Why not just run dosemu and run those batch files as-is?
Hope that helps.

By the way, DOS batch files huh? Batch scripts only get more terse and
complicated on unix systems. An even then you won't be able to tell the boss
you can't work today because "...the system is down"!

Subject: newbie query - saving install messages to a file
Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 19:23:03 +1200
Hi all. Just a quick query here -
I've had an unsuccessful attempt at installing Linux (both RH7.1 , then
Mandrake 8.0 ) . I found (via the weekly Linux Journal "mailout" ) that
when you *already* have Linux installed, (and are trying to upgrade) , you
can print a copy of /var/log/dmesg to help if you have any problems.
My query is - " If I do **not** yet have Linux installed (and I'm in the
process of *trying to do so* ) , **is it possible** for me to zing the
messages that apppear to a file ? "
What I mean by this is , when I go to the dos prompt and fire off
"autoboot" to install Linux ( I can't boot from CD on my system) , you get
the usual pile of stuff as the installer chugs away. I want to be able to
save those messages by sending them to a file.
It would seem that a dos pipe command might do this , but I don't know if
it's possible . (And given that Linux *ain't yet installed* , a Linux
command probably ain't possible either .... :-))
Many thanks in advance for any help received !

I just added a second hard drive to my linux system that contains win95 on
it. From linux I can mount the disk, and I have reconfigured Lilo.conf so
that it should boot either. But when I choose to boot windows, it tells me
there is a nonsystem disk, and to remove it and hit a key to continue(no I
don't have a floppy in). I have gathered that I may need to move the windows
disk so that it is the number one disk, then install Lilo on it. Is this my
problem? If so, how do I go about installing Lilo in the right place on the
Windows hard drive? Thanks much.

LIL- ... If that is indeed the error, means the descriptor table is
corrupt. This can either be caused by a geometry mismatch or by moving
/boot/map without running lilo.
Boot again with your floppy and log in.... type in lilo -l
then type exit
and again exit
This will reboot your system properly.

Su to root ( `su root`) and type `linuxconf` and set the user's privileges
as such: linuxconf>User accounts>Normal>User
accounts>Name>Privileges>General system control>May shutdown>Granted.
Don't have linuxconf? try `rpmfind linuxconf` or download from a known site.
Here's the specification and binary rpm:

Hi,
/*

~3GB linux
~22GB D: with Windows main directoy (98SE)
*/
i have installed Mandrake 8.0. Its mounts my Win/DOS C-Partition correctly
as /mnt/win_c and my drive D: as /mnt/win_d.
After reboot into Windows my partition D: was lost! he founds only partition
C:. DOS-fdisk doesn't know the type of this D: partition anymore.
Rebooting into linux mount my part D: correctly to /mnt/win_d.
linux-fdisk shows this partition as "hidden Win95" (1c). I changed this to
(c). After reboot it was again (1c), so i assume that lilo makes somthing
wrong.
changing again to type (c), booting with a floppy and voala: i see my
partition D: now. With a (DOS-)fdisk /MBR i have now again a bootable
Windows harddisk.
I tried a second fresh install and Mandrake misconfigured again my partiton
D: to "hidden".
How can i avoid Mandrake to destroy my partitiontable?

Read man lilo and man lilo.conf paying attention to re-mapping of hard drives.
What it means is: the asignment of the drive is such that the OS sitting on it
thinks it is on primary master (C:\ in DOS parlance).
Usualy on modern BIOSEs you can do it from BIOS setup and boot from drives that
are not primary masters.

Subject: frequent crashes and boot problems
Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 12:13:41 +0200
Hi there,
I am no specialist, but have been using Linux for about 2 years at home
: RedHat 6.0 on an old Fujitsu (Cyrix P200+ ; 32 mb RAM. I never had
any serious problem that I could remember of. On this system, I have
implemented fvwm2 as X server ; StarOffice 5.1, licq, Xcdroast, The GIMP
and plenty other nice things.
So, lately, I've tried to install the same Linux on my PC at work : an
old Compaq Deskpro 4000 with about 200 Mhz pentium processor, and 64 mb
of RAM. Should have worked at least as good as on my home PC.
Installation went OK, but I got frequent crashes. More and more frequent
unexpected crashes. I came to think that it must come from the APM
daemon: so, I recompiled a kernel without APM. I am not too sure that I
have left all other settings same as before : must have modified
something in network config, since one NFS daemon does not boot up all
right. This usually does not prevent the system to boot, and I am able
to connect to local intranet and internet all right. Besides this, the
new system does crash about as often as the one before. I have tried
compiling a third kernel, but, this time, I got more problems : the
compiler crashed before achievement of its job ! I tried several
times, and it crashed each time at different points with various error
messages. The third or fourth time, I finally got the kernel compiled
all right... but, once launched, it does not behave any differently than
the two others : frequent crashes... maybe twice a week, and,
sometimes, several times in a single day... while, on my home system, it
NEVER happened that I had a crash that I could not recover in just
quitting XWindow. By the way, I don't think that a poor configuration of
my XWindow would explain my troubles, since, while having compiler
problems, my trials to perform compiling outside of X lead to as many
crashes as before.
Could someone tell me what check I could run, or give any useful advice
?
Thanks in advance

Subject: Partitioning and other advice for Linux server running Domino

Well, I've done it. I have finally talked my company into serious
consideration of Linux solutions over our current MS setup.
The first thing I get to do is find an alternative to MS Exchange.
Because we still need groupware capabilities, I am looking at Lotus
Domino. I have obtained a demo copy of the software and I am going to
set up a server on Linux for a couple of weeks for testing purposes.
Here is(are) my question(s). . .
The system I am going to be using is a Dell 4400 dual processor 733
MHz system with 1 gig of RAM with an 80gig RAID array.
Does anyone have any suggestions for partitioning? I want something
simple, but I don't want to shoot myself in the foot either. How much
space do I give to /opt? /home? Where does Domino store the
databases?
(Also, as a side question, will Domino run okay on RedHat 7? All the
documentation I find recommends 6.2, however, none of it is terribly
current, and I don't see anything that specifically says 7.0 is bad.)
Alternatively, if someone can point me toward some decent
documentation for a Linux install of Domino, that would be great,
also. My searches haven't turned up anything useful, even on Lotus'
site.
I would greatly appreciate any advice.
