There is a dummy network module.
You may be interested in using traffic shaping, there should be a module
for
that as well as a user space configuration tool. Look for a HOWTO on

Thanks to everyone that helped me out. The problem was Linux wasn't
recognizing my Promise ULTRA 66 ATA controller. I switched some stuff
around and it seems to recognize the drive. Thanks

Subject: plip problems
Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 00:22:02 GMT
I'm trying to run a plip connection between my desktop and my laptop,
and am having a lot of difficulty, and after trying for 3 days to make
this work, am asking for pointers to assistance.
The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite T2115CS, a '486 box with 320MB disk,
24MB RAM, no CDROM, no network card, running Slakware 4.0 (kernel
2.2.6).
The desktop is a 166 Pentium wihth 64MB RAM running a stock RedHat 6.1,
kernel 2.2.12, with modules for lp, plip, parport, etc.
Using those two setups, the only way to get the machines to talk is to
boot the desktop to runlevel 1, modprobe plip, ifconfig plip0 desktop
pointopoint laptop up, then boot the laptop using a special bootdisk
running kernel 2.0.36, modprobe plip, ifconfig plip1 laptop pointopoint
desktop, route add desktop dev plip1; at this point, I can sometimes get
ping to work. I have tried to make the desktop run the nfs demon so I
can mount the desktop cdrom for the laptop; sometimes it works,
sometimes it doesn't; sometimes when I try to start the nfs demons,
I get errors from the rpc.nfsd about not enough buffer space.
I know it's possible to do this; this is how I installed Slakware 4.0 on
the laptop last year (using RH6.0 on the desktop). I'd like to upgrade
to Slakware 7.0.
Any pointers???
Thanks,
hank

I'm running Netscape 4.7 on RH 6.0. I noticed in the inbox, and all of
the newsgroups, that the time of the incoming items is about 4 hours
ahead of local time (Eastern Daylight time). I already checked in
linuxconf under date and time, and made sure the "GMT" box was not
checked. Am I missing something? Local time reads correctly on the bar
at the bottom of the screen...
Thanks in advance,

Also worth mentioning: SuSE had a live-filesystem CD as part of their
CD set in the 5.x days. Nowadays it is dropped due to space-contraints
I think, BUT; it is still available for download off their ftp site,
at least I think I saw it there (iso). This will give you a really
full-fledged linux dist, running off a ramdisk and the CD as live
filesystem. Neat.

Anyone know where I can find a list of Linux compatable hardware.
I'm going to set up and older PC ( 75mhz) as a Linux system and I
need to know what works and what doesn't. I also need to get some
more components for it.

Check /usr/src/linux/drivers/sound, to see if all the compiled sound drivers (i.e.
sound.o, sb.o, etc) should be there.
Check /lib/modules/2.3.99-pre9/sound to see if the compiled sound drivers are there
and if they are the same or different (check the time & date and size of the files).
If they are missing or different copy them over.
# cp /usr/src/linux/drivers/sound/*.o /lib/modules/2.3.99-pre9/sound/
Hopefully, this will get sndconfig to work properly.
I think your ESS1930 chip is an esssolo1 compatible chip. Try selecting esssolo1 if
sndconfig works..
If this does not work, you might have try another sound driver

Check the path to glibc2. And compare the path pointing to glibc2 in the
config.h and Makefile and the actual path where SuSE put the glibc2.
Do a "whereis glibc2" (without the quotation marks from the prompt) will
tells you where glibc2 is located, then, edit the config.h, and Makefile
to match the path.

Hi all,
Running on an HP Omnibook 6000 w/ DVD rom. Slackware 7.1 (kernel

NOTE: have had the same setup on other machines (eg., HP Omnibook 4150,

I can only run kscd as root. My /dev/hdc and /dev/cdrom are chmod'd

pawn:~$ ls -l /dev/hdc
brwxrwxrwx 1 root disk 22, 0 Jul 13 18:19 /dev/hdc
I'm not sure what the preceeding "b" is all about. Perhaps that's the
problem?
Comments / advice / input appreciated ... preferrably via email.

Subject: linux serial mouse problem
Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 01:41:21 GMT
I have a junky machine that had Win 3.1, but I wanted to make it into a
linux machine instead. Everything goes fairly smoothly except for the
mouse. The serial mouse does not work. In the install, it was detected
as a PS/2 mouse, but my machine is a baby AT and doesn't have PS/2
ports. I chose generic serial mouse, but it didn't help. I ran
mouseconfig and chose nearly everything on the list and I still get
nothing. It is actually a pretty old logitech mouse, but it worked fine
in Win 3.1 and when I installed Win 98 after this failed attempt.
I'm reluctant to buy another mouse because it would cost more than the
entire setup and I only did this to learn more about linux. Plus, I
could let my little cousin use it instead of letting her use my P3
machine. Whoa, this is long-winded. Any help would be great.

First, disable Plug 'n' Pray from bios.
3C509 NIC works fine with SuSE since SuSE 6.0. With SuSE 6.4, just start
YaST and you'll be done in no time.
FYI. 3C509 works fine under SuSE Linux, Slackware, FreeBSD, OpenBSD,
NetBSD. I've tried these without any problem.

Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 22:08:31 -0400
I had RH 6.0 installed and working fine on my system except for my Windows
specific HP printer.
I purchased Corel WordPerfect Office 2000 Deluxe for Linux which comes with
the Corel Linux (Debian). I have installed this version of Linux 4 times
allowing Linux to take over my second drive (6.4WD) and also setting the
partitions myself. It sets up my display at 1024x768x16 which is a little
too difficult to see on my monitor. After changing the display to an
800x600 true color display and rebooting I have the same problem. The OS
seems to be loading just fine until you get to the command prompt login and
then the screen begins flashing. I've found that if I'm quick enough to
type my login one letter at a time while I can see the display that what I
type appears on the screen as well. This is no help however because after
entering my login and password this way I am still unable to access any
functions thereafter.
If I do not change the display setting the OS will boot fine at least
several times before it fails.
I've re-installed the RedHat OS because even the 5.2 version recognizes and
correctly sets up my video card (Viper 330 NVIDIA 8 Meg) and monitor (NEC
MultiSync E500) where as the Corel (Debian) lists both of these devices as
unknown.
I realize this isn't much help to you but it does indicate the problem most
likely resides in some other component than your keyboard.

"Clock skew" is a new one for me. Log the output of your recompile:
cd /usr/src/linux; cp .config /root/.config.bak.0
make mrproper > /root/mrproper.log 2>&1
cp /root/.config.bak.0 ./.config

If it still doesn't work you may want to resort to reinstalling the
kernel rpms and doing the above (prob. unecessary). Use rpm --checksig
first to verify their integrity. (Or, I suppose you could rpm --checksig
and then rpm --verify to make sure the current install's still ok.)

Been there, done that. Installed *four* 60GB IDE drives recently in a
single machine under Linux (fortunately without having to mess with
Windows). Now, try repeating the above append command four times (hda,
hdc, hde, hdg) ... the kernel option line will exceed 79 characters and
LILO will shamelessly chop it off at position 79. I had to patch and
recompile LILO by hand to make it work. (This was RedHat 6.2's LILO.)
Took me the better part of an afternoon to figure it out ... fun, fun!
Incidentally, if you boot from SCSI (or from a smaller IDE disk), but
never from the 60GB drive, you can usually tell the BIOS to ignore the
large IDE drives (drive type=none, or so). With this, your system
should happily boot, even with a drive present that the BIOS cannot
handle. When booting, both Windows and Linux will detect the large
disks on their own regardless of the BIOS settings. In this way, even
if you can't upgrade your BIOS, you can get rid of the kludgy MaxBlast
software. I think you only need MaxBlast if you must boot from the
large drive and your BIOS can't handle the capacity.

install this driver, along with Ghostscript, before you can attempt to
configure a print queue which uses it.
(Actually, the lm1100 is one of the drivers I'm using to beta test my
new setup system, but you apparently aren't in the mood for beta
software).

I don't actually know what TurboLinux ships for their printer setup.
A TL fellow mailed me recently and mentioned that their printer setup
tools are somewhat broken in the recent version for some class or
other of printer.
In any case, no distribution that I know of ships with operable
support for Lexmark inkjets, although such support is now available
from free software.

Oh, what the heck. Try following the directions at
http://www.linuxprinting.org/lpd-doc.html and see where you end up.
Mail me for help if you get stuck.

There are a number of good introductory books out there, and gobs of
HOWTOs and Guides from the Linux Documentation Project. The answers
are in there, somewhere...

Configure your print spooler to accept Postscript, and specify the
proper command (typically `lpr -Pqueuename') in Netscape's print
dialog.
For information on how to set up your spooler, see your distribution's
documentation or the Printing HOWTO.

Subject: A question about a hard drive and RAM upgrade.
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 22:29:40 -0400
Hi
I have a Dell Optiplex GX1 system (P-450)with 64 MB RAM and 4.3 GB hard
disk.
As was inevitable, I am feeling the need to increase both.
Now, comes the hard part : I have two partitions on my hard disk - one
for Windows 98 (for kid stuff) and one for Linux (for serious work). The
hard disk is split roughly even between the two.
If I go ahead and attach a 10 GB hard disk in addition to my 4.3 GB
hard
disk, how would I make use of it ? I mean what I want is to shift the
entire Windows OS to a portion of that hard disk, partition it, and claim
the rest of the space for Linux as well as the space vacated on the
original hard disk.
If this is possible (sounds possible to me), how do I do it ?
I expect the RAM addition - 128 MB (in addition to 64 MB I already
posess) to be relatively uncomplicated. Tell me if there are some issues
involved here.
What is the typical bill for these additions ?
Thanks in advance,
Madhusudan Singh.
PS : I would appreciate an email copy of your response.
