Hello,
I want to recycle an old 486 for use as router and firewall. I only have
a HD of 127 Mo. After deselecting almost all the packages I get a size
for all packages of 109 Mo. But the install stills says i'm missing 8 Mo
on the disk.
I chose Networking station and Utilities only for package selection. Then
I manually deselected all packages.
Can I get rid of the Utilities package or is it really needed ?
Thanks in advance,

(Note, I work on GCC, not on Linux, so take what I say about Linux as being
personal opinions).
Assuming you built the USB controller as a module, I believe what you want to
do is edit /etc/modules.conf (it might be under the old name of
/etc/conf.modules) and delete the following line:
alias usb-controller usb-ohci
That would allow you to still load the USB controller by hand, using modprobe.
If you have compiled the USB controller directly into the kernel, you will have
to rebuild the kernel with the USB support either compiled as modules, or not
compiled at all. You probably should remove the lines that refer to the zip
drive from /etc/fstab if they exist.

Anyone know the protocol to this UPS?
I tried a package called 'nut' but it's couldn't talk to
my UPS.
My WIN NT box running belkins software works fine, so I know
the protocol is there.
And I have fun making the WIN NT box and Linux minicom send
characters back and forth. So I know /dev/ttyS0 is working.
That pretty much means hacking the protocol. Unless
someone knows what it is.

is detected i tried using netconfig two set them up. No dice on either card.
RH 5.2 installation gets one card but not the other. I tried this multiple
times and it will work with either card but only one. Then in 5.2 I try
adding it myself by modifying /etc/conf.modules and adding all the info.
Then I modified lilo.conf and ran lilo like some multi-nic web page said to.
The problem when I do ifconfig eth1 it says unknown interface. In a nutshell
my question is ho do I get ifconfig to acknoledge eth1 ??? PLEASE HELP!!

Date: Mon, 07 May 2001 20:41:15 -0400
I am a bit stumped. Here are a few questions that I
have perhaps you can assist me with them.
I am running bind 9.1.0-10 from a fresh Red Hat 7.1 install. When I
issue the command /etc/rc.d.init.d/named start apparently named is
starting because if I do a ps aux | grep named I see five instances of
named running. Now if I do an nslookup using either localhost or
127.0.0.1 as an argument I get a reply that tells me that the name
server is 192.168.1.1 which is the IP of my box on the LAN. However, if
I do an nslookup with a name or IP outside of localhost I get the
following result "connection timed out, no servers could be reached". I
have gone back and changed the owner and group of the named.conf file
and all of the zone files to named. However, I am still getting the
same result. I am not seeing any distinguishable errors in
/var/log/message. The only thing regarding named listed there is that
named is running.
My DNS zone needs are very simple at this point. I have one domain that
I have to be a master for. Basically that is it. I have four other
hosts on the LAN and I need to receive mail for the LAN. So actually
since I want to run a primary server the only zone files that I think I
need is . localhost my domain and the reverse zones for localhost
and my domain. I think where I am most hung up at this point is the dos
and don'ts regarding syntax in version 9.1.0 as a matter of fact I am
not familiar with the syntax at all of version 9.1.0.
Is there anyway you could possible direct me where to find documentation
on the syntax for version 9.1.0 and if at all possible forward me a
barebones sample zone file that I could edit and the reverse file for
that same zone.
This is really driving me up a wall. Any and all assistance is greatly
appreciated.

When selecting the package groups, there is a check box at the bottom that says
"select individual packages" or something similar. If you check this box and
any/none of the groups, when you go to the next page the installer will allow
you to select individual rpms to install.
The packages that are pre-selected will be determined by the groups that you
chose on the previous page. The EVERYTHING install is a very poor choice for an
install. Craft the installed packages to the needs of your system (eg you
probably don't need apache on a desktop workstation, and you probably don't need
X if you are running a file server.) This will save drive space and system
resources.
The most likely reason that the radio button uses less space than the EVERYTHING
install is that some packages are not included in any of the groups. However
they exist for users who want to install and use them. I would guess that the
multitude of mail and news clients are not ALL installed when choosing a group
that includes a mail/news client.
Note: Not every package is displayed when you choose individual packages. The
Base group (needed for any install) is on by default and AFAIK there is no way
to remove them from the install procedure. Most likely you are going to need
those anyway.

Read the Kernel HOW-TO on any of the Linux Documentatin Project sites, for info
on upgrading/compiling the kernel.
http://howto.tucows.com/ works I think.
You will most likely need to create a boot disk that contains the needed kernel
and will allow you to then install from the CD.
If you can't find a kernel precompiled for your hardware, you'll need to
download and compile the source
You can download the kernel source from http://www.kernel.org/ but I recommend
dl'ing from a mirror close to you and with a fast connection. 18MB is quite a
bit of time when the connection is moving at 3KB/s

I'm ready to migrate my Linux System to a new hard drive. One question
I have to answer though:
The current system is a 15Meg /boot partition a swap and everything else
is in one big partition. i will be splitting this up between a number of
different partitions on a different drive. I have created the new
partitions and file-systems. How do I copy the current system onto the
new drive? I can simply "cp" everything.... but I don't think I can do
this from an active file-system. But how do I make it inactive?
Everything is on that drive.
Can I re-mount it read only? How?
Do I need to use a boot disk? What needs to be on the disk?
Should I reboot to single-user mode?
Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

There isn't such a thing where one distribution supports a piece of hardware. Surely
its
about what drivers are available on your system as modules or compiled in the kernel.

Hi, I'm trying to install Debian Potato on an Abit VP6. All of the
drives on it are ATA100, there's a Windows 2K disk, a digital
video disk and a disk I want to install debian linux on.
The drive I want to install on would be /dev/hde. When I insert
the installation CD and reboot it can only see /dev/hda, which is
my windows partition.
I've tried making a boot floppy (a few times, a few different floppies)
from the udma66 kernel but it doesn't work for me. Every boot from
the floppy just hangs before even apparently starting the boot process.
I've done some searching on groups.google.com and it looks like I'm
stuck for the moment. If I swapped /dev/hda with /dev/hde I probably
could do an install if I could get the udma66 boot floppy working.
Does anybody have any advice?

Not entirely true. STL support may be nearly complete (thanks to SGI)
but the standard library isn't. STL is just a part of the standard library
and ostringstream isn't part of STL (it's part of IOStreams). I've been playing with
gcc-2.95.3 ad gcc-3.0pre (from CVS) to test their standard C++ library. It's far
from as good as STLport. I get segfaults when using ostringstreams heavily--
I ran out of time figuring out the minimal test case which reproduces the problem,
mailing them in, waiting for them
to be patched, downloading new versions of the compiler, recompiling
the compiler and the library (1-2 hrs on a fast machine!), repeat. THat's why I
responded earlier
saying "I'm going to save you a lot of time" because 2.95.3 + STLport-4.0 is really
stable & solid.
I did spend a couple weeks chasing a really tricky bug which we were certain was
STLport-4.0 but
actually turned out to be a problem with the run time linker (if you make a C app that
dlopen()s two
shared object files, each of which is linked dynamically gainst STLport shared library,
you get crashes in IOStreams, because the run-time linker doesn't resolve symbols
properly when
it loads the second .so. The main C app (python) specifically does not like havig
RTLD_GLOBAL set
when it dlopen()s the .so's, so it's not surprising we have this behavior (what's
surprising
is that IRIX and Tru64 don't have this "problem". We had to work
around it using LD_PRELOAD-- yecch). But C++ dlls that get loaded
into C programs are fairly esoteric, hopefully not an issue for most programmers.

I also have a Lynksys, which worked for RedHat 7.0 but only after I compiled the

With the new RH7.1 upgrade, when I try to install the tulip driver, this is the
result:
modprobe tulip
/lib/modules/2.4.2-2/kernel/drivers/net/tulip/tulip.o: invalid parameter parm_debug
/lib/modules/2.4.2-2/kernel/drivers/net/tulip/tulip.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.2-2/kernel/drivers/net/tulip/tulip.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.2-2/kernel/drivers/net/tulip/tulip.o: insmod tulip failed
Which means it isn't going to work.

The OP should check his /etc/ppp/options file and make sure that the
line which says "noauth" is not commented out. If you don't have
"noauth" somewhere in that file, then pppd will require the peer to
authenticate itself. This is not what you want if you are just dialing
in to your ISP.
(I could swear I posted a reply to this guy's message several days ago.
