Hi,
I am running RedHat 6.1 and would like to connect to this server using
nfs. For some reason I keep getting this message on that server when
someone is trying to connect (exports file filled in, daemons
restarted):
Dec 6 11:36:57 Mordor rpc.nfsd: nfssvc: Function not implemented
knfsd-1.4.7-7
knfsd-clients-1.4.7-7
are installed, too.
What else could I do to make it work?
Thanks!!

The [OK] at the end of the line means the swapon command *thinks*
it activated the swap ok, so look at the next stuff to load.
> Has anyone experienced anything like this or have any suggestions

I run RH 6.2 so YMMV but...
First at the lilo boot: prompt type
boot: linux emergency
to start the linux kernel *only* without running any
of the normal init scripts, you should get a bash # prompt.
At the emergency mode # prompt look at the /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit
file using the less command.
# less /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit
On my RH 6.2 system this is where swap is activated during boot,
it *should* be the same for v7.0.
Look at the lines after the "swapon -a" command.
Mine looks like this:
<***snip from /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit***>
# Start up swapping.
action "Activating swap partitions" swapon -a
# Set the hostname.
action "Setting hostname ${HOSTNAME}" hostname ${HOSTNAME}
# Set the NIS domain name
if [ -n "$NISDOMAIN" ]; then
action "Setting NIS domain name $NISDOMAIN" domainname $NISDOMAIN
else
domainname ""
fi
<***snip from /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit***>
Also check the files /var/log/dmesg, /var/log/messages, and
/var/log/boot.log for logs of error messages.
You may find more info about what's broken in there.
If you feel adventurous and want to rule out swap problems
then edit rc.sysinit and try commenting out the line with the
"swapon -a" command in rc.sysinit to disable swap activation at boot.
(place a # character at the start of a line to "comment out" the line)
Then reboot into runlevel 3 (full network, *no GUI*) by
typing "linux 3" at the lilo boot: prompt, e.g.
boot: linux 3
if that *does* boot ok then run the "swapon -a" command from the
bash prompt and see if the system hangs, e.g.
# swapon -a
Don't forget to remove the # you added to /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit
(UN-"comment out" the "swapon -a" line) when you're done.
warning: loading the GUI X11 without swap active may not
work unless you have *tons* of RAM.
That should get you started :)
Hope this helps,
Bluster

Subject: Unable to partition disk in RedHat 7.0
Date: Fri, 08 Dec 2000 17:02:45 GMT
Hi,
I have a large (40GB) IDE hard disk drive. I've put Win98 on the first 20GB,
and want to put RH 7.0 on the rest. There are two Win98 partitions on the
disk -- one FAT32 primary and one FAT32 extended, which has four logical
partitions in it. I believe that I can put only two additional partitions for
Linux. I wanted those to be the swap partition and one big extended partition,
where I can define as many logical partitions as I need (/boot, /home, /usr,
etc.). When I run fdisk, I am told that I can create only partitions 3 and 4
(since 1 and 2 already exist - those are the FAT32 partitions Win98 uses).
I created one primary partition and made it type 82 (swap). I can create one
big partion filling the rest of the drive, but how do I create the logical
partitions in it? When I say I want to create a logical partition, I'm told
that there are no free blocks left! At any time during fdisk, whenever I say
I want a logical partition, I'm told the same thing -- no free blocks!
The Linux Partition HOWTO seems to imply that Linux should create the last
partition (number 4) as an extended partiton by default. But the fdisk in
RH 7.0 creates it as a regular (83) partition. Could that be my problem? And
how do I fix it?
Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
George

Hello
The server of my network mount 2 nfs partitions on all computers

server:/home nfs .....
But, when I make a nfs restart, ( /etc/rc.d/init/nfs restart ), the

halted and I must reboot the system. I don't understand this problem.
Nevertheless, the deamon nfs is installed. Is it the kernel version not
updated ?
Any help will be appreciated.

Changing color depth can change frequencies that drive the chip and
monitor (not always) so could in turn effect display artifacts.
Next time you are in X try each of the function keys. F7 should
be the X default and F1 the X terminal (messages). The others
will give terminals (command line logins).

Hi,
Just set up sendmail on a linux client and am able to receive/send mail
fine. However, when sending to my own domain, I always must specify
...@mail.<mydomain> to be able to send email. If I send directly to
persons to ...@<mydomain> in my domain, then they are refused with a
'user unknown' message.
Does anyone have some idea what to put in my sendmail.cf to fix this
routing prob?

I have actually never measured it, also disk access "feels" slightly
faster. For me it's enough to know that it is likely to increase
speed, and then I go with the advantage of having infinite (tm)
diskspace.
Thanks for your thoughts,

thanks for the reply...although my menu.lst was wrong...and i should be able
to get that figured out...
my real problem is that i cannot even get grub to install on a floppy in the
first place.
when i did my installation..of Mandrake7.2 i did not opt for any bootloader.
i am able to boot via a floppy.
when i go to drak-conf i get no option for grub...only lilo
and i cannot use it as my installation is past the 1024th cyl
here is what i've tried (at root of course):
1) if i just did this at the command prompt:
grub-install /dev/fd0
i was able to get stage1 installed on a floppy but nothing else
and yes, i know this is not the correct procedure.
but if i follow the instructions as i see them i cannot install on a floppy
at the bash prompt i've tried:
grub-install /boot/grub/stage1 d (fd0) /boot/grub/stage2 p
/boot/grub/menu.lst
pause
i get an error message of:
invalid device request
if at the bash prompt i first type grub
then get
grub>
and try
install (and then enter same data as above)
i get the same error
so i am obviously referring to fd0 incorrectly
but even if i try to refer to it as /dev/fd0 i still get the same
invalid device request
so i think i may be pretty close...but still need a bit of help
please!

Subject: LILO gets stuck at LI
Date: Fri, 08 Dec 2000 17:47:33 GMT
Am a newbie that just installed Redhat 6.2. When I tried to install
LILO the computer booted and the LI part of LILO came up and then got
seriously stuck. I ultimately had to fdisk /MBR to be able to access
Windows 2000 again.
I have an 9GB SCSI hard drive that has Windows 2000 on it and I just
installed a 36GB EIDE drive which has LINUX on it. I want to be able
to dual boot to these two systems.
BTW, when I go through Disk Druid, it let me partition the new drive
just fine and the SCSI drive also showed up. A couple of screens later
when the LILO configuration screen came up, there is no sign of the
SCSI drive at all. A friend walked me through trying to add LILO
manually and that is when we got stuck.
Any ideas?

In general, of the four entries in a standard partition
table, only one can be of type extended. This is in general.
You could try, however, making that fourth partition a type
85 Linux extended and see what happens. I don't think this
will work, by default, though. You can try Mikhail Ranish's
Partition Manager to see if this will allow you to get
around this restriction. It's been some time since I've used
it or looked at it so I'm not certain any longer. In any eve
nt, Mikhail's pages are an excellent reference on
partitioning and you should read them for your own
edification.Access the page through:

to configure it using _sndconfig_.
Steps...
1. bring up a terminal window (konsole or xterm)
2. type "su -c sndconfig" (and hit <enter>)
3. enter your root password (and hit <enter>)
4. sndconfig will start
5. follow the sndconfig's prompts...
If the setup is successful, you will hear Linus Torvalds explaining how he
