NT4 or 2K into a 4 GB partition and linux into a 2 GB partition, and the
instructions on V-Communications

Having looked some more at things, i now suspect the mixup is (partially?)
due to the fact that the two partitions are extended.

windows recognizes both d: and e:
but it reports them both to have exactly the same size (7+ GB) when in
fact d: is only 4G and only e: is 7G.

ive also tried playing with linux's mount -t vfat/auto/msdos and -o fat and
-o blocksize but to no avail.

any advice?

In Redhat 6.2, I used netcfg to configure ppp0 to connect to my ISP. It
worked flawlessly.

In Redhat 7.0, I again used netcfg to configure ppp0 and then invoked
the script ifup with "ifup ppp0". This time, however, the modem does
not dial out. In fact, the modem isn't even accessed. I then read
every HOWTO document I could find on pppd, networking, dial-up
connections, etc., and tried all their troubleshooting suggestions to no
avail.

I have a standalone Intel Pentium II workstation with no network cards
installed, just a 56K modem.

Using ifconfig and route to troubleshoot what's happening, here's what I
found:

A. After booting the system but before invoking the ifup script, here's
what ifconfig and route show:

     [/root]# ifconfig -a
     lo        Link encap:Local Loopback
               inet addr:127.0.0.1  Mask:255.0.0.0

               TX packets:14 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
     carrier:0
               collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

     [/root]# route -n
     Kernel IP routing table
     Destination     Gateway         Genmask         Flags Metric

     0        0 lo

B. Here's how things look after entering "ifup ppp0" at a shell prompt:

     [/root]# ifup ppp0
     [/root]# ifconfig -a
     lo        Link encap:Local Loopback
               inet addr:127.0.0.1  Mask:255.0.0.0

I haven't a clue where the Destination address of 10.112.112.112 comes
from and where the internet address of 10.64.64.64 comes from!

C. And here's how things look after entering "ifdown ppp0":

     [/root]# ifdown ppp0
     [/root]# ifconfig -a
     lo        Link encap:Local Loopback
               inet addr:127.0.0.1  Mask:255.0.0.0

Does anyone have any clue what is going on here and how I can fix this
problem?

Subject: Re: DHCP/BootPC setup trouble
Date: Fri, 01 Dec 2000 05:21:17 GMT

I'm not familiar with Debian but I believe the standard method to obtain a
DHCP lease is with your ifup scripts

In Redhat its under
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts

My file ifcfg-eth0 is a static ip:
DEVICE=eth0
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=static
IPADDR=192.168.1.1
NETMASK=255.255.255.0

My file ifcfg-eth1 is a dynamic ip:
DEVICE=eth1
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=dhcp

Like I said, I've never used Debian but I believe most linux dists are
somewhat standard for this. Your files might be located in a different
directory.

Check out the networking howto for much more information.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!

They charged you money for this:

Boot from any win9x boot disk. At the a: prompt, do fdisk /mbr

This tells fdisk to erase the master boot record, and !voila! no more

Dear all,

 I have just setup a Linux RedHat 6.0 on a laptop. Everything is fine and I
am now able to get into the GNOME/KDE interface.

I would like to install the driver for a PCMCIA card. I slotted in a "Xircom
CreditCard Ethernet 10/100Ready", then I restarted the system. The card is
not detected, I supposed. I have no idea on how to install the driver for
any PCMCIA card. May I know:

1. How should I verify that the driver for PCMCIA controller has been
detected and installed correctly ? The laptop come with a Ricoh cardbus
controller.

2. How should I install the driver for any PCMCIA card that is slotted in ?

3. If everything is fine, can I have hot swap of PCMCIA card just like
Win98/2000 ? How should I stop the driver before the eject the card?

Any advice will be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Sounds like you got RAID support in your kernel and something is
happening with the md driver.
Recompile w/o RAID support and the md error should disappear.

Not sure why the first error is appearing.

yeah, backup your data and use any program you want to repartition your
drive. Create a small boot partition in teh beginning of the drive for
Linux, then create a partition for Windows and then create a 3rd for
Linux, and a 4th if u want a swap partition. Install 98 first and then
reinstall Linux.

Besides Partition Magic I dont think there is a program available that
allows resizing of partitions w/o losing data but some people still back
their data up b/c they don't want to take chances.

It may be that Linux doesn't know your default route, which would be the
IP of your router. U can use the 'route' command to set your def. route.
