Is it possible to get KDE to use xscreensaver?
Starting with KDE Control Center and clicking on the following
Desktop --> Screensaver --> XScreenSaver
you get to select Setup to bring up Xscreensaver's window.
But then, how do you get any of xscreensaver's programs to run?
Configuration: Red Hat 7 with KDE Version 1.1.2 on a DELL I7500.
All that happens when the little padlock is clicked (to invoke
the screensaver and lock the screen) is the screen goes blank.
The screen is locked but no nice xscreensaver programs run.

I would like to get XSCREENSAVER started when I start a X-Window
session. Now I have to activate it manually but I would like to
initialize the countdown when I start a X-Window session.
I've been told in an IRC channel that I have to create a ".xinitrc" file
in my /home directory but I have no idea about how to do this.

Any Wine version that's not today's CVS is ancient history :-)
Also, proper bug reports on non-working apps are a good thing (hint hint).

Sorry. I meant /etc/exports, but I was mistaken about what your

I ran across this a few weeks ago. I bought a new 20GB drive and put winME
on the first 11G and then put RH 7 on the rest. I replaced the "linear"
with "lba32" and all was well.

This works, but if you run into trouble with your new X configuration
and are forced to reboot the system, it'll come back up in X again (or
try to), which might leave you in a position of having an unbootable
box.
I would suggest a slight modification to this procedure, based on
a recent painful experience.
I agree with making changes from the non-X runlevel (level 3 on most
systems, check the contents of /etc/inittab for details). BTW, I
do this on RH with the 'telinit' command (as in 'telinit 3').
Log in as 'root' (or su up to root), enter the 'telinit 3' command
to drop out of X and back to text mode, and edit the line in
/etc/inittab
that contains the word "initdefault" and a number. Change the number
from 5 to 3 (or whatever will change you from an X startup to a
"normal" i.e. non-X startup).
Now, you can make your X configuration changes with impunity, and
can reboot if the absolute worst happens. I stupidly got myself into
a situation with default run level of 5 in inittab, and screwed up
X so badly with my playing that I couldn't even boot the system --
kept trying to start X, X would crash, init would try to restart
the display manager, which would try to start X, and round and round
we go.
Once you're happy with the way X looks (using 'startx' for testing),
log in as 'root' and enter 'telinit 5' (or whatever run level brings
up X). If all is well there, *then* re-edit /etc/inittab to change
your default runlevel back to the level it was before.
Bottom line: leave yourself a way to get back to a shell prompt
until you're certain that your system will start after your changes.
Hope this helps!

I'm not sure how you got the idea that you needed to build a new kernel,
but I can guarentee that you don't need to do it in COL2.4. I think you
need to take many steps back and start learning the basics before trying
to build new kernels on a system that you seem to be quite lost in.

Use a text editor as the user you login as. Try this:
vi .xinitrc
then enter in said file:
exec xscreensaver &
exec urwindowmanagerhere <whatever you use>
Mine looks like this:
exec xscreensaver &
exec wmaker
Don't forget the the little "&" after the first one. Do not put an & after
the last one.

I'm somewhat new at this whole thing, but I want to run Linux instead of
the Windows 98 that was previously on my computer. I have a copy of the
download version of Caldera eDesktop 2.4 on a burned cd. After an
ill-advised and sad attempt at creating a partition, I decided that I
would just reformat using fdisk and start fresh, running only Linux.
Now the problem.. I have a clean hard drive with one empty DOS
partition that I can get rid of with no trouble at all. What is the
best way to get this OS on my system? Keeping in mind that I have no
cdrom drivers on my computer right now. How do I negotiate file sytems?
Do I get the drivers, load the cd and let the installation disk take
over? Or is there a better way to skip DOS entirely? The CDROM drive
is a TDK Valeo Recordable. Anywhere to start would be great.
Thanks! Please e-mail me a response at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I had a similar problem a while back, using two el cheapo ne2000 clones. I
read somewhere that chepo cards don't always work. Not under Red Hat 6.2
anyway.
try this in /etc/conf.modules:
alias eth0 8390
alias eth0 ne
alias eth1 ne
options ne io=0xXXX,0xXXX irq=Y,Y
alternatively
insmod 8390
insmod ne io=.....
critical bit is to load the 8390 module first.
Hope this helps.

Not sure about 6.2, but I think earlier RH used
printtool
I had the same problem on my Mandrake 7.2 and
was able to install printtool from the CDROM to

do the job. Maybe you can put a printtool in your RH 6.2

No problem. I use RedHat which uses rc.local. I am not familiar with Suse, but
now know that it uses boot.local. And thanks for the response. Sometimes I
never know what the result is. Good to hear about a success.
Daryl.

I don't know anything about your network card problems, but I do know that
my laptop will lock up when waking after suspend if I don't disable or
eject my pcmcia nic before going into suspend.
For any box that is up all the time you should disable any APM in BIOS and
not usually use Linux APM for anything other than a laptop. You can still
use hdparm to put unused drives to sleep and power saving features of your
video and monitor if supported. But if your cpu goes to sleep, networking
may not come back up properly.
