Yes, but you can subscribe and use it for free. You can go to
https://www.redhat.com/network/ to register for a free RHN account, that
lets you use up2date as much as you want on as many systems you want.

What costs is if you want *automatic* installation of updates with RHN
on *more than one system* - you can even have automatic installation of
updates on one system for free.

If you use kernel 2.4, it would be crazy to use ipchains/ipmasqadm
instead of iptables. Look at

http://netfilter.samba.org/

There are some howto's and other documentation.

I'm beginning to learn Linux is quite amenable and forgiving in those
areas as long as the changes are somewhat sane, compensated for and some
continuity maintained. But, sometime unexpected and bizarre results can
be obtained. ;-)

I've also learned I can get amazing, massive amounts of source code to
compile completely error free which will simply not do anything. ;-)

Hi all. I have Abit kt7a-raid motherboard. In the first Raid hd I've
installed w98. Linux, on the contrary, is installed in a normal ide hd on
the other controller. Where and how can I instal lilo to boot w98 and linux?
Now I've installed it on the normal ide disk but w98 on the raid doesn't
start.

Aktually it isn't. Until one gets to grips with pure iptables,
it is best to use the ipchains rules with the ipchains module
of iptables.

Hm. I have one of these - bought it used - and the "dangle" connector
won't stay in the card when I push it in... Don't know if it's supposed
to, though. Is it?

That's not quite what I meant. If you have some old ipchains scripts,
then yes - use the ipchains module.

If you do not know how to use either iptables nor ipchains/ipmasqadm, I
would say, that iptables is the one to go for. I understood it as, the
guy did not know neither and wanted to know what to do - and then I'd
say - go for iptables.

Sounds like a routing problem, check "route -n" and post the output from
this command if you're connected & in case you're not connected.

May be someone knows more, if the docs of "roaring penguin" don't give
you a clue,
about how routing gets changed in case of connecting with your DSL.

I don't know what kernel RPM's are available for RH 6.1, but it is easy
enough (and good learning experiance) to install your own from source.

I know that kernels at least through 2.2.15 had a potential security flaw
and someone told me this extended beyond that. If you cannot find a newer
one at RedHat's site, download kernel 2.2.19 or newer from
http://www.kernel.org/ or mirror.

cd /usr/src
rm linux
mkdir linux-2.2.19 (or actual kernel version)
ln -s linux-2.2.19 linux

This symlinks /usr/src/linux to /usr/src/linux-2.2.19

Then use bunzip2 and tar to expand .bz2 source or tar xzvf to expand
/tar.gz or .tgz source from /usr/src which should dump the source into
/usr/src/linux. See /usr/src/linux/README and
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/ dir.

You may want to duplicate the portion of your /etc/lilo.conf that boots
your current kernel and change one to a different label and cp the
relevant files in /boot to a different name to make sure that you can
still boot your current kernel if you make an error with the new one.

If not using an RPM kernel, you probably need to uncomment the line that
tells the kernel where the boot files are (/boot).

lilo does what it always did, what more should it do ?
well it has got a menu with arrow keys and it has
lba32 for using the extended interrupt 13,
which means you can break the 8 gigabyte limit,

and it has "linear" for doing geometry translation at run
time instead of at install time.

so if you need lilo to have fancy graphics, you can add that.

I originally got a cardbus nic (Netgear FA510c) and then a modem (Zoom
2975) and the overall cost was about the same as a combo card. I am
unlikely to use both at the same time, but I do commonly use a CF or
SmartMedia pc card adapter at the same time as the nic.

The combo cards tend to have a 16-bit nic which uses more power and may
run hotter than cardbus, but you are unlikely to notice any speed
difference.

One advanatge of having a nic that fits in one slot is that you might be
able to set up different network settings for each slot. For example I
set up Win98se to use hard coded IP in slot 0 and dhcp for slot 1. I am
not sure how to do this in Linux (pcmcia schemes), but it is easy enough
to change network settings on the fly.

NOTE: Beware of controllerless (Winmodem) pc card modems. If a modem says
it works with Mac and DOS you are probably safe.

I have successfully installed RedHat7.1 on my second physical HDD. SC2000
is my boot loader for Win2K and WinME on my first physical drive. RH boots
from the floppy. Lilo was not installed during the initial setup.
What can I do within Gnome (or at the command line) to allow the Linux
partition on my second HDD to be bootable such that SC2000 can detech and
load this OS ?
(can this partition be started without lilo?, I'd also like to avoid writing
to or using the MBR if possible).
I'd very much appreciate a step by step guide on doing this.

More details:
MBR: contains System commander
1st HDD: Two Win OSs
2nd HDD: 1st primary partition: Linux Swap: 2nd primary partition: Linux
native:
3rd extended logical partition: Fat32 - a data storage for
win apps.

Hi,

I posted this question before, but now it has been updated with new log
information. I really hope this helps.

I wanted to install Linux Redhat 7.1 on my computer, so I saved up some
money and bought a 'new' 3.2 gb hdd (WD). I downloaded both the ISO files
and burned them on a CD. So far so good.

CD 1 is bootable and took me to the installation menu. Keyboard and Mouse
detected (cordless). I partitioned linux using the disk druid and made a 128
mb swap file and the rest (I checked use remaining space) linux native (29xx
mb). I did a custom installation and checked most of the packages, in total
1.1 gb. My diamond viper v550 card was detected and also my monitor works
fine. So far so good. I finally came to the part where the files were copied
and installed. First he started to format both partitions (native and swap
(128 mb))
and then things went wrong: half way the status bar i got the error : "Error
writing install image to disk. You probably run out of disk space". This is
not possible, cause i have 3 gb of empty space and only 1 gb of packages. I
figured it must be a bad block on my "new" hdd, so i took another hdd (which
was tested and ok.) but the same problem at the same time. Then i figured
something was wrong with the ISO file and downloaded both files from a
different location and burned them on a CD again. But after installing
again, same problem, same time. I tried selecting different packages and
changing my partitions (I added /boot (300mb) and enlarged my swap, but
still the same error). My configuration:

Intel p3-450 (slot 1)
256 mb memory
prim master : maxtor 8.4 gb (win2k pro is here)
prim slave : WD 3.2 gb (linux should be here)
sec. master : philips 40 x cdrom
sec. slave : philips CDrw
Diamond viper v550
Logitech cordless desktop
Eicon diva ISDN

When I do a "df" when the error appears, i get the following output:

Mount point 1k-blocks Used Available

/mnt/sysimage/proc 0 0 0

When I look into the error messages i see the following information:

<4> Unable to identify CDrom format
<6> CDROM open failed
<4> hdc: command error: status=0x51 {DriveReady Seekcomplete error}
<4> hdc: command error=0x50
<4> end_request : I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 1078404

I really want to install RH 7.1, so I hope someone can help me fix this
problem.

Hope to hear from you,

Tried the cat command, but it just told me "error writing output No Space
left on device" which was helpfull so I decided to try a different
Linux's installer to see if the same thing happened (Mandrake 7.0) and
crashed out at the same stage reporting:

VPS: Cannot open root device on 08:01
Kernel panic VPS Unable to mount root fs on 08:01

All of this worked identically before (I know I kept a log book of the
options I used to install) so I'm beginning to think its a more
fundimental problem with the hard disc.

What a way to spend a weekend.
