*shrug* Guess I'm spoiled from doing it over T1. Not so painful at
300+K/sec.

Yes, you'll have to do a mkinitrd, lilo, and whatnot. I guess I forgot
this since I don't use RPM to mange my kernels.

I've never had problems of that sort, even going from RPM 3->4.

If you are more confortable using MS products you could use Exchange...

Not procmail; the linux machine will need to run a MTA (Mail Transport Agent)
commonly used are sendmail, postfix and qmail. The MTA takes an incoming
message and delivers it to the correct destination. That destination can
either be the mail-server of your internet provider, which then delivers
the message to it's final destination, or a local mailbox.

Yes. fetchmail would be used to "fetch email" from the server at your
ISP and deliver it to the local linux machine. Procmail is generally
used as a mailfilter, so not directly needed.
Once the mail is delivered to the local mailbox on the linux machine,
you'll need to configure OE to get the mail from there to the users
machine. This requiers that the linux machine either runs a POP3 daemon,
or an IMAP server.

Yes indeed,

You can't really, but why can't your users simply have a local account
on the intranet, for localmail, and a second account from your ISP?
Surely OE can handle two accounts...

The vacation program may be what you need.

Apparently you do not know what crossposting is (comma separated list of
newsgroups), because you did not crosspost, you posted each separately.

The only thing identd is useful for is if you connect to IRC servers that
require it. Otherwise it is not really needed.

/usr/src/linux/Documentation/paride.txt says in part:
The document describes the support in Linux for parallel port IDE
devices. It does not cover parallel port SCSI devices, "ditto" tape
drives or scanners. Many different devices are supported by the
parallel port IDE subsystem, including:
MicroSolutions backpack CD-ROM
MicroSolutions backpack PD/CD
MicroSolutions backpack hard-drives
MicroSolutions backpack 8000t tape drive

Older is generally better, because it means it is likely supported by
Linux. My main box is an old P100 box, which has gone through some CPU
upgrades (P180 MMX and now K6-2/400, not much faster), S3 Trio64 video
(not known for speed), SB 16 ISA sound, etc. It all works fine in Linux.
The install will probably identify most of your hardware. Or if you have
windows on it now, go through the System device list in Control Panel and
make a note of resources used for devices (port and irq).

The makefiles come with the kernel sources and if the .config does not
exist, it will after you 'make config' (or menuconfig or xconfig). Are
you trying to compile one of the included kernels or a new kernel version.
If the former, did you install kernel source from the CD?
> I have the replacement Kernel and or a patch, that I want to
> upgrade to, is there any way to get this distro to use my kernel?
Certainly: Welcome to SuSE Linux 7.1 (i586) - Kernel 2.4.3 (3).
Check /etc/lilo.conf first to see if you might want to change anything to
be able to boot to your old or new kernel (in case your new one does not
work).
Same as most other distros:
cd /usr/src
rm linux
mkdir linux-<version>
ln -s linux-<version> linux
(untar kernel source)
cd linux
make mrproper
(edit Makefile to uncomment line that installs in /boot)
make menuconfig
make dep
make clean
make install
make modules
make modules_install
If it is a laptop do not chose any kernel pcmcia options unless it does
"everything" you need. Better to install pcmcia source rpm instead then
after booting with new kernel:
rpm -bi /usr/src/packages/SPECS/pcmcia.spec (or something similar)
I have only used kernel sound modules. Compiling Alsa modules would
require other sources besides alsa source rpm (gdk and gtk?).

Check permission and ownership of X related files in the user's home dir.
It sounds like you may have done an 'su' then startx as root, but with the
user's environment. You should use 'su -' instead if doing something as
root so you have root's env.

Subject: Does anybody have Tripwire working on RH 7.1?
Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 04:38:25 GMT
I have been trying to use Tripwire 2.3.0.50 on RH 7.1
I have set everything up to a point where I can run the tripwire check and
view the reports locally, but the report is never sent out to the email
address specified for each rule in the policy file, even though the email
test works fine, and there are violations in the report that should trigger
the emails.
Second problem is the fact that I have specified GLOBALEMAIL parameter in
the configuration file, and reports are sent out, (like the one below) but
they are reporting no violations even though the email subject indicates 2
violations in the shorthand format, and there are indeed violations in the
original report files.
Does anybody have Tripwire with email reporting working in RH 7.1, who has
encountered similar problems?
Any suggestions?

Subject: Open Source Desktop Application Setup
Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 05:11:08 GMT
There is a lot of Open-Source products out there. Some are easy to
use, Some more difficult. Open Country http://www.opencountry.org
is trying to build a new delivery mechanism by simplfying installation
and launch of these applications. As one of our engineers said
recently: What I am trying to do now within the [open-source]
movement is:
1. Expand the range and depth of development. Opening the doors of
Open Source to even more participants.
2. Create incentive to inovate.
3. Promote Open Source OS's as desktop/office/handheld OS of choice.
4. Take the best that the Cathedral has to offer and install it into
the bazaar.
5. Give business the "warm fuzzy" that it needs to promote the use of
Open Source software in thier day to day work (ie the desktop in the
cubicle)
6. Move the ability to use Open Source software from the geek to the
meek, in other words make it simple enough for my mother to use.
7. Create an organization that is as resposive to the community of
users as possible.
Did we succeed?

Subject: Problem mounting vfat partition
Date: 14 May 2001 23:31:18 -0600
I have an IDE and a SCSI disk. I installed win98 on the IDE drive and
it booted and ran fine. Then I installed RedHat 7.0 on the SCSI drive
and, after lots of trial and error, was able to get Linux to boot, but
can no longer boot to win98. When booting win98, I get through LI of
LILO before it hangs. I can boot from a win98 floppy and see the
win98 contents of the IDE drive, though.
I'd like to try reinstalling win98 on the IDE drive (and then run lilo
again), but first I want to copy some data from the win98 drive to my
LInux SCSI drive. But, I cannot mount it. When I do
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/win
I get the message about bad type, bad options, bad superblock, or too
many fs mounted.
Can anyone suggest what I could try next or what I could do to figure
out what my problem is? Thanks.

I got linux to recongize my datachute-pci card adatper. When I insert my adaptec

initializing socket 0
unsupported card in socket 0
cs: no valid ROM images found!
That is weird because when I check the /etc/pcmcia/config file I see the device
listed
card "Adaptec APA-1480 SCSI Host Adapter"
manfid 0x012f, 0xcb01
bind "apa1480_cb"
There is a
apa1480_cb later on in the file
device "apa1480_cb"
class "scsi" module "cb_enabler", "apa1480_cb"
Is there a special .dat file that I need in
/etc/pcmcia/cis ?
At least linux did not reboot in a infinit boot loop like windows 2000
professional did. Folks said 2000 was stable, they are wrong. The first day I
installed it, I got a machine check, system info (without a network device)
locked up the machine.

Hi,
take a lokk at /etc/dhcp/dhcp-eth0.info or something like that. That's where
dhcpcd stores the data it collected.
This will tell you if dhcpcd got all required data (it does for me). Just to
see if you get everything, or if the problem is already on the communication
side.

You can try, but I'm not sure you'll succeed. The BIOS must support booting
from a certain disc, for it to work at all.
To try this :
It depends on what OS is where.
But basically, you should use the map-drive=
command in lilo.conf
You must also take care where to put LILO.
Descriptions are in `man lilo` `man lilo.conf` and very extensive
information is in the User_Guide.ps (use `locate User_Guide.ps` to find it)
If you're unsure if you got everything right, set up a preliminary
lilo.conf,
(No, I'm not going to do all the work for you :-) )
and post it together with the output of `/sbin/fdisk -l /dev/hd[a-d]` and
the ouput of `mount`. I'll check/correct what you made then, so at least you
won't destroy anything by running /sbin/lilo with an incorrect lilo.conf
But as I said, I can't give you a 100% guarantee that it'll work at all.
I suspect though, that if the second HDD is connected as hdb,
it will be bootable (If it is connected as hdc, the situation is different).
