Subject: Strange bootup problem with Mandrak 7.1 (maybe UDMA related)
Date: 19 Jul 2000 18:46:52 GMT
Hi,
I have installed Mandrake 7.1 on a computer consisting of an Asus
ME 99B motherboard (which contains an on-board UDMA66 port), a
Celeron 500, and a Western digital WCD 102 AA ( UDMA66) hard
drive. The problem, which is rather wierd, is this-- After the
install, I can boot into the system just fine... Once. The system
comes up properly... starts all the services etc. Then halt and
reboot the system. That's it. No more booting!!! I get a "kernel
panic. Unable to mount root file system on IDE 3:05" ( or
something similar. I'm away from the machines in question right
now). Amazing thing is, I reinstalled the whole system, it booted
properly exactly once and then refused to boot again. What's going
on here? I'm completely baffled.
I understand that a lot of people have had problems with Mandrake
7.1 and UDMA 66 devices. But why would it boot ONCE and not
again. I don't know what IDE chipset is on the board.
(I did see a winbond chip on the board which is usually the IDE
controller... is that it?). Has anybody encountered this
combination of MB and hard disk. If yes, how did you get around
this problem. Do I have to disable the UDMA mode in the the BIOS?
But the question remains, if the problem was with the UDMA driver,
why would it boot even once. Could somebody please throw some
light on this.
Thanks a lot
Chetan Ahuja

Could be. The lucent chips are used in ISA winmodems, but I don't think
a modern laptop would use ISA.

Yes, but it's probably all internal. The external stuff is PCMCIA.
> The laptop BIOS has no PCI stuff, no interrupts, nothing.
Do you have windows? If so, you can check the hardware configuration
for the modem. The only difference between windows and linux on my
computer is the IRQ assignment. Windows likes IRQ 11 while linux likes
IRQ 5.

Of course, if they own the file, they could always 'chown root', or
anybody else for that matter.

Subject: RedHat & PAM problem ...
Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2000 14:06:47 -0500
Hi All
I built a kernel and root fs using a base RedHat 6.2 install.
I have copied pretty much all of /etc into my
root fs. I am not using shadow passwords. Whenever
I boot from the kernel I built, it boots perfectly
all the way upto the login prompt. But then even root
is not allowed to login and I get something like the following
message:
PAM_pwdb( ): check pass; user unknown
login( ): Login failed from NULL user not known to the underlying
authentication
module.
When I boot from my orignal HD install of 6.2, this
problem never occurs. I tried playing around with the
files in /etc/pam.d/ (login, other, passwd etc.) but cannot
make it work.
Any help would be appreciated.

The insmod errors are probably because the "modules.dep" file doesn't
exist and for some reason depmod is unable to create it.
Go into the "/lib/modules" directory there should be several more
directories there. One for each kernel version you've made.
In each of those directories there should be a file called "modules.dep"
I've never been able to figure out how to get depmod to create a file for
any kernel other than the one I'm running.
This is a bit of a pain but it works...
Create a file called modules.dep in the directory of interest. It doesn't
matter what it contains since will get overwritten on the next boot.
Then reboot with the new kernel. You'll get errors.
After the boot has completed and you've logged in reboot again. This time
the boot should be clean.
I'm sure this isn't the "recommended" way of doing things but I works for
me.

When you go to the 2.4- kernels much has changed and you need some stuff to
be updated.
I don't know if you've paid much attention to the Changes file at the top
of the kernel tree but it's worth a good read.

I do not have XWindows running or available so I have to do this the

Any good recommendations supported in the latest (stable) kernel? I'm
looking to capture images from off a video feed (traffic cam) and then
post the images to a INternet page. We're using something right now but
it's not handling data well. Works but is kludged together.
Willing to spend whatever on getting a good video line to a video

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

RedHat 6.1 ships with a sendmail.cf already built and working. Sendmail.cf is a
sort of "main" config file
for sendmail, though there are others. Sendmail will become embittered if it
cannot determine your machines name,
and more so, if your name won't resolve out properly. These are not normally
issues, but are easy to fix, if you encounter them. NOTE! The 6.1 sendmail.cf
has a security issue involving a certain pattern of relaying that it by
default allows. If you are PPP it's a don't care, probably, but, if you stay on
the net 24X7 unattended, it may be.
Swap it for the sendmail.cf that shipped with 6.2, it's fixed, and the swap is
painless.

I believe this is an indication that the refresh rate you're
driving the monitor at is a little too high. Many modern
monitors will support refresh rates that are annoyingly high
for the human eye. As long as you're within the specs for
your monitor, it's not like it's going to endanger the
hardware or anything like that. It's just that it can be
annoying to look at. OTOH, if you're overdriving the
monitor, it could be a problem. Be forewarned.
This happened to me when I was running my ViewSonic in
1600x1280. When I'd avert my eyes to read a piece of paper
or something, I'd pick up this annoying flicker from the
monitor in my peripheral vision and it was driving me crazy.
I stepped the resolution down to 1280x1024 and it's fine...

Hello...
I tried that, and unfortunately it did the same thing. I moved the modules.dep

In bttvgrab you=B4ll find howto set up a webcam.
good luck...
