Hi
When I start kwintv I get a very good picture and at a few stations
sound, but not at every time. when i start "program edit" and change the
frequenz (and then back to the old frequenz) of the station i get sound,
then i exit the edit-dialog and have sound and pic. But when I change
the station and back to the old station I don't have sound.
Can someone help me

Yes, I did. I'm fairly sure this has nothing to do with the
attribution of serial IRQs, so I'm completely stumped.

Hello,
I am working on Red Hat 6.2, and I'm trying to use
Xvfb. I installed the RPM from the cdrom, it's the version 3.3.6-20.
I launch the command " Xvfb :0" to start a virtual X server on display
0
but it fails with the message : " failed to set default font path
'/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/,/usr/X1
1R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/,/usr
/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/'
Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed' "
Do you know where is the font "fixed" ?
I thought it was in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc directory.
And can I configure the font path, to make Xvfb work properly ?
Please help me, I feel nervous...
Thank you

Hello everyone,
i would be very thankful if somebody could tell me how to setup
RedHat7.0 on a Mylex AcceleRAID 170 controller or how to create a driver
disk that supports this hardware. I've only found some sources of a new
driver that can be compiled into a new kernel. But I really need setup

Thanks for any possible help.

Maybe rebooting is too much in this situation, and as good Linux users we
should reboot our machines only when absolutely needed. Try switching to
single user mode (init 1) and then returning to full multiuser mode (init
2 or init 3, depends on your distro) to see if modules get loaded
automatically.

Subject: Configuring Sound
Hi,
I have a Creative AWE 64 16-bit Audio (SB16 compatible) sound card.
I have unsucessfully tried to configure sound many times.
I used sndconfig to configure sound, it works but I get error messages
when my system is booting up. The error is that it says something has
failed when it tried to start up the sound related processes.
Also when I play mp3's on Winamp I get the message: "decode loop" when
winamp forwards to the next mp3 to be played.
Can someone please tell me the best way to configure such a sound card.
I have also read the mini howto for AWE cards which states that this
has a low level driver and needs to be configured in a special way.
I am using Red Hat 6.
any help is greatly appreciated.
cheers,
Arun

Take a good look at /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.

No patching necessary. Grab the rpm-3.0.5 rpm and install.
No need for rpm 4.

Use the lsof program to list processes using the /dev/modem file
like this:
# lsof /dev/modem
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
pppd 6537 root 8u CHR 4,65 192680 /dev/ttyS1
#
Also check the /var/log/dmesg, /var/log/boot.log, and /var/log/messages
files for logs of the serial port init, that should tell you if your
com ports are set for the correct IO/IRQ. for example:
# grep tty /var/log/dmesg
ttyS01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A

Easiest thing is to use a linux kernel specially compiled for the job --
try floppyfw and freesco. Either can run on a 486 without a hard drive,
and the floppyfw does a great job at seeing 2 identical NE2000
compatibles (with different IRQ and base address settings of course --
do this in DOS with the supplied diskettes or move jumpers by hand if
applicable)

I forgot to add that some applications are not compatible with
firewalls. Firewalls are in general designed to block outside traffic
that is not a reply to something you sent. And the sending machine has
no way of guessing your IP masquerade scheme in advance. So a lot of
interactive games won't work with them in place. You're going to have to
seriously evaluate your security needs, and probably decide on just
doing a plug-unplug or switch bypass of some sort to connect directly to
the internet when you want to game play, and some scheme for deciding
what on your computer(s) or network you want to be accessible and what
you don't.

Subject: Re: Dual Boot Blues

I know how you feel Bill, I too have just recently trod this path. The
information you seek is indeed is at the address given by Eric but if you
want the short version read on.
The way I did it (with NT4 service pack 5 but Windows 2000 uses the same
files) was to use the NTloader program.
If you load linux second and allow the LinuxLoader (lilo) to reside on the
partition that contains the MBR (master boot record) you will overwrite
NTLDR. This is a file NT needs to boot up. If you have already done this
you will need to read the HOWTO to obtain the Bootpart program to fix
NTloader. If you have any problems with this email me.
Otherwise assuming you loaded lilo to your linux partition your machine will
boot to the normal NT boot options. To be able boot linux as one of the
options you need to edit the boot.ini file located in your Windows partition
to point the way, as it were, to your linux OS.
(I assume you created a boot disk for linux during linux installation)
Boot into linux with a boot disk created for the purpose.
In a terminal or console log in as root.
type in :
dd if=/dev/hdax of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
including spaces
Where hdax is your linux partition (from what you wrote about your
partitioning it will probably be hda3. This command will copy your boot
sector information from off you linux partition to a file located in the /
directory and name that file bootsect.lnx. Copy this file to a DOS
formatted floppy with
mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt
copy /bootsect.lnx /mnt
umount /mnt
Reboot your machine into Windows 2000 and copy the file bootsect.lnx from
the floppy to your C:\> root directory in Windows. Then find and edit
boot.ini in Windows 2000 usually also located in the root directory. This is
roughly how the file looks before editing:
[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]

Your version will probably refer to Windows 2000 not NT 4. Add the
following line
c:\bootsect.lnx="Linux "
Save the file. When you reboot your machine, in addition to your normal
Windows 2000 boot options you will also have an option of Linux.
Hope this helps and good luck with linux.
Regards Tad

Have you done an upgrade to lpr in the last couple months? If so you
might need to reconfigure your printer filters (on both machines) there
were some major changes in lpr recently.

Hi Bluster,
Hey thanks for the help. That really hit the spot since the file appears to
be hidden. (?) I'm using Slackware 7 btw.
Here's another question for you. Could you please give me a rundown on
themes. I've been downloading .etheme files and .tar.gz files but I'm not
sure what to do with them. According to http://e.themes.org, I'm supposed to
put the .etheme files in /usr/share/enlightenment/themes but that directory
contains folders yet .ethemes isn't an extractable format (tar and gunzip).
The themes from http://gtk.themes.org with the .tar.gz extensions do contain
directories which appear to correspond to the existing themes I have
already, but when I try to install them from within E, it doesn't appear to
want to work. Sometimes, I even screw up the theme installation, hence the
initial email. :)
The Enlightenment configuration editor contains an option to change the
Theme but so does the Gnome control center. The new theme shows up in one
but not the other. Can you explain where I'm supposed to put which file?
Thanks,
Dennis.
