I get this error whenever I try to recompile a kernel. I did a make mr
proper and most of the errors left, but I still get them - scrolling to
fast to catch the source of course.
What is it and how do I fix it?

An alternative, which does not appear in any how-to's that i've got,
pppd now supports (post 2.3.6 IIRC) the option usepeerdns, which
asks the peer for up to 2 DNS server addresses. The addresses
supplied by the peer (if any) are passed to the /etc/ppp/ip-up
script in the environment variables DNS1 and DNS2.
This is definately a better way to do it if you have accounts with
different ISPs

Hi all. I am successfully running Mandrake 7.1 on my P133 right now. The
machine has 128MB of RAM. When I boot up, the bios reports the machine as
having 128 megs, so that's all fine. When I run linux, though, and use a
utility to see how much memory I am using, such as top, it says that I only
have 64 megs and that almost all of it is being used up. This can't be
right. Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

It all depends on the actual distribution - but its not hard to work
it out for yourself. You just need a starter.
Lilo loads the kernel (compressed) and uncompresses it. The kernel
starts up (with its precompiled stuff) and then starts INIT.
You should read MAN INIT to get an idea of what it does, but take a
look at /etc/inittab and work through it, its not hard.
Fairly early on there is probably a line of the form
si::sysinit:/etc/rc.d/rcsysinit
and init loads this every time it boots. This is a shell script that
does some kernel module checks, mounts the disks (checking them if
necessary), loads the system time from the hardware clock, loads any
non default keyboard map and switches the swap file(s) on. It does
some other stuff that I don't worry about so I chopped out like handle
sound etc.
Then later there is a series of lines (or at least in REDHAT they are
- I hacked mine beyond recognition because I wanted to learn so this
in not exact)
I0:0:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 0
I1:1:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 1
...
I6:6:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 6
What this tells INIT to do is whilst transferring to run level 0 to 6
to execute the appropriate script (and wait for its completion). What
the rc scripts (with the runlevel parameter) does is basically call
all the scripts in /etc/rc.d/rcn.d/Kxxyyy and then Sxxyyy in numeric
order of xx (rcn.d is rc0.d through rc6.d). Each one is not a scripts
but a link to an individual script in /etc/rc.d/init.d which does its
stuff assumimg a parameter start or stop (depending on with it was
linked with Sxx or Kxx). These use a whole set of functions in
/etc/rc.d/init.d/functions so its worth reading them and
understanding.
Finally INIT then processes lines of the form
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1
2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2
...
what this is saying is run program mingetty when entering run levels 2
through 5 and when it exits start it again. Each of these lines
responds to a virtual terminal.
Thats it!
NOW after making you read all of that there is a HOW-TO on my
distribution called "Linux from Scratch HOW-TO". This takes you
through the whole process of setting a Linux up from scratch for
yourself (you create all the init scripts). You don't have to do it,
but its a good read if you are interested).

I've now got the two alphas 2100 A500MP Server here so, I know nothing
about them, now the fun bit...
I've tried to boot the first one but this fails with message:
Fail CPU 00 0007
before any video signal is output to the monitor. Does anybody know
what this indicates ?
I've also tried the second one which gets further. It lists the
installed cards, then states
"OS type NT"
though I don't know where it gets that information from. Might be BIOS
config or disk I guess ? It checks its CPU, RAM etc, but then loops,
repeating the message:
Waiting for dra.0.0.7.0
While two adjacent adapter cards flash their LEDs at the back of the
box.
Any idea what dra.0.0.7.0 is, and why it's waiting for it ? Is it just
sulking because it's not plugged into a network ? Plugging the only
RJ45 socket it into an old 10MHz ethernet hub didn't help.
Or does the 7 in "dra.0.0.7.0" indicate it's SCSI controller problem ?
Cheers, J/.

Well, I'll give this a shot. Check out this page for possible problems.

In particular, note this paragraph:
Bad or Missing Command Interpreter
==================================
The command interpreter cannot be found. Restart your system from another system disk,
and then check the CONFIG.SYS file of your original system disk for a SHELL command. If
there is a SHELL command, make sure the path to the command interpreter is correct. If
there is no SHELL command, either make sure there is a copy of the COMMAND.COM file
in the root directory of the startup drive on the system disk, or add a SHELL command
specifying the location of the COMMAND.COM file or an alternate command interpreter.

Hi Patricia. I tried putting in that line, but I get a syntax error with it
in. Is xxM the number of megs of ram I type, so if I have 128 megs I would
type: append="mem=128M" or append="mem=128" or literally append="mem=xxM"?
I have tried it a bunch of ways and it is still a syntax error.

If you're lucky, something about the way you did these changes just
resulted in a bit of confusion on Windows' part, which you can correct
by booting with your Windows 98 emergency floppy (you DID create one,
didn't you?), verifying that C: is the Win98 partition, and typing "SYS
C:". You should then be able to reboot and get either Windows or Linux.
If you're unlucky, your juggling has seriously hosed your Windows
partition, and you'll need to reinstall Windows.

I may be wrong, but I was based my finding from Configure.help inside
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/. Anyway, we got the message across, Linux doesn't

If you are using, or would like to use, a graphical login screen then check out the
gdm package (Gnome Display Manager) which is an xdm like application that by

Boot your system with a bootable floppy drive containing fdisk.
At the A:> prompt issue the following command:
fdisk /mbr
This will restore your Master Boot Record to its original condition
and Linux will disappear.

Subject: Help in setting up a simple DNS configuration
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 23:32:16 GMT
Here is my situation.
I have a static IP from my ISP(ADSL service). Let's say the hostname is:
myhost.myisp.com
My ISP said that all DNS request for sub-domain under my site, will be
forwarded to my site. (myhost.myisp.com).
I don't have multiple external visible machines. What I want to do is
simply resolve all the request for sub-domain under my site to my only
one machine (myhost.myisp.com). For example, www.myhost.myisp.com and
mail.myhost.myisp.com to myhost.myisp.com.
What is the simplest way to set up this ?
Currently, DNS is running locally, but not really used. Is there any
easy way to set up the configuration so that I don't have to set up the
DNS rules, but use only /etc/hosts to resolve ?
If I have to set up DNS, can you give a little detailed example ?
Thanks in advance.
