrag wouldn't move it to the beginning of the drive, meaning I
didn't have empty space at the end of my drive for fips to work with).

Then I just used disk druid during the RH 6.2 install (note: you will have
to use text setup, graphical setup doesn't seem to work on these
laptops--but you already knew that from the other HOWTOs) to partition the
space created by fips. You will want to select custom installation for two
reasons: 1) The server class installation will DELETE EXISTING PARTITIONS.
2) The workstation class installation wants to make more partitions than you
have room for (/, /boot, /swap). With the primary and Compaq restore
partitions, you can only make two more. I made / and /boot partitions
because I have 128 MB of RAM (so I decided to forego the swap partition),
but / and /swap would work to.

You can remove the system restore partition, but then Compaq will be
confused if you ever call them for tech support on your Windows system (if
you are going to keep your windows system. If not, there is little reason
for keeping Compaq's restore partition, except maybe to restore the system
if you ever wanted to sell or give away your laptop).

HTH,
Eric

I turned on auto-login in a dialog while running Mandrake-Update, and
can't figure out how to turn it off! I've spent more than an hour poring
through the startup scripts, but haven't found any reference to autologin.
The docs that come with Mandrake, a Dejanews search, and a search of the
Mandrake website haven't turned up anything. Can anyone provide a clue?

Does anyone know of an ethernet card that is *gaurenteed* to work with
RH7? The Redhat hardware compatibility site lists my linksys EtherFAst
10/100 as compatible and "very easy to install", which has turned out to
be untrue, so I no longer have any faith in the info on their site.

How old is your HP CD-Writer? I bought mine over a year ago. It's a
9110i. It came with a version of Adaptec's Easy CD Creator and Direct
CD. (Adaptec has a free update to this version at their Web site. After
installing the update last December, my version now says 3.5c). This
version of Easy CD Creator has an option in the File pull down menu
called "Create CD from Disc Image". The default file type is CIF. But
the file type menu also lists ISO. Burning the Redhat ISO images onto
CD-R discs was a snap. After burning the CDs, I put the first one into
my drive, changed my CMOS settings to boot from a CD-ROM, and re-booted.
The Linux boot menu popped right up.

Help!

linux newbie about to give up, spec of PC:

Dell Workstation 400, twin PII-266, 256MB RAM, two 2 gig SCSI-3 drives with
Adaptec 2940U SCSI card.

Mandrake 6.5 is so slow it is unusable, takes 15 seconds to put calc on screen
in KDE, produces 4.3 bogomips (whatever they are). There are pigeons in my
garden that can count faster than this Linux turd.

Suse 7.0 just does not work, on boot it always locks up around ldconfig or
memstat. (have now tried three times to get it working)

Suse support is less than useless, if you are thinking of buying anything from
Suse, don't.

I have no idea what is going wrong, there are no probs reported during the
instal of Mandrake or Susel, all h/w is identified OK

Linux is the only OS on the PC, ie no dual boot, with clean partitions.

I have spent about three weeks on this and have just about had enough - Linux
easy to install? not in my experience!

Am I unlucky or is it a pile of $%^ ?

All suggestions welcome, otherwise one more copy of NT Server is about to be
deployed...

"rmmod -as" every 10 minutes removes unused/stale kernel modules, if they
exist. It's a good idea to leave it alone, it's self cleaning maintenance.
You will probably find the cron job script in /etc/cron.d/kmod. You will
find other system maintenance cron jobs in /etc/cron.daily, /etc/crond.weekly,
etc.

Your parallel port is probably working just fine. The part about
"no IEEE-1284" pertains to printers which give feedback to the
system. This just tells you that your printer is not communicating
two ways. Some newer laser jets provide feedback telling the OS
info on the print jobs (Perhaps you've seen under windows the cute
little printer icons that show the paper running thru the printer as it
is actually happening). Your printer apparently is not one of these.
Your problem is probably elsewhere.

Have you tried printing a standard text file from the command prompt?

lpr file.txt lp0

Hope this helps.

Is there some feature in Red Hat 7 that's not in 6.* that is making you
want to upgrade, or are you upgrading just for the sake of upgrading?
The reason I ask, is that I've had RH 6.0 running all nice and happy for
over a year, and don't plan on upgrading until the hdd(s) it's on croaks,
and that's going to be a long while 'cause they are fairly new. It's the
time tested and proven theory of: "If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It!".
Besides, Red Hat 7.0 is very glitchy, so if ya' gotta' upgrade and want
to use Red Hat, you will be much better off waiting for 7.1, 7.2, or the
next version with the 2.4 kernel and using 6.2 in the mean time.

You need to export the Fax-Queue Directories via Samba to the Windows Boxes.
