What specific initilialization do you mean? I just do the following. Some
articles say you need to give permission to users to use ttyS0. I never
did. But it makes no difference for me.

# ln /dev/ttyS0 /dev/pilot
set jpilot to use /dev/pilot as serial port
set PILOTRATE=57600 in system environment, if needed
and finally click backup on the jpilot

Never done it myself , but this might help...

-Copy MSDOS.SYS and IO.SYS over the network from another DualBooting
NT4/DOS networked machine
-Copy the bootsect.dos to c: and make changes to boot.ini.

MOST IMPORTANT:
Some sector value in bootsect.dos must be changed to point to the
IO.sys (or MSDOS.SYS) starting sector. Don't know if a NT based "disk
doctor" tool exists to determine this starting point

Hi,

I'm getting these errors appearing on the screen, and also in my
/var/log/messages file:

linux kernel: hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady
SeekCompleteDataRequest Error }
linux kernel: hda: read_intr: error=0x40 {
UncorrectableError },LBAsect=28083788, sector=28083725
linux kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev 03:01 (hda), sector 28083725

I thought that it may have been a crook HDD problem, so I've replaced the
HDD, and re-installed the OS from scratch, just to find that these errors
continue to occurr.

Can anyone shed some light on what they actually mean, what I should do, and
if they're dangerous...

TIA

Adam

i think /usr/src/linux/documentation/sound/soundblaster and others are very
helpful for both problems, but older SB16 give very bad midi output, if so -
try sw wavetable

What is the partition type reported by Linux fdisk? Is it really a FAT
filesystem, and not NTFS or anything?

For autodetecting filesystems, have you created a file /etc/filesystems
with a list of the filesystems to try. This is doumented in mount(8) or
fstab(5) IIRC.

Does this work as root?:
mount -t vfat /dev/hdd4 /mnt/zip
If this works, then it's the filesystems file that needs creating. For
autodetectable filesystems, normal (non-root) users cannot specify what
fstype they want.

Roger

Well, when you said "the homepage" of your Realmagic card, I naturally assumed
you meant www.sigmadesigns.com, not some third party web site.

I do not have any suggestions :-( I myself have a Hollywood Plus card and want
to watch DVD's with it, but there are no DVD players for Linux, I believe
(apart from Livid, but that is quite simply a bastard). I did get it outputing
'standard' mpegs though, but it was REALLY basic.

Now I'm gonna check out that "homepage" you mentioned.

it's a (mis)feature of Redhat's customization: they replaced a number of
definitions in the XTerm app-defaults file. I noticed this the other
day when installing a recent Redhat, and corrected the problem by replacing
it with my original version.

The XFree86 xterm supports ANSI color and VT220 emulation

ok, currently i think we are up to 2.4.0test12 right? let's assume we
are. Then let's say that Linux officially says that test13 won't be a
test but will be the offical release for 2.4. So, based on that you are
saying that whatever changes were put into official kernel from test12
(maybe a difference of a week in realtime) will make you say it's ok to
use just b/c Linus says its ready, even though it could only be one
upgrade from now u would say its ok? What makes you change your mind so
quickly from one release to the next? Linus? If he had said it was ready
now even after test12 was already released would u come back on here and
say ' I changed my mind. Linus says its ok so I'm gonna use it now'.
Even though 2 hours before Linus could say that you would say you
wouldn't use it. If Linus renamed 2.4.0test12 to 2.4 would that make
you feel any better, whether he said it was offical 2.4 or not?

you people are too picky it seems

It's a bug in RH's rock solid and well tested version of gcc ... oh and
you mustn't use gcc but kgcc to compile the kernel anyway. The Makefile
of 2.2.18 is supposed to detect kgcc itself.

Shows up with newer assembler versions, AFAICT you may safely ignore
them for the time being.

Go ahead 8) ... okay, no. It's not that simple, actually. Some things
you need to keep in mind as there are some files for which / needs to
be writeable ...

/etc/mtab
/etc/nologin
/forcefsck

... and probably more depending on the distribution. Usually though /
needn't to be either very busy nor that large, mine is 15MB.

If you've a second disk then how about mirroring / ? It's what I've
been doing for years ...

find / -mount | cpio -pvd /mnt

... with my spare / mounted on /mnt and then adjust /mnt/etc/fstab.

Alternatively re-mount / the init scripts, e.g. something like ...
/etc/rc2.d/S99remount re-mount ro
... and ...
/etc/rc0.d/K00remount re-mount rw
...

It's true though, there's a small time window here during which something
could go wrong and there may be quite well a better way.

Hi!

I'm new at Linux

I had install Corel Linux and I would like to remove it and install
Linux Mandrake 7.2.

How should I do this? Should I delete the Corel Partition and
reformate the disk for Mandrake?

Thank you in advance
