Sure, why not? But if you want to run KDE1 apps you will likely need to
have QT 1.4x installed as well as kdelibs too.

The big keys here are to have QTDIR set and to either set LD_LIBRARY_PATH
or to put the library path in /etc/ld.so.conf and then run ldconfig

Same as last answer just different places to point to

Your best (read easiest) answer may be to get a standard distribution and
install it, Redhat 7 and Mandrake 7.2 seem to be popular.
BTW- Short, direct, one problem posts will draw more answers.

if your able to get to your hard drive vendors site... you can download the
hard drive utility and reformat your drive to its original state.... much
easier. Some will even reformat the drive or partitions to whatever OS you
are going to install

Thanks for the post, but the day after i posted my problem (as can be
predicted) the net-admin gave me the go-ahead to partition the drive.
And know i have a working RH system, but KDE is in Japaneese. I will

Buy more RAM. You need it and your swap drive will thank you.

System is an IBM netvista w/ the dreaded intel I815 video.
I installed helix gnome on it and now when I try control/alt/F2,etc., I get
a blank screen. Hitting c/a/F7 doesn't restore the desktop. Control/alt/BS
doesn't work either. The only way to restore the screen is c/a/d/.
I'd like some hints and/or a clue how to debug this.

It's been my experience that when building applications that are linked
against the QT-1.4 (I believe most of the transitional distros of Linux,
include both a 1x and 2x versions or at least I know RH 6.1 and this Mdk
7.2 has, I think COL 2.3 has both of them) it's sufficient to just,
depending on the shell you aare using, before you do your ./configure,
to run #:set QTDIR=/path or export QTDIR=/path to get it into your
environment and the application will build against the libs and then go
on and run happily ever more, without having to change the profile or
path statements in your config files. The instructions for building KDE
2 tell you how to go about exporting the /pwd before building to take
care of the later version of QT that is required for it without changing
the path statements.

This is what I had to do with RH6.0 using lilo-0.21-6. Later versions of lilo
are supposed to get around this problem. My question is what is the earliest
version with this capability?

The worst-case scenario is that Linux will be unable to read the drive
contents. Linux initially mounts the file systems as "read-only." Only
after a certain (safe) point is reached, will the init (start-up) process
remount the drives in r/w mode. Your system's perfectly safe until you get
to a shell prompt and start typing. <grins> Don't worry. Changing the
bios setting won't hurt anything. If it doesn't help, just change it back.

The dreaded "unsupported video." Yikes. You can try "xf86config",
"Xconfigurator", or "setup". One of those should bring up the X-Config
proggy. Also, a better place for help would be in "comp.os.linux.x".

Hi
I've been trying to get my USB mouse to work under LM7.2. so far i've had
no luck. The mouse gets detected during the install and boot but i get no
response
from it. I had to use an old PS/2 mouse during install to be able to do
anything
and in my attempts to get the USB mouse working. I tried using drakconf to
change it to USB but it just changes back to the PS/2 one. And of late even
the PS/2 mouse is not responding. I've tried editing my XF86Config to get
the mosue working but i get "No such device" when it tries to accsess the
device (/dev/usbmouse). the symlink is there, pointing to /dev/input/mouse0
(this was done during install by the installer).
Can anyone help me with this?

I use the PuTTY terminal program for MSWin which I got from:

(~200KB) This program is free and does telnet AND ssh1 and
connects to linux as an xterm type terminal, works great for me,

Could it be your video card? I have an old MS-DOS box on a video
switch, and if the monitor isn't switched to it when I boot it, the
video card locks itself into monochrome mode so hard that not even
its setup utility can force it back into colour mode.
Does your problem happen all the time, or just when bring up X
with the KVM switch set to the other machine? I think some video
cards are very sensitive to whether there's anything connected to
them during setup.
Aside from that, my only problem with KVM switches is that those
cheap boxes wear out fast, and I have to jiggle the knobs a lot
to get good contact. I'd love to get a fancy electronic box, but
I'm sharing two monitors among my group of machines (it's really
handy to watch two machines at once sometimes), and I'd hate to
think of what a 2x8 matrix switch would cost, if such a thing
even exists. On top of that, a separate keyboard/mouse switch
would be nice so I could get rid of some of the four keyboards
that are cluttering my desk...

See the IPCHAINS-HOWTO (my Mandrake 7.0 didn't have HOWTO's). There is a
simple 3 liner that would at least get you off the ground to MASQ your
internal net from the internet, but substitute the eth# that your cable
modem uses for ppp0 in the example.
