I am having a problem with the install regarding my SCSI adapter. The
adapter chipset is an Adaptec 7xxx chipset that is built into this mother
board.

Autoprobe doesn't see it and I can't figure out what module options I need
to enter to make it see it.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

By adding the option "user" in the list of options for the floppydrive
in the configuration file /etc/fstab, any user will be able to mount and
unmount the floppy drive at will.

No special permissions or constructions required. Simply "mount /floppy"
or "umount /floppy" will work for any user. Look at the manual pages
"man fstab" and "man mount" for complete instructions for other options.

# /etc/fstab
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options>               <dump>  <pass>
/dev/fd0        /floppy       auto   defaults,user,noauto       0      0

Ok, here's my question:
Is there any known issue with Linux packages and file systems
getting corrupted?

I've got:
Slackware 7.1, kernel 2.2.16, Samba, Apache, PSQL,
and a host of other things. It's on a UPS, so
I'm fairly sure it's not a power issue, and I know
it's not improper shutdown.
Every couple of weeks, I do a fsck and e2fsck, and it
comes back with illegal inodes, invalid DTime values,
and a host of other problems.

I repeatedly run e2fsck and fsck to repair the system.
When it's back up, everything is great for a while.
(i.e. I can re-check the FS, and have no problems)
But after a few weeks, it's bad again.

I keep my backups current, but I'm still nervous.

Are there any known packages that may be causing this?
(I use midnight Commander A LOT!)
The machine NEVER has a kernel panic and halts. It's
only during reboots (or the occasional console message
about a bad inode somewhere) that the FS shows up as bad.

Any thoughts or ideas in tracking down the problem
would be appreciated.

Subject: fyi, Promise FastTrack w/ SMP seems to work
Date: 1 May 2001 22:21:27 GMT

As we rejoin the saga, I continue to build my new PC. I bought a
SuperMicro P6DBE motherboard a few months ago as they approached
obsolesence, and pair of 800 MHz PIIIs with 100MHz FSB. I put 512M ECC
memory in the box, but stayed with my existing ATA/33 HD(!).

Well, the guys at The Duke of URL(1) said that the Promise ATA/100 RAID
controller worked under Linux (red hat 7) now, so I figured it was time to
balance out my system. I bought two 30G Maxtor 7200RPM drives ($125 ea)
and the Promise controller ($129 at fry's. $99 elsewere, but out of
stock).

I had a scary moment when the kernel paniced on the driver Duke pointed
to, but luckily someone had put a pointer to the SMP version in the Duke
message boards ... and I'm up and typing through it now.

"Bonnie" is a simple disk benchmark(2), results for my old K6-233, 64M,
and ATA/33 were:

    -------Sequential Output-------- ---Sequential Input-- --Random--
    -Per Char- --Block--- -Rewrite-- -Per Char- --Block--- --Seeks---
 MB K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU  /sec %CPU

My Dual PIII, 512M, and ATA/33

    -------Sequential Output-------- ---Sequential Input-- --Random--
    -Per Char- --Block--- -Rewrite-- -Per Char- --Block--- --Seeks---
 MB K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU  /sec %CPU

And now the Dual PIII, 512M, and the Promise at RAID-0

    -------Sequential Output-------- ---Sequential Input-- --Random--
    -Per Char- --Block--- -Rewrite-- -Per Char- --Block--- --Seeks---
 MB K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU  /sec %CPU

I don't know if I'm getting everything out of it that I should ... but
it does seem to go faster.

I assume you down loaded both cd's.

I had problems, not yours, found out I had a bad download.

Went back to the site, re-downloaded, did a, md5sum iso_name_here
and verified they matched the md5sums from the site.

Install went in with no problems.

Having a problem getting the kernel on boot to initialise two ethernet cards (one for

Initialising eth0
Delaying initialisation

Then thats all that happens with regards to the ethernet cards.

What could be the problem??

are you using NFS or NIS? pretty much the same question.

> The server is running the basics:
>   named

BIND is a "basic" if the machine really is a name server for a domain, or
if you (like me) really want to run a caching-only nameserver for some
reason. that latter may or may not be such a bright idea, depending on
circumstances; consider running DJB's dnscache if you're not
authoritative for some domain (i know i should run it, my bad).

learning how to manage this beast is definitely called for, if you're
going to keep it; if you don't need it badly enough to browse through the
cricket book, you probably don't need it badly enough to keep running it.

>   httpd

are you serving webpages to somebody? more importantly: are there
networks you explicitly are *not* serving webpages to? firewall those off
from your port 80. minimum privileges.

>   wu-ftp (xinetd)

are you serving files over FTP to somebody? this is not a "basic". most
fileserving situations these days are HTML files being served by Apache;
situations where a real live FTP server is actually needed are getting
rare.

>   finger (xinetd)

does anybody *really* need to finger your box? it was never all that
necessary to begin with, and most people online these days probably don't
even know the protocol exists. it's a little bit more work to ssh in and
do a "who", but is it really enough much more work to justify keeping a
service running that's good for, well, nothing else?

>   telnet (xinetd)

SHUT THIS DOWN NOW. sorry for the rudeness, but given that you have ssh
running, there is *no* justification for a telnetd. it's just not worth
the risk - it's almost as bad a thing to run as the r* commands. there
are decent ssh clients for MSWin around, and if there aren't for the Mac,
then that would just about rule out the Mac for networked shell usage
IMAO. sorry, but telnet should Just Plain Die(tm).

>   ssh
>   qmail (tcpserver)

qmail's a better thing than sendmail, to be sure.

>   cucipop

you have people reading mail from your server using POP? well, you did
say it was a server, so i won't complain a huge deal...

> When I kill rpc.statd, everything seems to run okay. However, following

that's because it's started in the rc scripts. uninstall that entire RPM
if you want to really get rid of it.

If you got both iso images, you are probably trying to boot from the wrong
one. Or your downloads got corrupted. md5sum is you friend.

The driver (module) for the card is not loaded. You have to configure it
correctly (put a 'alias eth0 modulename' line in /etc/modules.conf).
Perhaps your distro has some gui tool to configure networking.

You are missing some things. After you build your new kernel, and you
should do this in /usr/src because anything you do later while using this
kernel will be looking there.

Put the kernel source file into /usr/src.

# rm linux     It's a symlink to linux-2.2.16
# bzip2 -dc linux-2.4.X.tar.bz2 | tar xf -
# mv linux linux-2.4.X
# ln -s linux-2.4.X linux
# cd linux/scripts
# ./patch-kernel
# cd ..
# make xconfig ,etc yada, yada, yada

# cp System.map /boot/System.map-2.4.X
# cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.X

Now edit /etc/lilo.conf and get some of the proper stuff in there which
Slackware omits - my ONE serious problem with Slack. This one is from
RedHat, but the guts remain the same:

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
lba32
default=linux

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.4
        label=linux
        read-only
        root=/dev/hda6

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.2-2
        label=old
        read-only
        root=/dev/hda6

other=/dev/hda1

        label=dos

other=/dev/hda2
        label=FreeBSD

Hi again, I think I know how to install it correctly for you. Try this.
Try going into the "Text Installation" rather then the Graphical
Installation at the boot up screen. Then go through the setup process,
and when you get the the partitions setup, go into FDISK and modify your
partions so they all have a label (such as /boot, /, and your swap
partition). And make sure you have all 3 partitions (/boot. /, Linux
Swap) !! That is all I had to do and it installed correctly for me. I
don't know if it will work for you, but it worked for me. So try that.

Sorry man, I can not help you with this problem. Because I am
experiencing the same problem as you are, so I hope someone writes us back
and can help us.  Thanks!

Subject: grub default values
Date: Wed, 02 May 2001 00:50:35 GMT

    I'm trying to get GRUB (Grand Unified Boot Loader) to boot my linux
partition automatically. I am able to boot from a command line at boot
time, but I want to reboot my machine remotely and have it come up with
a default OS (linux).
    Here is what I do:
1. untarring grub
2. configure (no parameters), make, make install
3. grub-install /dev/hda
4. (as root) grub
5. grub prompt> install (hd0,4)/boot/grub/stage1 d (hd0)
(hda0,4)/boot/grub/stage2 p (hd0,4)/boot/grub/menu.1st

*error or bad stage1/stage2 file*

    I had gotten a warning when doing "configure" and "make". The
warnings had somethig to do with pointers, but I am not able to get a
log to attach (its on a machine that is not connected to a network).
I've done everything that I think has to be done. If I can resolve this
error, I will be over a major hump. Has anyone had this problem?
