Subject: setup of a postscript printer
Hi,
I am new to linux (4 weeks), so I hope there is no problem for a newbie
question.
I am using a Canon printer/fax/... system. it works well as a generic
postscript printer on a lpr port, but I'd like to have the system take
benefit of the ppd file to access to special features (such as being
able to choose the tray, to fax, to print both sides of the sheet, ...)
How can I setup this ?
Regards,

i have recently installed RedHat 6.2 on an AMD K6/2 400 machine. I had to
remove both my nic's and my sb live! for it to install. The kernel would
stop loading after the IDE Detection. I tried all diffrent combinations of
slots and cards and nothing seemed to help. i am new to linux and not sure
where to go. I have a 3com 3c509b, Realtek 8039, Creative Graphics Blaster

I've just installed LinuxPPC and went to create New User. What happened,
though, I hadn't had much sleep(!), is that I removed the Gome panel
bar, by selecting it and pressing romove! It went. I can't get it back,
and I did it all as Root (obviously).
There is obviously a way to remedy this - but I want good advise before
I do.

There are several specialty distributions written to fit on 386s
with <4MB RAM--but I don't know what/where they are. Check out places
like Woven Goods, looking for small distributions. The current kernel
uses ~5MB RAM, so one has to trim it a lot to run on smaler machines.

The only things I can think of are do you really have the proper amount of
space on the device?? Also, shouldn't you be creating an extended partition
and then create logical drive(s) inside that??? I filled up an 18 gig drive
using the extended partitioning scheme and it's been happy ever since.

I have found a replacement for the now defunct freewwweb. It is
freeatlast. The following works for me:
server assigned IP address
primary DNS = 216.67.14.5
secondary DNS = 216.67.31.254
primary WINS = 0.0.0.0
secondary WINS = 0.0.0.0
use IP header compression
use default gateway on remote network
Does anyone know of another free isp for linux?

That's the driver for the sound feature in some recent VIA chipsets. If
your motherboard doesn't include sound output hardware, or if you're
using another sound board in the computer, you can ignore the messages,
or try removing the module and tracking down what's trying to load it
(probably something in /etc/modules.conf).
If you want to use the VIA sound features, I recommend NOT using the
standard kernel modules, but instead using the ALSA
(http://www.alsa-project.org) drivers. These can be a bit tedious to
install, but they work better than the standard kernel drivers for the
VIA sound features, in my experience.

If this system uses the old IBM proprietary motherboard connections, not ISA,
then not all distros will support it. Check in advance or you will lose too

Ok here it is. We are doing class project to autoinstall linux red hat 6.2
from a CD.
1)we have set up a floppy with kickstart to implement a autoinstall with red
hat 6.2 and it seems to work.
2) we had to change the syslinux.cfg and ks.cfg files on the floppy to get
it to work.
3)we have downloaded the boot.iso and burned it on a CD it works
Question?
Will burning the syslinux.cfg and ks.cfg work on a CD (with Red Hat rpms)
to implement a auto install and what paths would we need to set up, for the
files to work with the red hat 6.2 rpms?
Next problem is the hardware. We are supposed to get this to work with any
system haha. The best Idea we have is to reboot after the installation and
run KUDZU.
need help with scripting info for reboot and implementation of KUDZU.
Thanks,
Wayne

Subject: Re: PPP and eth0

Right now your routing table looks something like this, when ppp is not
running:
route -n
Destination Gateway Genmask Iface
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 eth0
where the destination of 0.0.0.0 means the default route - where Linux
sends packets for which it doesn't have a specific route.
When ppp is running, ppp then becomes the default route, and your
eth0 connection is technically called 'messed up' - everything goes
out the ppp connection, and eth0 is lonely and ignored.
You don't want that. If your local network is 192.68.128.0, you want
route -n #this should give you the following
Destination
192.68.128.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 eth0
The way you set this up varies dramatically from one distribution to
another. If you have 'linuxconf', try to set it through there, or
using whatever network configuration tool they gave you. You don't
want eth0 to be the default route - you give it a specific network
number for your network. Then all will be fine.

Depending on the WindowManager you're using it's somewhere in the
menus. If you don't find one, try this:
Press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch from X to the console. Log in. Type
export DISPLAY=:0
exactly like this. Then type
panel &
or
panel&
or
panel &
The important thing is the & at the end of the line. It tells the
shell to start the panel in the background.
To logout in the console type
exit
or
logout
Note : This will also kill your panel again. Make shure to save your
session BEFORE you log out. The best would be to save the session and
immediatly restart X.
Hope this helps!

Sounds like one bootable disk is not going to do
it in this case --after booting the disk and selecting
YaST1, you need to tell YaST to load the CD and LAN
card modules necessary for accessing your hardware
as part of the installation process. You will need
to create from the CD a standard Suse 6.4 boot floppy,
and then a second floppy "modules" using either
rawrite or dd (consult Suse's docs for details). Then
having booted the Suse 6.4 install diskette and chosen
YaST1, when you are presented with the menu one of
whose selections is install "hardware modules," choose
this selection and
load the appropriate controller and ethernet
modules for your hardware from the modules diskette you
prepared. Then proceed with having YaST mount the CD and
install.

There is a distribution called DragonLinux. One of its goals is to take
very little disk space, while providing a fairly complete distribution.
It's at www.dragonlinux.org. FWIW it's based on slackware.
Also, I am working on producing a CD that will act as the root fs for a
linux box. If I ever get it working (I have posted my troubles to this
newsgroup), I could help you create your own for this system.
Another option would be to try installing linux on the HDD by hand.
I've never done this, but I would start by taking a look at the linux
boot-disk howto. You also might be able to learn something by taking a
look at the linux router project, and similar projects.

A linux newsgroup? By the way I'm having to beg for answers for this
os... you'd think I was in Barbie newsgroup. <total frustration
showing here!>
Ok, lets assume I'm not a complete idiot and can actually boot my
computer. I can use ws_ftp (been doing so for years). I can log in
to the linux server and I can upload files to my personal directory.
What I can not do is upload files to the httpd/html or httpd/cgi-bin
or httpd/icons directory. Apparently I don't have rights to those
directories and I don't know how to set those rights. I don't have
XWindows installed on this box so I need to do this the hard way.
I did edit the /etc/ftpusers file and add my name to it but that
didn't help.

Subject: Promblems with SCSI in RH 6.2

Hi All,
I'm trying to get my Adaptec 2940 SCSI card to work under properly
under RedHat 6.2 (using aic7xxx module). Redhat detected the card just
fine, the module is loaded at boot, however, when I access the drives, I
keep getting an interruption. I noticed once that the SCSI bus was
getting reset.
Anybody have any ideas how to fix the problem?
Thanx!
Chris

This is what's supposed to happen. When a new user is added, a new
group for that user is also added (with the same id if possible). This
is so that the user has a "private" group as a default group to
associate files with. Given only this information, I would not suspect
that your /etc/group file is corrupted.
