Suse has an article (search in their support database at their site for
"Promise") about some issues (for instance SuSE 7.0 can't recognize a hard
disk connected to the onboard Promise Controller on an A7V motherboard
without this patch. There are also issues with Geforce cards fixed by this.
I think they throw in an updated GL driver or something. Not sure. SuSE 7.1
has this fixed.

Yes it is. Almost every distro will give you an option to both use a boot
disk and to not install lilo/grub/another boot manager.
For a newbie I would suggest Mandrake 8 or Red Hat 7.1

Subject: Strange "hangings" after IO!
Hi,
SYMPTOMS:
After an IO operation (ex. copying a directory)
more or less intense, the system seems to hang
immediately (to 2 seconds sometimes) after the
IO "operation" completion for a period from
1, 2 or more seconds depending (I think) from
the amount of data written/read. When this occurs,
the system stops even echoing to the console although
it bufferizes the input chars.
KERNEL: 2.4.3
ENVIRONEMNT:
I'm installing a new linux from scratch.
I have all, but a couple of things like scanner,
cdrw, installed and working properly.
X, KDE, Printer, Sound, ... everything seems
to work fine.
In my previous distributions Linuxes I never had
such a problem.
This is the first time I'm using the kernel 2.4.3.
==================================================
This problem is particularly annoying when listening
MP3. The sound stops. It seems the windows :-)
Can someone help me please?
TIA for any comments or help.

I've got an HP PSC 500 printer/scanner/copier that I'd like to get
working with Linux (I'll settle for just the printer.)
I'm running RH 7.0. This model is not listed in the printtool database
and trying other HP drivers with various settings hasn't worked. A
search on the Linux Hardware DB turned up nothing and of course HP's
site is of no use.
Does anyone know if/where I can get a driver for this thing? Thanks.

All,
every time I boot (or perhaps more often than that...) something changes
the permissions
of /dev/audio* /dev/midi* /dev/sequencer* /dev/dsp* /dev/mixer* to
600.
I start X, and try to run an MP3 player and *grrrr.
I added:
chmod 666 /dev/dsp* /dev/audio* /dev/sequencer* /dev/midi* /dev/mixer*
to /etc/rc.d/rc.local
but it doesn't work (or something resets the perm. after logging in and
before/during
X startup). Haven't narrowed it down yet...
Anyone know why ?

PCTel LINUX MODEM DRVER INSTALLATION GUIDE
By David Oakley
LINUX VERSIONS SUPPORTED:
This driver has been tested on RedHat Linux versions 6.0 6.1 and Linux
Mandrake 6.1 7.0. The driver was originally written for Caldera Open
Linux 2.2 and should therefore also work with Open Linux though I have not
personally tested it.
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:
This driver requires that you have a motherboard with the following
features:
 SiS Chipset.
 C-Media CMI8738 Sound Chipset.
 PCTel HSP56 Modem Riser Module.
SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS:
In order to successfully compile and install the modem driver there are
certain software packages that must first be installed on your system.
Before you continue please make sure that the following software packages
and their dependents are installed. If these packages are not installed
you will receive error messages while trying to compile the driver.
kernel-source -- Kernel source code
kernel-headers -- Kernel source code headers
glibc-develop -- GLIB C source code
binutils -- Binary utilities
ncurses-develop -- Ncurses source code
gcc -- GNU C language compiler
make -- Make file creator.
DRIVER FILES:
The driver files should be in a single archive file, which includes the
following.
/src/module/Makefile
/src/module/ptmodule.c
/lib/control.a
/lib/dsp.a
/lib/hal.a
/lib/pctel.o
/lib/ptserial.a
/pctel_readme.txt
BEFORE YOU BEGIN:
Before you begin there are a few things you should remember and be causous
of.
1) In order to install any device driver you must have superuser (root)
access to the Linux system.
2) Linux is a case sensitive operating system and incorrectly capitalizing
commands or file names will cause errors.
3) When loged in as the superuser (root) you are capable of causing great
damage to both your systems hardware and software. BE CAREFUL.
INSTALLING THE DRIVER:
Step 1: Decompress the archive file and/or copy the modem driver source
code to the ( / ) root directory on your system. Make sure that the files
listed above are in the correct folders. The Makefile and ptmodule.c
files should be in the /src/module directory on your harddrive. The files
dsp.a, control.a, hal.a, pctel.o and ptseral.a should all be in
the /lib/ directory on your harddrive.
Step 2: At the Linux command prompt or in a Linux terminal window, change
to the /src/module directory using the cd /src/module command and use
the make command to rebuild the driver file and create the /lib/pctel.o
file. If you receive an error message during this step then you are most
likely missing some necessary software packages. Make sure that all of the
kernel source code is installed and that gcc and all of its dependents are
installed. If no errors are reported its safe to continue to step 3.
Step 3: Change to the /lib/ directory with the command cd /lib/ and use
the command insmod pctel.o to install the modem driver. This driver uses
the major number 62 and the minor number 79 which maps to serial port 16
(/dev/ttyS15).
Step 4: Create a character device node for the modem driver by using the
mknod /dev/ttyS15 c 62 79 command. Remember, when typing Linux commands
pay close attention to your capitalization. Linux is a case sensitive
operating system and incorrectly capitalizing a command will return an
error message.
Step 5: Use the command chgrp uucp /dev/ttyS15 to change the group
ownership for the modem.
Step 6: Use the command chmod 666 /dev/ttyS15 to grant users read/write
access to the modem. Without this on the superuser (root) will be able to
use the modem.
Step 7: Use the command ln s /dev/ttyS15 /dev/modem to create a
symbolic link to the modem named modem. If you choose not to create a
symbolic link named modem, them some communications programs will be
unable to access the modem.
Step 8: Use the command cp /lib/pctel.o /lib/modules/2.2.14-15mdk/net to
copy the pctel.o file to the /lib/modules/2.2.14-15mdk/net subdirectory.
On your system the 2.2.14-15mdk may be slightly different dependig on
which Linux kernel you are using. If you are using a kernel other than
2.2.14-15mdk, replace the 2.2.14-15mdk with the kernel version you are
using.
Step 9: Use a program such as kppp to test the modem. If everything is
working you will need to edit the /etc/rc.sysinit file and add the
following command to the end of the file to load the modem driver every
time the system starts.
#Load the modem driver pctel.o
modprobe pctel.o -a

Hi,
Before:
win98 on C: and win2000 on D: on the same hard drive.
Now:
RedHat on what used to be C: and win2000 still on D:
When i installed linux i simply deleted the C: partition and made new ones
for linux, but first (!!!) i made a boot disk for win2000 by formatting a
floppy from win2000 and copying these files:
boot.ini
bootsect.dos
ntdetect.com
ntldr
from the win98 C: to it.
Using this boot disk is now the only way i can start win2000.
I've tried to modify the lilo.conf file, but when i choose win2000 when
booting with lilo i get
loading win2000
and nothing more happends, what can i do about this?
I've tried to use a program called "smart boot manager"
(http://www.gnuchina.org/~suzhe/) which claim to be very OS-independent and
full-feutered, but when booting with this i cannot see the win2000
partition, but i can boot linux from it (i installed it from linux).
I don't know what would happen if i installed it from win2000, but i have a
feeling that it would either be the same or the opposite, i would only be
able to boot win2000, but i really don't what to mess around to much with
this ... i wouldn't be surprised if i did something so i couldn't boot one
or both at all.
Any ideas?

I'm at the point now where I'm ready to switch to linux, but I have
some concerns.
Has anybody been able to get a MicroSolutions Backpack CD-RW to work
on linux? I don't see it on any compatiblity list. I know you're not
supposed to be able to get software driven hardware (which I think it
may be) such as WinModems to work in Linux, but I know of people who
have gotten WinModems to work so I'm hoping something similar can be
done with my Backpack.
Also, I have no idea what some of my hardware is. Some of it is
pretty old. Any tips in determining just what some of them are?

Tweeking for optimal performance is THE Linux way.
Buying different hardware in the hope it will do wonders is the
Intel/Microsoft way.
(BTW do you consider changing fleshware too for something "newer, speedier"?)
So pick you choice.
Have fun.

Hi. I just decided to try out Progeny on a system that's been happily
running Mandrake 7.2.
I wiped the drive and did the first part of the install no problem. I
remove the CD as to instructions, reboot and then reinsert CD (again as to
instructions). This is where it gets flakey.
I get:
Building Dependency Tree...
mv: cannot stat '/etc/apt/apt.conf': No such file or directory
Installing hardware detection packages...
Configuring X Window System servers...
Scanning templates...
Preconfiguring packages.....
It now sits there doing nothing, no cd or harddisk action, for about 4
minutes when everything just shutdown.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
