I don't think that this is the problem - at least not on my system.
I'm also getting the mmap error for /dev/zero, but shmmax is about
32M on my system, and varying the fs arg (even to 8k) doesn't help.
And /dev/zero exists and seems fine. The program author mentioned
a sysV shm fs on 2.3 and later kernels, but I'm still using 2.2.
I wonder if this is a library mismatch - I think the problem started
when I upgraded to the latest glibc (2.2) libraries. Anybody else notice
the same thing? Anybody using cdrecord on Mandrake 8?
Doug
fwiw - my system is Mandrake 7.2 and I noticed the problem both
with the stock kernel 2.2.17 and the more recent 2.2.19.

7.1 was rather easy to install on my computer. I have one HD for win98 and
one for linux. The only part that I had some problems with was how to get
the linux partitions right. I finally found out that the swap partition
should be at 512MB (twice my memory) and filesystem the rest. I marked it
1MB and growable that takes the rest of the drive. I guess that I got it
right because I got linux up and running.

With the book there where 2 cd:s I didn't try to install from them I just
read the book. I downloaded RH 7.1 instead and burned 2 cd:s from the ISO:s.
I'm not sure if both cd:s are needed to install 6.2 I guess there are others
around that have tried it that can answer your question.

Subject: Redhat7-1 on 2nd physical drive & SystemCommander 2000
Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 11:37:46 +1000
Foremost,
thank you Anna and Paul Lew for your previous feedback.
After consulting the various help /doc files within SC2000, and all other
relevant docs, none seem to relate to my unique set up. Most documents
give me instruction on loading linux as a second OS on the first PHYSICAL
Hard disk drive.
I need to hear back from someone who has been using system commander with
linux on a primary second physical HDD.
My setup is as follow : (SC2000 detects the new linux partition on startup,
but will not boot to linux ?)
first IDE channel (45GB HDD): hda0 (NTFS:W2K:primary) ; hda1 (FAT32:
WinME:primary)
second IDE channel (6GB HDD): Primary Linux = hda0(/boot) ; hda1(/SWAP) ;
hda2(/) ; hda5(FAT32:extended logical)
The combined two primary partitions : W2K and Fat32 is working perfectly
with system commander 2000. So I wish not to change or add any partitions to
the first physical drive if possible.
My research have shown that LILO must be installed in order to boot from the
hard drive (as far as RH7-1 is concerned).
So, bearing that in mind the install process reported an error that /boot is
not residing on the first 1024 "section" of the 1st physical drive. What
this means is that I now have to resize the W2K to accommodate a small
"/boot" partition for linux to startup.
It appears that it is "impossible" to boot up an OS from a second physical
drive not containing the MBR ????
Is this a bios limitation ? Does anyone have a work around, such that I do
not have to put the "/boot" on the 1st hard drive?
I'm now entertaining the idea of making the linux partitons, logical instead
of primary ... will this lead to my desired boot-up from SC2000 (can I make
a logical partition on the second physical drive? ) ??
I'd like to hear back from someone who has taken this path before. i.e.
installing RH7 on a primary partition located on the second IDE channel, so
that I can plan my next action plan.
Thanks all.

i have to use the pump command (I'm using @home). Now is there any way to
get my computer to run this command at startup (and how do you do it)? Also,
broadband seems to run very slow (no more than 10kbp/s), and netscape is

Check out www.linmodems.org. Lucent modems should be supported under linux.
Are you sure you don't have an MWave modem? They are now recently supported
under linux.
IBM is showing its 1 billion dollar commitment to linux by having all of it
products include thinkpads and modems
work under linux.

I think I have the same problem. What happens (at least in my case) is
that the player actually plays the first fraction of a second, then
stops playing. This happens with several different CD player apps (ccdp
gcd cdplay cdplayer_app, etc.). The volume IS up - if I play a CD that
has a loud sound at the very beginning, I hear the beginning of the
first note. If I play a game, the sound is appropriately loud ;^)
As for what CD drive, I haven't taken it apart to look, but the machine
is a brand new Dell Dimension 8100, and dmesg says:
Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 32x/32x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.12
so it presumably knows about it. In fact, I can mount and read CD-ROMs
just fine (haven't tried writing anything yet). CDs play just fine on
the same box under that *other* OS, but I don't want to have to boot
that to play CDs!
Any advice appreciated.

We must have the same configuration! I too have an Epson 740. The
problem is not with the printer, however, Even doing "echo hello >
/dev/lp0" appears to succeed from the standpoint of completing with no
errors, but no bits come out of the parallel port!
Again, the printer works fine under that *other* OS, so I don't think
it's a hardware problem. dmesg reports:

IMHO, which doesn't count for a whole damn hill of buffalo chips, but
all the distros RH, Mdk etc, that jumped the gun trying to get a
distribution out before the latest Kernel and all the improvements that
have really been made in the Linux world from a non-commercial
direction, and leaving a bad taste in the mouths of a lot of new comers
and old hands to boot, into the sweaty grubby hands of all the new wave
of Linux users that do things like call themselves Debian users etc.
while posting with a Microsoft product, are mostly broken pieces of shit
coming out of the box. Distros that is. ;-)
The source from kde.org for kde 2.1.1 along with the latest qt, builds
just fine on a RH 6.1 or 2 or for that matter, I just built it on a
little abbreviated Peanut distro after I added a compiler just fine
today.

The driver (module) for the card is not loaded. You have to configure it
correctly (put a 'alias eth0 modulename' line in /etc/modules.conf).
Perhaps your distro has some gui tool to configure networking.

you've got grotty hardware somewhere.
replace the flatcable with a new one.
if the problems persist move slowly to more expensive hardware (IDE
controler, memory, motherboard, the like)

Subject: Linux Mouse Problem

Hey all,
When installing Linux, Mandrake or RedHat, I am able to configure my USB
mouse during the pre-install process and it works just fine. However, once
the install is complete, and it re-boots, I have no mouse whatsoever.
This is the same as when I use a standard PS/2 mouse.
