That is not the second hard disk, it is the 3d partition of the fourth hard
disk. And unless lilo has been improved lately, no.

You can, but you have to write lilo to the mbr on your first disk. I had the
same problem on my system(4 SCSI drives).

No, it means your bios can't/mayn't. And it's not the second disk, it's
the fourth. The bios can often not boot from the second controller
(slave)! Update the bios or put the boot stuff somewhere else.
What is the disk slaved to, btw?

You need to set the 's' bit permission on the programs used to burn a CD.
I do not recall all of the programs. I know one of them must be cdrecord.
You can use find to look for files that belong to the group 'cdwriter' and
that should be all of them.

Why do you not recommend hooking linux to hub ?
I have windows going to hub and linux to hub and modem on third port! Is
there a reason not to do this ?

SuSE 7.0 (2.2.16)
At home I run Linux connected to my ISP getting an IP from them via DHCP.
Sometimes it works great and when I look in the resolv.conf there is my DNS
server, search and domain all gotten via DHCP (not in rc.config). However
sometimes when I've booted I'll start X or something and go to browse and I
can't get anywhere. I can ping an IP address but no name resolution. When I
look in resolv.conf there is nothing but the domain that I put in rc.config
at install. Therefore the ISP info wasn't written for some reason. Any
ideas? Thanks in advance.

I have a soundblaster live value and have followed the directions in the
article in the SuSE sdb called "ALSA update for SuSE SuSE 6.4/7.0/7.1 and do
not have sound. After the alsa update my card was recognized by alsaconfig.
However when it trys to adjust the volumes and change the mixer it fails. No
asound.conf is created. Here are the error messages. I have verified that
the sound drivers are loaded. They even say this using "alsasound status".
"Could not initialize..."
"No mixer config in the /etc/asounf.conf. You have to unmute your card.
Mixer 0/0 'open error."
I've even tryed manually unmuting the mixer and even accessing it via amixer
but I always get the message about the "Mixer 0/0 ' open error. Even when I
try different device names this happens. Thanks.

Date: Sat, 12 May 2001 23:55:37 GMT
I have SuSE 7.0 with 2.2.16 kernel. However a patch was downloaded for it
because of the Promise IDE Controller and Geforce 2 that I have. This was in
the form of K_EIDE.RPM. Anyway I've been trying to get the Nvidia drivers to
work fine and have been having problems. (the nv driver in Xfree works
fine). What I wonder first of all is do I need to use the source or tar from
Nvidia or can I just use the RPM's they provide. Does the patch I got for
the kernel from SuSE make the Nvidia RPM's non usable for me? They seem to
load fine however I can never make it into X. I'll get a black screen with
no errors in the XFree log. IT only stops after "Write-combining range".
Thanks in advance.
Also if I installed the Promise/Geforce patch for the kernel did it update
the header files automatically or do I need to do this?

Here goes ;-)
[1] You do not have the proper permissions to *write* to a device. By=20
default, only root has that prerogative. This is a normal and logical=20
setup, so it "works as designed". ;-)
You can however find a workaround by changing ownerships and permissions =
to=20
some files, but the easiest way around it is to run Gcombust as root. Fr=
om=20
within KDE, create a desktop link with in the section for the executable'=
s=20
name *kdesu* *-c* *gcombust*. Alternatively, install the *sudo* package=20
and read the manuals on it... ;-)
[2] You probably have writing speed set too high, which on burners that=20
connect to the IDE/ATA controller (though emulated as SCSI) may indeed=20
cause buffer underruns. In case of a cdrw, you can retry afterwards. In=
=20
case of a cdr, you get a nice shiny coaster... ;-=DE

[BeoWulf].

After installing RH 7.1 with Apache Web Server, I can get out to the
internet but can't acces my www.domain-name.com. I have a DSL connection
with a Cisco 675 router. I have a dynamic IP so I went through NO-IP.com for
my DNS. I'm enclosing some of the settings and looking for advice on making
this connection.
ifconfig from root

inet addr: 10.0.0.2 Bcast: 10.0.0.255
lo
Link encap: local loopback
inet addr: 127.0.0.1 mask: 255.0.0.0
Apache configuration

Webmaster: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Available addresses
63.xxx.xxx.xx 80 (Dynamic IP from ISP)
Network configuration
Hostname: www.domain-name.com

204.xxx.xxx.xx0 (IP from my ISP)
Hosts
127.x.x.x www.domain-name.com
10.x.x.x www.domain-name.com
I'd appreciate any help on making this configuration work. Whenever I try to
pull up my home page, I receive the error "unable to locate ther server
www.domain-name.com. Please check the server name and try again".
In the error.log there is an entry for #98 can't bind to port 80. Do I need
a cable/dsl router for port forwarding?

StarOffice doesn't have a thing to do with your video card, but it is a
tremendous memory and drive space hog. Run "df -k" and see if one of your
partitions is getting filled up.
