Erm, make sure you don't make your system so distributed so that

Hi LINUX Gurus:
I have Caldera 2.4 Linux. I have a local network of several UNIX
machines. I can FTP from one machine to another without problem.
However, when I try to FTP outside the local network, over PPP,
the FTP is very slow and stops after transfering only about 3 KB.
If I setup PPP on a different UNIX (SGI), FTP to the outside works
fine.
What is unique about the LINUX UNIX, or what have I not setup correctly?
Thanks for your help.

Well I have just bought PartitionMagic V6 and it has worked very well
partitioning my 20GB drive with Win98ME on the first 11GB and SuSe on
the rest.
I was able to resize and move the partitions on the drive without
loosing any data ... BUT it would be advisable to save/backup any
important data before jumping in the deep end with this product (I
wasn't too bothered as all my important stuff is on the 'D' drive and
CD copies)

I read something on /. recently about a tool called Two Kernel Monte that
should do what you want. Go to http://www.scyld.com and look around on

My system:
K7V-T w/ 700 Tbird not overclocked & 128MB Crucial
Matrox G400 DH AGP
Tekram DC390F
Netgear FA310
No IDE disks or cdroms
I've installed Slackware 7.0 kernel 2.2.13 w/ Alsa sound drivers
0.5.9a & kernel 2.2.17 (with included OSS/FREE).
Using kernel 2.2.13 & Alsa I had sound mostly working for about a week
using these modules
snd-card-via686a 6908 0
snd-pcm 28952 0 [snd-card-via686a]
snd-timer 7648 0 [snd-pcm]

snd-timer
snd-ac97-codec snd-mixer snd-mpu401-uart snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device]
soundcore 2372 2 [snd]
"mostly" meaning aplay & play worked with .au's & .wav' & playmidi
looked like it was working but no sound came out. During this week I
performed several shutdowns; then on one startup the system locked up
tight while loading the snd-card-via686a module & it's done that ever
since, rebooting & power cycling hasn't helped. No messages, no
syslog, no ooops, no nada.
I installed kernel 2.2.17 with its OSS/FREE (downloaded from
kernel.org). Still no sound;
bash-2.03# insmod -v soundcore
bash-2.03# insmod -v sound
bash-2.03# insmod -v uart401
bash-2.03# insmod -v sb irq=6 io=0x320 dma=1

sb: dsp reset failed.
Both kernels are compiled with pci quirks enabled.
I've done a lot of rtfm'ing & tried a lot of stuff without success.
I'd appreciate any clues, hints, or email discussion anyone's willing
to offer.

I am trying to recompile the kernel for the first time. I need to enable

Anyway, according to the HOWTO, I should be able to go to a directory

For some reason, this does not work. I get an error saying that there is no

The card services do function. They will
'beep away' with the modem or SCSI cards.
There have been no problems here.
The card and adapter have been slid into a
Win98 machine and mounts up on its machines
file system just fine. It was originally
formatted by a digital camera and as
side comment, a WinCE machine has no
problems with it either.

No, the shell wouold interpret a single "{" or a single "}" in a special
way, the concatenation of "{" and "}" wthout any whitespace between is
not interpreted in a special way.
> As I remember it, only the semicolon needs to be escaped when command
> is run from inside a bash shell script.
You also don't need to quot the braces in the commandline.
If you don't trust me, try it fuer yourself...
For the Problem with the missing filename before the matching lines:
If grep searches more than one file, it will print the filename in
front of the matching lines, so you can use something like
find . -name '*.txt' -exec grep "Hello World" {} /dev/null \;
to achiev tha (note, that i don't use "-print" anymore!).
The other (faster!) solution:
find . -name '*.txt' -print | xargs grep
seems to avoid this problem, but that is not really true: xargs runs
the command "grep" on several filenamearguments (which were read from
stdin) at once, but what if xargs runs grep with a _single_ filename
the last time? To avoid this problem, you may fill in the additional
filename /dev/null (as used in the above solution) as parameter to grep:
find . -name '*.txt' -print | xargs grep /dev/null
This should work, if there are no filenames with whitespace or newline-
characters in the filename.
If you want it work also with these "unusual" filenames, i would suggest
to use the gnuish versions of "find" and "xargs":
find . -name '*.txt' -print0 | xargs -0 grep /dev/null
I think, there is no more complete and faster solution than this...
;-)

Did you shut down your connection in orderly fashion,
or just dump it? If a modem lockfile did get left over, you
can delete it manually and try again.

I am new to Linux and I am trying to install Mandrake 7.2 into a
dual boot with Win98. My problem is this, Mandrake installation
runs fine until it hits the point of repartitioning the hard drive.
In gui mode it just hangs there, in text mode it returns a
"Installation Error - Halting" error. My scenario is that I had a
3g harddive partitioned to (2) 1.5G drives. I have Win98 on one and
wanted Linux on the other.
As a test I did let linux install and remove windows and that went
great. So, I reformatted and reinstalled windows 98 and now want to
get back to my dual boot. My plan is to go to expert mode. I do see
and follow how to select the drive and set the partitions. However,
there are different partition options like "linux", "swap",etc.
Anyone have any instructions or proper sizing and steps to get
through this?
thanks!

I'm trying to connect the two computers I have at home with a crossover
cable. I have cable modem (att@home). One computer has two NICs (an SMP
EtherPower and a linksys card) and the other has a 3com card. If I plug
the cable modem in any of these 3 cards separately, I can connect to the
outer world without a hitch (after configuring the interface and the
routing table, of course). The only thing that I can't do is have the
computers talk to each other. I noticed that when I plug the cable modem
into any of the card, the leds light up, but when I plug the crossover
cable, neither end lights up, so I suspect it is a hardware problem. Is
this normal? Do I change the cable? Do I get a hub?

Rooty,
You need to install the kernel sources. If you have a CD rom you should
find them there. Normally they are not, by default, installed during
installation.

You are probably in the wrong directory, or your make file does not have
the make config in it. It should unless you've changed it.
You should be running make from /usr/src/linux, if I remember correctly.
Make sure that the directory that you are running make has the make file
that you want.
