Hi,
I would be glad if someone could give me a hint on the
following lilo problem.
The configuration
lilo-21.5.1
2 disks (40 Gb each) attached as Master on
IDE controller 0 and 1
Linux is sitting von the first disk,
Windows-Me on the second.
This disk appears as /dev/hdc1 under Linux.
Lilo boots any Linux-kernel (from the first
disk) just fine but it hangs when it should
boot Windows-Me of the 2nd disk.
(The Windows-Me partition is since I
can boot it when I set by BIOS to boot from
the second disk)
I have tried several options for lilo like
LINEAR or LBA32
table
map_drive = 0x81
to = 0x80
but I still have no luck.
Many thanks for a hint,

Only if these are ISA cards. PCI has been designed for IRQ sharing.
ISA not.

These is a grossly misleading statement. IRQ sharing works - if
the drivers and the hardware both support it.

A parallel port doesn't need any IRQ - as the standard printer driver
is using polling mode.

Date: Mon, 11 Dec 2000 11:29:56 +0000
Im running Suse 7 on a new pc with a Rage128ProAGP4x(TMDS) card.
I cannot seem to get the xserver to run kde in anything other than
640x480 mode.
I have used both Sax2 and Yast2 to try and modify the configuration file
at /etc/X11/XF86config
but it seems to change only the 16 bit mode under the screen section,
the Modes section remains unchanged.
Here is the relevant section:
Section "Modes"
Identifier "Modes [0] "
Modeline "640x480" 25.20 640 640 736 784 480 490 492 525
-hsync -vsync
EndSection
I appreciate that there should probably be a 1200x 780 modeline or
something similar but don't want to edit the file
with no information.
Can anyone supply me with a relevant XF86Config file? Or perhaps there
is another reason I am not getting the desired result
from my system.
Thanks in advance,

Hello,
everywhere is written swap partition is only _recommended_. Is there a
way to install
Redhat 7.0 without it? I've got only one free entry in partition table.
Yes, I know
I could create extended partition (and I did it and Linux installed
ok), but in this
case for some reason I could not boot Win98 on the 3rd FAT partition.
Suppose it's a problem with hard drive > 8.4 Gb).
I tried a lot of variants, and only one remains. So, the question is:
how to install Linux w/o swap partition?
Thank you.

Hi all,
I'm trying to set up my modem under Mandrake 7.2.
If I run minicom, it doesn't respond to ATZ, and Kppp also says "modem
not responding".
When I checked setserial /devttyS2, it says IRQ:4. Looking under
Windows, I see that my modem uses IRQ11.
When I enter "setserial /dev/ttyS2 IRQ11", it says "IRQ11 - invalid
flag".
What does this mean, and does anyone know how I can fix it? Do I need
to designate a new serial port at IRQ11?
TIA

Have a look at http://www.mandrakeuser.org/install/iboot2.html. I followed this to
go from Lilo to Grub and it worked a treat. I'm pretty sure that there's a script
in the install that creates a menu.lst file for you - I wouldn't have tried it
otherwise - and it all went very smoothly.

In DOS, there is a program LOADLIN.EXE, which allows me to start
an arbitrary version of linux from within DOS.
What I want is to be able to start (switch to) another version
of kernel from within linux itself. I do not mean just switching
a kernel at runtime with all apps still running, I understand
that it is impossible. I would like to just kind of boot to another
server.
The reason for it is that I have a remote colocated server on which I
would like to try various kernels. But I want it to boot to a stable
version of linux. So I cannot just go around and modify lilo.conf all
the time.
Any idea?

Hi all, RH7.0 install, with KDE-2.0.1. kscd works just fine.
But it looks as if something has a lock file on the cdrom, cdparanoia
can't find it. /dev/cdrom is a link to /dev/scd0 because its also a
burner, but its main address would be /dev/hdb.
What have I got screwed up this time? Or do you need more info?

Yes, it can. In fact all my hard drives are attached to the controller
and NT boots fine. Under the bios I first look at the floppy drive,
then hard drives. Under hard drives I can specify that it looks at the
add-in controller first and then the order of the drives on the
controller. I suppose that I could change the bios to look at my second
drive first, write lilo to the mbr of my second drive, and then enter
the bios to select a drive to boot off of every time I reboot. An ugly
scenario to be sure.

I can boot off of a floppy now. I'm just the impatient type that
doesn't like to wait so long to decompress the kernel.

Yeah, I doubled checked that first off. (Actually second; first I
checked fstab to see if it got screwed up.)
Perhaps I'll just limp along until Promise releases drivers.

Thanks to David and Moonshiner.
I checked with fdisk and made sure that /dev/hda10 is < 1024 cyl.
I am also sure that format is not the problem. I can bring up RH
and mount any of the partitions allocated for Slackware and access
the files there. Only thing I cannot do is make LILO see Slackware.
What I will do is to follow David's suggestion of making LILO point
each Linux to other and take it from there. Thanks again.

linux init=/bin/bash
now edit the file and reboot.

Yes, the kernel needs a math co. However the kernel can be
configured to handle it in software. The kernel you are
trying to install probably doesn't have it turned on.

In RedHat 6.2 this is being done by /etc/cron.daily.
cron.daily executes the command /usr/sbin/logrotate /etc/logrotate.conf.
/etc/logratote.conf by default backs up the logs weekly

But this will always print the filename, even if the string is not found
in the file.

Read the partitioning howto.
It's a good help in this case.

There is a user-mode linux kernel.

The form of the argument is wrong, should be irq 11, not
IRQ11
