I'm fairly new to this too but i'll explain as best as possible
(hopefully this will be a start to paying off my ever growing debt to
the linux community)
1 Pop in your RH CD
2 It will ask you where to install Linux to, select the 2nd partition
(don't forget a swap partition too)
3 Let the install do it's business
4 it will ask you if you want to make a boot disk, i would just to be
safe
5 reboot, LILO (LInux LOader) should come up with the boot: prompt.
type linux to boot linux, windows to boot windows (it might be called
dos instead) I have seen a graphical LILO with RH7 this is very easy
to use so i won't explain it
6 That's all there is to it (i think)
good luck
all for now,

I had something similar happen with one of my machines. It would
try to boot, but the hard drive would run and run but no Linux.
The problem is that, for whatever reason, Grub won't work on this
machine, and Mdk installs Grub by default. So I installed in
expert mode (it's not that difficult despite the grim warnings the
install program issues) and used LILO instead. No problemo. The
new Lilo even has a menu to choose the OS from. I see no reason
now to use the more complicated Grub.

'make xconfig' in the X window under root account in the /usr/src/linux

First see if you have /etc/pcmcia and then check /var/log/messages when
you booted with the card to see if cardmgr loads and recognized anything
about it. If you get 2 high beeps that is good. Anything else like a
high and low beep means something is wrong. You might need a newer
pcmcia-cs (especially if it includes or you use a pc card modem).
>2. How should I install the driver for any PCMCIA card that is slotted in ?
Once it is recognized, all you have to do is set up eth0 with linuxconf
(or netcfg in X). However, when I updated pcmcia-cs, it no longer seemed
to come up automatically, so I had to 'ifup eth0' (I added an rc.local
routine to do that if my card module was loaded).
>3. If everything is fine, can I have hot swap of PCMCIA card just like
>Win98/2000 ? How should I stop the driver before the eject the card?
Once everything is set up, all you should have to do is boot with the card
or insert it at any time (and maybe do the 'ifup eth0' if necessary).
However, if you are going to go into suspend or remove the card it is a
good idea to eject the card first ('cardctl status' to see which slot it
is in, then 'cardctl eject 0' or whichever). See 'man cardctl' for other
options.

Date: Sat, 02 Dec 2000 01:59:02 +0000
Hi Everybody,
I get the following boot messages:
Dec 2 01:37:26 locutus kernel: parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778)
[SPP,ECP,ECPPS2]
Dec 2 01:37:26 locutus kernel: parport0: detected irq 7; use procfs to

Dec 2 01:37:31 locutus kernel: parport0: Printer, Minolta PagePro 8L
Dec 2 01:37:31 locutus kernel: lp0: using parport0 (polling)
The thing is, I was able to set up apsfilter using ljet2p and printed
the test page without any problems, but when I print a webpage for
example (with Netscape), it starts printing, but unfortunately not the
page itself but rather a description of the page or at least some
gibberish that looks like a description of the page.
What could be the problem ? BTW, I am using RH 7.
Thanks in advance for every kind of help. I appreciate it.

Hi All,
I had problems compiling a custom kernel for RH7, so I downloaded Kernel
2.2.17 and it compiled (using kgcc) without problems and ran. Then, of
course I had to mess things up, I downloaded and installed
glibc-2.2-5.i686.rpm. Now, since I forgot to compile some features into
the kernel (sigh!), I had to do it all over again, but since then, when
I try to boot, I get a message saying either something about a "CRC
Error" or that there is no input data. This happens right after the
"Uncompressing kernel bla bla ............................."-message.
Does anyone have any ideas about this or where I could enlighten myself ?
Thanks in advance for your help.

That's the way it goes. You just gotta download all the packages it tells
tells you it depends on and install those. BIG pain in teh ass. I just
updated gnome the other day. All i wanted to update was gnome and I ended
up having to update 25+ packages total due to depencies.

Subject: help newbie with configuring squid
Date: 2 Dec 2000 04:55:03 GMT
Hi everyone,
I am running Linux RH 6.1 (kernel 2.2.17) to connect my small LAN to the
internet via masquerading and ipchains. Everything is working perfectly.
Now, I would like to implement transparent web-caching server on the Linux
box to improve the speed for users on my network (I do understand the pros
and cons of transparent proxying). However, I could not find any
information at http://www.squid-cache.org in implmentating transparent
caching with squid. The reason I like to implement transparent proxying
(or caching) is because I do not want to mess with configuring client
browsers. I consider myself a linux newbie even though I am pretty good
at recompiling the kernel and setting up my own mail server using sendmail.
If anyone has experience with configuring transparent caching with squid,
please show me how to do it.
Regards,

I was trying to install Red Hat 6.2 on an old 486 33MHz I got for cheap.
Unfortunately, after partitioning, selecting packages to install, and
formatting the partitions, it crashed with the message: "Abnormal
termination -- signal 11" or something like that. I have no idea what's
wrong. The computer has 32 MB of RAM, an ancient IDE controller as the
primary channel and a Promise EIDE Max II UDMA 33 controller as the
secondary channel controller. hda is 1.2 GB, there is no hdb, hdc is 10
GB, hdd is 50X CD-ROM drive. Secondary Master (hdc) is partitioned as
follows: Extended partition spanning entire drive, hdc5, hdc6, and hdc7
are FAT-16 of maximum size (2GB) as Windows 3.1 is also on this
computer, hdc8 is 127M swap, hdc9 is 50M (/boot), hdc10 is 3.5G (/). Any
help would be appreciated.

Actually,
I was originally trying to install redhat 7 on a Compaq prosignia server,
but there were problems with the SCSI controller to the HD...
I tried multiple methods to no avail, and it was suggested to me that I
might need to compile my own kernel with the appropriate SCSI support...
In the mean time I tried to install Debian GNU 2.2 just for the heck of it,
and it worked (at least in so far as the scsi problem was concerned)...
Unfortunately I havent had any experience with Debian... especially its
package management system...
I am considering trying some other distributions too...
(This box was previously an MS Small Business Server 4.5, and since wiping
it clean I had only been able to install Win98... until today, when Debian
worked)

I have the same problem as far as when then install crashes on me. I think
its definately a graphics problem. I tryed installing Corel with and NVIDIA
GeForce2 GTS card and I got a bunch of garbage on the screen at the same
point you did.
I went ahead and swaped out the card for an old Voodoo Banshee card I had,
and low and behold, it went fine. I could see that the installer starts X
after the 'starting graphical installation'. I'm asuming you and I have the
same problem: incompatible graphics sets.
IMHO, its bad design on Corels part to be guessing your video card and not
starting up with a generic vga driver. I downloaded mandrake and the
install went off with out a hitch so I'm sticking with it.

just look at your directories names and they should be self-explanatory

if you read the INSTALL or README files with your tarballs they almost
always explain where installed files are placed and most of the time u

The aumix program adjusts the settings of an audio mixing device.
I'm not sure what is broken, it seems to be unable to access the
audio mixer. If your audio is working ok, and you don't need to
use the aumix program then you can ignore this message.
> sending all processes the kill signal..
This is a normal linux shutdown message. The kernel is announcing
the termination of all running processes.
> md: recovery thread got woken up md recovery
> finished md recoveryd(6) flushing signals.
The md recovery daemon is part of the linux RAID support which
is included in the stock kernel of most distributions, its job is to
monitor the RAID array and automatically activate spare drives
in the event of a hard disk failure. It has gone into "sleep" mode
and had to be "woken up" so it could exit properly (close files,
flush signals, etc.). My system also does this and I consider it
normal. If you have no RAID array then you could recompile the
kernel excluding RAID support to stop getting the message (and free
up the few resources md recovery uses)
Hope this helps,
Bluster

Date: Sat, 02 Dec 2000 07:39:47 GMT
I have been running Red Hat 6.2 for some time quite successfully on a
Windows 98 peer-to-peer network at the office. I have been able to print to
a network printer just fine and had SAMBA up and running for file access
both ways between the Linux box and Windows 98 machines.
BUT, I got Redhat 7 and installed as an upgrade and everything ahs gone to
pot. I can even access my local Windows partitions of access the floppy
drive, both of which worked fine before.
Here is what I get when I try to mount Windows Drive C: and the floppy
drive...
mount: /dev/hda1 has wrong major or minor number
mount: /dev/fd0 has wrong major or minor number
Fortunately, I can still read the CDRom OK and the Linux partitions are
accessible.
Further, my network access which also worked fine and loaded and started as
part of boot up now does not activate. Here is what the command "ifup eth0"
gets...
Delaying eth0 initialization.
HELP -- I am a novice with Linux. If it helps, here are selected lines from
the boot up log (I edited out lines that looked "correct" to save space in
this message).
Thanks in advance,
