Not sure what you are saying about the old disk or why it died, but I have
successfully mixed Linux and FAT32 logical partitions in an extended
partition. I did use the extended type that Win98 originally called it.

Windows should not mess with partitions that are not its type. But
Windows will step all over BSD if you try to create a FAT partition after
a BSD slice. I believe that this is because you can only have 1 extended
partition, and a BSD slice looks like one.
The following has been working fine with Mandrake 7.0 on my laptop for
almost a year now (with 192 MB RAM I don't need swap):
Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 1099 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 1 653 5245191 b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hda2 * 654 655 16065 83 Linux /boot LILO
/dev/hda3 656 1099 3566430 f Win95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/hda5 656 872 1743021 83 Linux /
/dev/hda6 873 897 200781 83 Linux was swap, now /var
/dev/hda7 898 1099 1622533+ b Win95 FAT32

Windows does not have to be first. On hda of my main PC I have (2) /boot
partitions first and either or both can have LILO. Win98 FAT32 C: is 3rd,
then an extended partition for everything else.

I agree that any extended partition you intend to use for Windows should
be created by Windows. And it probably works best to put one big logical
partition in that first. But once that is done you can remove the logical
partition with Linux fdisk and split it up like you want it. As long as
the Linux partitions are type 82 or 83, Windows should leave them alone.

Subject: Suse Linux for Alpha Installation
Date: Wed, 13 Dec 2000 06:05:34 GMT
Hi all,
Recently, we procured Suse linux 7.0 for DEC Alpha 1000A 5/333.
As per manual this machine falls under NORITAKE-PRIMO, Boot image name
is aboot_xx
As per the installation manual, we were unable to load suse linux on
the same. The reasons being,
Boot image floppy we created as per the instructions in the manual
contains 3 files i.e.,
* linuxboot
* /etc/aboot.conf
* vz_full.gz.
whereas alpha bios setup contains as per suse reference manual:
* boot name Linux_von_Floppy_Boot
* boot file A:\Linload
* os path cd and CD:
* os options boot fd0:vmlinux.gz root=/dev/fd0 fake_initrd
These parameters are mismatching with reference manual parameters.
Presently, the said machine is running firmware 5.8 which is loaded in
1997.
Please advise me what to do for installation of suse alpha linux
Whether firmware upgradation is needed, if needed where it is
available? Specify any site reference or mail or ftp location.
Any additional steps are required to update the alpha system. please
specify clearly.
Any methods for installation using Redhat linux for Alpha may also be
suggested
Thanking you

Date: Wed, 13 Dec 2000 06:20:20 GMT
I realized I posted a question earlier about this, but I cannot seem
to get backspace working in my xterminals.
I use connect to my RH7 linux box using my PC. I am currently using
bash and my backspace or delete key (along with any combination of
ctrl or alt) doesn't move the cursor or delete the previous character.
If i switch to csh, i can press backspace and get "~".
has anyone had this problem before? i've been trying to get this
working for quite a while, but haven't come across a solution that
works.
(if I telnet or ssh in, i can use backspace)
Could somebody please suggest something? Any response would be most
appreciated!!

Subject: undo partitions
Date: Wed, 13 Dec 2000 06:30:07 -0000
I tried to install Mandrake Linux on a win98 HP Pavilion PC. The Partition
Manager that came with Mandrake used 2 GB out of a 4GB hard-disk for linux.
However, the installation failed completely & I had to reinstall Windows.
However, windows still only sees 2GB out of my original 4GB hard-disk. I
re-formatted my C drive using HP's recovery program, re-installed Win98 and
still the same problem. When I do fdisk it tells me that there is only 1
FAT32 partition with 4GB, so there is nothing for me to delete there.
How would I get back the 2GB that i lost to linux?
I appreciate any feedback.
Thanks.

At a guess:
If you setup a web page on an Apache server and then http to that page
without specifying the name of the html file to load (e.g.: www.pdsvs.com,
instead of www.pdsvs.com/myindex.html) Apache attempts to locate and serve
the 'index.html' file. If that file does not exist, it shows a directory
structure instead.
This is a known feature, and it's really quite useful - on my site for
example, there is a members document download area. The documents change
frequently, and rather than build an HTML page with all of the names and
subdirectories and have to build HREF links and constantly maintain them, I
just put a directory name 'member_docs' on my server. Inside the directory
I put any number of sub-directories and/or files, but NOT an 'index.html'
file. Now, when you click the Member Docs button on the web page, it HREFS
you to the member_docs directory - without specifying an html file to load
- and Apache quite convienently creates a directory listing complete with
icons and displays it, without me having to do anything at all. That is
what you're seeing on your page.
Add an index.html file, or specify a file to load, and that will change.

Amen. What a disappointment.
For better, bloat free browsing, I use Opera 4 (the beta's are coming along
nicely) and/or Konquerer.
When I really need a full-featured browser, I've been using beonex
(www.beonex.com). It's based on the NS6 code, but seems to be a bit faster
loading and have a (somewhat) smaller footprint. It also doesn't attempt
to make you register with Netcenter, or any of that bull.
Oh, I haven't seen your specific error before, but I did find that NS6 does
not run all that well from a 'central' directory. It seems to prefer to be
installed seperately into each users account. If you are going to install
it centrally, make sure it's in a directory that every potential user has
full read-write-execute priviiages to.

I do not know how your previous kernel worked, but it seems to me
that you should again pass the 512 bytes to NT Bootloader. From the
doc I see LIL- means: The descriptor table is corrupt, This can either
be caused by a geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/map without

Find out what sort of power management your BIOS supports (APM or APCI) and
make sure it's enabled in your BIOS. Then 'make xconfig' (or menuconfig)
and see if it's enabled in your kernel. On my kernel (2.4.0) it's under
General Setup. I've got both ACPI and APM turned on, as my BIOS supports
both, and I'm not sure which one it actually uses to turn off the machine
with.
Of course, if you change the kernel, you have to recompile and install it
(sorry, but I don't know how new you are!).
If you've done both those things and it still won't turn off, you can try
the kernel option 'Use real mode APM BIOS call to power off'. It's under
the APM section of the kernel config (on 2.4 kernels, I'm not sure about
2.2).
And don't forget to give Dr. G's 'append="apm=power-off"' addition to LILO
a try to! (I don't use this myself, apparently my hardware doesn't require
it - yours might!)

Bit of a bad table I'd say.
hde1 and two are reversed, and hde3 is of the wrong type.
hde4 is again mislocated and should be hde7, while hde4-hde7 should
all be shifted down one location. To relocate the partitions, you can
use any
linux fdisk. Delete all the partitions and recreate them in the right
order.
Your new table should look like this:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hde1 1 2 16033+ 83 Linux
/dev/hde2 * 3 257 2048287+ b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hde3 258 1915 13317885 f Extended
/dev/hde4 258 290 265041 82 Linux swap
/dev/hde5 291 673 3076416 83 Linux
/dev/hde6 674 1915 9976333+ 83 Linux
/dev/hde7 1916 3736 14627182+ b Win95 FAT32
I'd guess most problems will be solved when you alter this.
Usually this goes without errors, but if you can, back-up any important
data.
The fact that the ext2 FS gets corrupted has to do with this. Linux and
Windows
don't use the same table, due to the fact that hda3 has the wrong ID.
Perhaps the
bad ordering of partitions is also a cause of problems.
After you reordered, linux will not boot. Make a boot disc to solve
this.
Adjust fstab just before you reshuffle, and boot from the floppy, with
root=/dev/hdeXXX option.
Now adjust lilo.conf and rerun /sbin/lilo.
Now when you reboot, linux should be bootable again.
Run fsck's on ALL partitions. The bad table will have caused partition
boundaries to be on
locations where you didn't expect them, so FS's may have overlapped
(and probably did, because you had FS troubles)
So back-up what you can, cross your fingers and good luck.

Mandrake 7.2 Dual Boot
After reading the package of Mandrake 7.0 which contains Boot Magic
and Partition Magic, which I have used once, I bought 7.2 with it's
"easy dual boot" feature.
Well no easy dual boot feature is there. In the 'desktop' version or
"Complete" I go straight to DiskDrake, the partitioner and I'm not
familiar with it.
No documentation or web pages at Mandrakes web site for this option.
The more expensive options offer it.
I've got a 20GB hard drive with Windows 98, using up about 4GB, 64MB
ram and want to dual boot. Is there a step by step for doing this? I
need a step by step to resize the existing Windows partion to, say
10GB and then set up the ext2 and swap partitions on the newly formed
partion. Then have the dual boot option come up. I've done this once
with Partition Magic and Boot Magic.
Thanks.

Have you tried to add it?
NT is not recognized by default, 'cause the auto-lilo configuring
