Hi David,
Thanks for your help.
When I ran crontab -e and edited the line, it created
the cron file in /tmp Is it supposed to go here? Should
I be worried about it being deleted?

The problem was Netscape Communicator 4.5. For some reason it wasn't
updating the user_prefs(...); entries in the prefs.js file correctly. The
proxy configuration never got installed correctly.

Hi Olav,
I tried this last night, but I have no record in the /var/log/messages
folder that said that samba restarted.
Have you got any ideas?

It won't make much difference, DOS is not going be able to access the
linux partitions as it does not understand the linux filesystem. Linux
can mount and access DOS filesystems. Just make a partition for DOS and
install it first, then install linux.

Hi,
I have just installed RH 6.2 on a small embedded PC with a Cyrix GX P233
type chip and the video is on the processor. I believe this falls under
the card type of mediagx. After many different configurations, I can
only get X to come up in 640x480. Anyone else had these problems? I am
using the XFree86 that came with RH 6.2 (3.3.6).

pipe the hd and cdrom info to the kernel but it still hangs. Any ideas?

Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 16:13:36 -0700
Hello,
This is my first time trying to use/install Linux and I've come up with a
problem that I can't find any previous documentation for. I'm trying to
install RH 6.1 but during installation it gives an error stating that "no
valid devices were found on which to create filesystems". I'm assuming this
means that it can't find my hard drives. My primary hard drive is a 30GB
that has one partition running Win98. A installed a second drive, 2GB, that
is a slave which I'm going to install Linux on. When I installed the second
drive a simply adjusted jumper settings and plugged it into the cable. I
didn't do anything adjustments in the Bios or in windows and it came up fine
when Win98 started. Was there something else I should have done while
installing it to make Linux find it? Or am I not on the right track?
Thanks for reading this post and for any comments.

First thing Phil...
Have you yet got a Linux Destro? if so what version and company is it?
If not then go and get SuSE Linux 6.4 and I will be happy to help you
config a dual booting system using SuSE Linux there is no problem on the
size of your hard drive but unless you use a destro such as SuSE 6.4 its
not so easy to config.
With SuSE Linux you can totally customise your partitions (expert mode via
yast1) and configure dual booting on any size of hard drive. Unfortunately
with other Linux destros its not so easy.
So if you have not got a Linux destro I would suggest you go for SuSE 6.4
and email me for any help you need to set it up.
I will be most happy to help you (Free help as is the Linux way)!
I have built many dual booting systems including the Athlon 600 and it
really works well under Linux.

James

Did you try picking an ESS card with the appropriate irq and io address in
sndconfig and did it make a sound?
Try the following, but backup before attempting:
It looks like you are using the development kernel 2.3.99. When you created
your new kernel, you probably did not create the sound modules. After doing the
make files (take a long break in between :) ),
# su -
# cd /usr/src/linux
# make xconfig # select sound and make modules of all the sound
components especially ESS stuff
# make dep
# make zImage
# make modules
# make modules_install
======= after a long time=============
# reboot
# su -
# sndconfig # see if you can do the autoprobing or select an ESS sound driver.

Actually, I have the ide-scsi module loaded in rc.modules. Is there a
reason for doing it in conf.modules? The one reason I can think of is
that the kernel would automatically load/unload the module, but I have
the autoload feature disabled, so would it work?

Subject: "text install" from floppy (SuSE 6.4) needed
Date: 11 Jul 2000 23:24:27 GMT
I am trying to install SuSE 6.4 on an older Intel P90 PC.
It can't boot from the CD-ROM, so I need to use a floppy disk.
The video mode install for YaST1 and YaST2 do not work correctly -
the refresh rate is all wrong, and the screen is completely
un-readable.
So, I'd like to use the text installation mode mentioned in the
SuSE book (the book in the distribution, at:
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/distributions/suse/6.4/docu/book-en.pdf).
The book specifies to hold down the CNTL key when the "boot: "
prompt appears.
The problem is that there's no "boot: " prompt with the floppy
disk installation! This seems to work only for a bootable
CD-ROM. I've tried all of the disk images in the 6.4 distribution,
and they all get to the same point. The initial splash screen
graphic from SuSE ("have a lot of fun") displays, but right afterwards
the video settings are changed and the screen become unreadable.
- Do you know how to get to "text" installation mode from a boot
floppy disk?
- Is there another way to control the video refresh rate etc. from
the boot floppy disk, when I can't boot from CD?
Thanks for any ideas. I've installed SuSE successfully on other
computers, but this older one is problematic. I've installed
RedHat on it with no troubles, because their "text mode" is accessible
from the boot floppy prompt. (Otherwise, I have the same problem
with their graphical installation.)

Subject: ftape formatting problem
From: mike <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 01:10:24 GMT
Using the newest ftape and ftape-tools (although I've had this error
before this newest rev), any time I try to format a QIC-80 tape in a
Colorado Jumbo 250 I get right to the very end of formatting (when it's
verifying) and it craps out with:
ftape-io.c (ftape_seek_head_to_track) - track out of bounds.
How can I fix this? Somehow I was able to format another 307ft tape and
have been able to write/read from it just fine. But all I have is the one
tape to use. I've tried more than a few other cartridges but always get
the same thing. Erasing, formatting and verifying go perfectly fine until
the very end (and I retension before starting).
I've tried bulk-erasing, fiddling with various ftape-tool formatting
options, etc., but nothing. I've also tried 'exit' ftape-tools when I hit
the error and killing it but apparently the last thing it does it write
the tape size because if I try to use a tape that's failed this way, ftape
exits stating, 'no space on device'. Kernel is 2.2.5 and I'm using an
FC-20 adapter for which I've compiled the correct parameters and settings
in conf.modules. And like I say, the drive and the one tape I was lucky
enough to get formatted work just fine.
I don't have access to a DOS partition to format the tape(s) with
Colorado's DOS front-end either (I think everything I'd need is bigger
than a floppy also).
Thanks...
Mike

Did you setup the /etc/resolv.conf file with the correct IP addresses of
the ISP's DNS servers? It should be something like this.
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # primary DNS
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # secondary DNS
You may also need to turn on ip_forwarding with:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
If it works then add the above line to the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.local
unless you are using RedHat 6.2 then you would need to make sure the 2
lines below are in /etc/sysctl.conf
# 0 Disables, 1 Enables packet forwarding
net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1
